Matsushima is in east-central Miyagi Prefecture, with Matsushima Bay to the east. The town’s highest point is Mount Danyama, with a height of 178 meters.
Matsushima(松島) is a group of islands in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. There are some 260 tiny islands (shima) covered in pines (matsu) – hence the name – and is ranked as one of the Three Views of Japan.
A well-known apocryphal haiku often attributed to Matsuo Bashō indicates that the poet is at a loss for words:
There are four well-known spots to view the Matsushima, known as the Magnificent View(壮観,sōkan), Beautiful View(麗観,reikan), Enchanting View(幽観,yūkan), and Grand View(偉観,ikan).

Matsushima - Miyagi prefecture
If you'd like to explore the north of Japan with your Japan Rail Pass, we recommend you to discover Matsushima!
Located only about 2h30 from Tokyo, in Miyagi Prefecture, beautiful landscapes await. Indeed, it is said that Matsushima Bay is one of the three most popular destinations in Japan. The famous poet Matsuo Basho even praised it in his haiku.
🏝 Three islands in Matsushima Bay are connected to the mainland by footbridges and are easy to explore. You can also enjoy the scenery from the ocean by taking a boat (there are several boats departing from Matsushima Port).
After enjoying the nature, we recommend you to spend the night in a ryokan (Japanese inn) and to relax in a rotenburo (outdoor bath) while admiring the beauty of the ocean 🌊
