The origin of the name is uncertain, although it was used as early as 1846. Lewis A. and Lewis L. McArthur, in the seventh edition of Oregon Geographic Names find no support for the suggestion that employees of the Hudson's Bay Company had earlier named the stream St. Marys River. Rather, they summarize two stories about the origin. One is that Adam E. Wimple, an early settler, named the stream for his sister. Wimple was hanged at Dallas, Oregon, in 1852 for murdering his wife, also named Mary. The other story is that Wayman St. Clair, who represented Benton County in the territorial legislature in the early 1850s, named the river for Mary Lloyd. She was said to have been the first white woman to cross the river.
In 1847, Joseph C. Avery began laying out a town at the confluence of Marys River with the Willamette River, and the place was called Marysville. In 1853, the legislature changed the name of the town to Corvallis, a compounding of Latin words meaning heart of the valley. Prior to settlement by European Americans, fur traders referred to the Mary's River as Mouse River or Mice River. It is probable that nearby Marys Peak was named for the river.
Marys River is a tributary of the Mississippi River in Illinois. It drains a small watershed between the Big Muddy River and the Kaskaskia River. It joins the Mississippi just southeast of Chester, near Kaskaskia. Because of its proximity to Kaskaskia — the capital of Illinois Territory and the first capital of the State of Illinois — Marys River was the site of early settlements leading into the interior of Illinois.
Marys River is approximately 41 miles (66km) in length.
Cities and counties
The following cities and towns are in the Marys River basin:
Oregon (i/ˈɔːrᵻɡən/AWR-ə-gən) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Oregon is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Washington, on the south by California, on the east by Idaho, and on the southeast by Nevada. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon's northern boundary, and the Snake River delineates much of the eastern boundary. The parallel 42° north delineates the southern boundary with California and Nevada. It is one of only three states of the contiguous United States to have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean, and the proximity to the ocean heavily influences the state's mild winter climate, despite the latitude.
Oregon was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before Western traders, explorers, and settlers arrived. An autonomous government was formed in the Oregon Country in 1843, the Oregon Territory was created in 1848, and Oregon became the 33rd state on February14, 1859. Today, at 98,000 square miles, Oregon is the ninth largest and, with a population of 4 million, 26th most populous U.S. state. The capital of Oregon is Salem, the second most populous of its cities, with 160,614 residents (2013 estimate). With 609,456 residents (2013 estimate), Portland is the largest city in Oregon and ranks 29th in the U.S. Its metro population of 2,314,554 (2013 estimate) is 24th. The Willamette Valley in western Oregon is the state's most densely populated area, home to eight of the ten most populous cities.
The land Oregon, Illinois was founded on was previously held by the Potawatomi and Winnebago Indian tribes. In fact, later, settlers discovered that the area contained a large number of Indian mounds, most 10 to 12 feet in diameter.
Ogle County was a New England settlement. The original founders of Oregon and Rochelle consisted entirely of settlers from New England. These people were "Yankees", that is to say they were descended from the EnglishPuritans who settled New England in the 1600s. They were part of a wave of New England farmers who headed west into what was then the wilds of the Northwest Territory during the early 1800s. Most of them arrived as a result of the completion of the Erie Canal. When they arrived in what is now Bureau County there was nothing but a virgin forest and wild prairie, the New Englanders laid out farms, constructed roads, erected government buildings and established post routes. They brought with them many of their YankeeNew England values, such as a passion for education, establishing many schools as well as staunch support for abolitionism. They were mostly members of the Congregationalist Church though some were Episcopalian. Culturally Bureau County, like much of northern Illinois would be culturally very continuous with early New England culture, for most of its history.
Towner and Moore had been friends and occasional collaborators since meeting in 1960 as students at the University of Oregon. By 1969, both were working musicians living in New York; while collaborating with folksinger Tim Hardin they were introduced to world music pioneer Paul Winter's "Consort" ensemble, particularly member Collin Walcott, with whom Towner began improvising as an informal duo. By 1970 Towner and Moore had joined the Winter Consort and met fellow member McCandless; the four began exploring improvisation on their own, while their contributions continued to be seminal in redefining the Winter Consort "sound" in compositions like Towner's "Icarus".
The four musicians made their first group recording in 1970, but the label, Increase Records, went out of business before it could be released (it eventually was issued by Vanguard in 1980 as Our First Record). Oregon made its "formal" debut in NYC in 1971 (originally named "Thyme — Music of Another Present Era", the name change to Oregon was suggested by McCandless).

Truly a place worth protecting!
This is a video of clips complied from the St. Mary's River during the summer of 2020. Nick Hawkins filmed the trout and Warren Roberts filmed the jumping salmon. The rest by me, Scott Beaver. The biodiversity in the St. Mary's River is really a treasure and quite remarkable. There are many creatures listed in the species at risk public registry (SARA) which are actually doing very well in the St. Mary's River Valley?

The Beauty of Mary's River Covered Bridge in Chester, Illinois
Mary's River Covered Bridge is a covered bridge which crosses Marys River 4 miles northeast of Chester, Illinois. The Burr truss bridge is 86 feet long and 17 feet 8 inches wide. The bridge was built in 1854 as part of a plank toll road connecting Chester to Bremen; the bridge allowed agricultural products to be transported to Chester, a significant port on the Mississippi River. ➡️ We talk to some locals, get a tour and look at some fascinating places, including an abandoned "Adventure Camp" that closed in 1993. We explore the ruins and talk to the former owner that still stays at the camp.
All these factors make up what makes this one special island out in open water with many unique features about it that are unlike anywhere else I've ever been before!

Working with representatives of the Nova Scotia Salmon Association, St. Mary’s River Association, and Atlantic Salmon Federation, photographic team Nick Hawkins and Tom Cheney captured underwater video shows a pair of wild Atlantic salmon preparing to spawn in McKeen Brook, an important tributary of the St. Mary’s River that would be directly affected by the proposed Cochrane Hill gold mine.

Federal Satsuki Bulk Carrier downbound on St. Mary's River 2014 - This is the Federal Satsuki traveling downbound on the St. Mary's River on May 5th, 2014. This was taken at Rotary Park.
Check out listings here: https://species-registry.canada.ca/index-en.html#/species?ranges=9&sortBy=commonNameSort&sortDirection=asc&pageSize=10&keywords=brook%20floater
Filmed in late 2017 by Pieter Jordaan and South Wings and narrated by Riverkeeper Rick Frey, an aerial view of St. Marys River from its mouth on Atlantic coast between Cumberland and Amelia Islands and meandering to its source on the Okefenokee Swamp.
DeTour Village is a pilot station for ships navigating the St. Marys River. The pilots guide mostly foreign ships through the inland seaway that connects Lake Huron and Lake Superior . They have to catch the "Saltys" on the run via a "Pilot Boat". I was able to track one of these runs with my Phantom 3.

Just four miles northeast of Chester is this historical covered bridge which at one time charged tolls and helped transport livestock. This was restored, most recently, in 2005. Anyone is welcome to walk inside. It is part of a roadside park.
We had the pleasure of spending a fews days on this wonderful island on the eastern end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula called “Neebish Island”.
➡️ With only 64 year-round residents, they call this little piece of land home due to its remote location on St Mary's River less than 30 miles from downtown Detroit.
The only store on the island offers some shopping opportunities as well as camping supplies while the only full-service campground provides visitors with clean facilities and great amenities.
The Island definitely has some interesting aspects.
➡️ One such aspect, caused by freighters traveling very close to the shore and having their wave wash attack land constantly on this small parcel of land; Neebish isn't always an easy place for those who live here year round--especially when they only store just so happens to be right next door!.
Like many towns and island in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, it has its own micro culture and a unique history.
Where have you visited recently? Was it similar to Neebish?
