Egida Giordani Sartori (1910-1999), often considered the dean of Italian harpsichordists, dedicated her life to the revival and popularization of this instrument. She began piano studies at the age of three with her mother. By the time she was four she gave a recital for a member of the Savoia royal family. At five she was the youngest student ever admitted to the Benedetto Marcello Music School in Venice, where she performed in a famous violin/piano duo with Nino Sanzogno, another young prodigy. Personal difficulties and World War II interrupted her musical activities. Eventually, she discovered the harpsichord and attended Ferruccio Vignanelli's course at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. Her first harpsichord recital was in Prague. Sartori played an important role in the discovery of the harpsichord and its repertoire. Her musicological research shed new light on 18th century Venetian music, particularly that of Galuppi. She taught harpsichord at conservatories in Venice, Milan and Rome, and for twenty years she gave masterclasses and concerts on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore near Venice. These programs were organized through l’Associazione Clavicembalistica Italiana, which she founded and directed, and were made possible by the generous support of the Fondazione G. Cini.

Bach - Mass in B minor BWV 232 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society
Sublime, extreme and all-embracing… only superlatives will do to describe Bach’s Mass in B minor, the 'Hohe Messe', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. In between an awe-inspiring Kyrie and the jubilant final Dona nobis pacem, there are nine completely unique arias and duets, fourteen impressive ensemble sections for four, five, six and even eight voices, a broad spectrum of instrumental solos, and an incredible variety of styles.

Bach: Mass in B minor | Thomanerchor and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig
One of the greatest musical works of all time: The Thomanerchor Leipzig and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig perform J.S. Bach’s Mass in B minor (BWV 232) in the Church of St. Thomas on July 28, 2000. The stunning backdrop to the performance is particularly fitting since Bach was music director of the church (Kapellmeister) from 1723 until his death in 1750.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B minor is regarded by many as one of the supreme achievements of Western classical music. Even before its first complete performance, the Swiss music historian and publisher Hans Georg Nägeli described it as the “greatest musical masterpiece of all times and nations”. Many scholars believe that, along with the Art of Fugue and the Musical Offering, the work presents a summation of Bach’s musicianship as w...

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) did not originally intend the posthumously named Great Catholic Mass (also known as: Mass in B minor or High Mass in B minor) as a complete mass. Bach, a Lutheran himself, composed four “short” masses (in F major, A major, G minor, and G major; BWV 233-236), which consisted of only Kyrie and Gloria - the standard in Lutheran liturgy at the time. For his Mass in B minor he reworked an additional shorter mass, ‘Missa of 1733 ’(BWV 232 I), which he had originally composed after the death of August the Strong, but which is believed to have never been performed.
It is likely that Bach reworked various previously composed pieces for the Mass in B minor, combining them into a complete mass as late as 1749. The pragmatic multiple use of one's own compositions is called the "parody process" and was common in Bach's time – in those days church music was simply music for everyday use. The Mass in B minor gained appreciation soon after Bach's death in 1750, and in the 19th century it was even considered the greatest musical work of art of all time. It still has a fixed place in concert programs today. The handwritten original manuscript of the mass, which is currently held by the Berlin State Library, was inscribed into the UNESCO ‘Memory of the World Register ’in 2015.
The performers of the piece are the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Thomanerchor and an ensemble of soloists, including Ruth Holton (soprano), Matthias Rexroth (countertenor/male alto), Christoph Genz (tenor) and Klaus Mertens (bass). The piece is conducted by Christoph Biller, the church’s current Kapellmeister and Bach’s 16th successor.

Many scholars believe that, along with the Art of Fugue and the Musical Offering, the work presents a summation of Bach’s musicianship as well as the most glorious presentation of the composer’s deeply held religious beliefs. Much of the Mass gave new form to vocal music that Bach had composed throughout his career, some of which was not from sacred sources (a point of contention for Leipzig churchgoers). The Kyrie and Gloria (known as the “Missa”) had been written as an application for the post of court composer at Dresden. The remaining movements, the Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei, turn the “Missa” into a “Missa tota”: the full setting of the Ordinary of the Mass.
In the Kyrie, Bach explores three different forms of musical expression in an impassioned entreaty for God’s mercy. He brings in trumpets and drums to sing the praises of the Lord in the Gloria, Credo and Sanctus, and, as so often before, saves one of his most exquisite and poignant musical phrases to express the idea of peace in the ‘et in terra pax’. The dramatic contrast forged between the ‘Crucifixus’ and ‘Et resurrexit’ movements of the Credo serve as a dramatic representation of the Christian statement of belief, and the lamenting Agnus Dei aria gives way to a exultant chorus of ‘Dona nobis pacem’ (Grant us thy peace), bringing the vast score to its conclusion. René Jacobs directs the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin in this reading, which was described as “Spacious and intimate … a compelling performance” by the BBC Music Magazine following its first release.
The Reissue of one of the finest recordings of Bach’s “Hohe Messe’!
This “compelling performance..spacious and intimate” (Gramophone) boasts of a line‐up of famous soloists: Christoph Prégardien, Matthias Goerne, Bernarda Fink and Hillevi Martinpelto, singers of world renown who have amply won their spurs in Early Music. René Jacobs and his Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Rias Kammerchor count among the best (if not THE best..) of Baroque ensembles and choirs around the world.
