donanobispacem (Latin for "Grant us peace") is a phrase in the Agnus Dei section of the Roman Catholicmass. The phrase, in isolation, has been appropriated for a number of works, which include:
Dona nobis pacem, (English: Grant us peace), is a cantata written by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1936 and first performed on 2 October 1936. The work was commissioned to mark the centenary of the Huddersfield Choral Society. Vaughan Williams produced his plea for peace by referring to recent wars during the growing fears of a new one. His texts were taken from the Mass, three poems by Walt Whitman, a political speech, and sections of the Bible. A.V. Butcher has analysed Vaughan Williams' use of the Whitman poems in this composition.
The work is scored for chorus and large orchestra, with soprano and baritone soloists. The phrase Dona nobis pacem ("Give us peace"), in different settings, punctuates the entire piece.
Sections
The work is in six continuous parts:
Agnus Dei, whose Latin text comes from the last movement in the Roman Catholic Mass. The soprano introduces the theme, singing it over the orchestra and choir. The text translates as "Lamb of God, grant us peace."
"Dona Nobis Pacem" (Ecclesiastical Latin:[ˈdona ˈnɔbis ˈpatʃɛm]) is a song with Latin text, often sung as a canon. The words, which mean "Bring us peace", come from the Latin Mass. The origin of the melody is unknown (most hymnals list it as "traditional").
The Mass in B minor (BWV 232) by Johann Sebastian Bach is a musical setting of the complete Ordinary of the Latin Mass. The work was one of Bach's last compositions, not completed until 1749, the year before his death. Much of the Mass gave new form to vocal music that Bach had composed throughout his career, dating back (in the case of the "Crucifixus") to 1714, but extensively revised. To complete the work, in the late 1740s Bach composed new sections of the Credo such as "Et incarnatus est".
It was unusual for composers working in the Lutheran tradition to compose a Missa tota and Bach's motivations remain a matter of scholarly debate. The Mass was never performed in its entirety during Bach's lifetime; the first documented complete performance took place in 1859. Since the nineteenth century it has been widely hailed as one of the greatest compositions in musical history, and today it is frequently performed and recorded.Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach archived this work as the Great Catholic Mass.

PLEASE NOTE: I have intentionally altered the harmonic progression of the last two measures of the round. (Call it creative license.) Because of this harmonic change, you should note that the ascending "pa-a-a-a-cem" in the second to last measure of PART 3 of the round, is DIFFERENT from most common versions of this round. I know there are lots of children, school choirs, church choirs, etc. that use my video to learn to sing this piece, and I apologize for any confusion if your music score looks different from what you hear on my recording. It was never my intention (when I first posted this in 2013) that so many people would be referencing this video for learning purposes. I'm thrilled and happy to be part of your learning process, but I thought I should at least point out this musical change. 🎶
