Columbia, South Carolina

Columbia is the capital of and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, with a population of 129,272 as of the 2010 United States Census. As of July 1, 2013, the city's population was estimated to be 133,358 (U.S. Census Bureau, July 2014 release). The city serves as the county seat of Richland County, and a portion of the city extends into neighboring Lexington County. It is the center of the Columbia metropolitan statistical area, which had a population of 767,598 as of the 2010 United States Census, growing to 800,495 by July 1, 2013, according to 2014 U.S. Census estimates. The name Columbia was a poetic term used for the United States, originating from the name of Christopher Columbus.

The city is located approximately 13 miles (21 km) northwest of the geographic center of South Carolina, and is the primary city of the Midlands region of the state. It lies at the confluence of the Saluda River and the Broad River, which merge at Columbia to form the Congaree River. Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina, the state's flagship and largest university, and is also the site of Fort Jackson, the largest United States Army installation for Basic Combat Training. In 1860, the city was the location of the South Carolina Secession Convention, which marked the departure of the first state from the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War.

It was founded in 1786, but ⅔ of the city burned down after General William T. Sherman entered in 1865. A few historic buildings managed to survive, such as the Hampton-Preston Mansion, Robert Mills House and Gardens, and South Carolina State House. They’re all worth visiting as a way to experience life during the Antebellum period. Several museums celebrate South Carolina’s history and cultures such as the Columbia Museum of Art and the South Carolina State Museum. Many are interactive and entertaining enough for children, such as the famous EdVenture. South Carolina’s Lake Murray Dam is a well-known attraction, but Columbia also has plenty of other beautiful natural spaces. They include Saluda Shoals, Congaree National Park, the Sesquecential State Park, and the Harbison State Forest, to name a few. Sports-lovers will have a wonderful time in the city. The Williams-Bryce Stadium hosts a rowdy crowd, and the multi-purpose Segra Park is worth visiting as well. You’re certain to find a game or event that you’ll enjoy in one of them. It is the center of the Columbia metropolitan statistical area, which had a population of 767,598 as of the 2010 United States Census, growing to 832,666 by July 1, 2018, according to 2018 U.S. Census estimates. This makes it the 70th-largest metropolitan statistical area in the nation, as estimated by the United States Census Bureau as of July 1, 2018. The name Columbia is a poetic term used for the United States, derived from the name of Christopher Columbus, who explored for the Spanish Crown. Columbia is often abbreviated as Cola, leading to its nickname as "Soda City."[1] The city is located about 13 miles (21 km) northwest of the geographic center of South Carolina, and is the primary city of the Midlands region of the state. It lies at the confluence of the Saluda River and the Broad River, which merge at Columbia to form the Congaree River. As the state capital, Columbia is the site of the South Carolina State House, the center of government for the state. In 1860, the South Carolina Secession Convention took place here; delegates voted for secession, making this the first state to leave the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War. The first six states to secede were those whose planters held the most enslaved African Americans; these were slave societies. Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina, the state's flagship university and the largest in the state. The area has benefited from Congressional support for Southern military installations. Columbia is the site of Fort Jackson, the largest United States Army installation for Basic Combat Training. Columbia has a super pretty downtown! For this edition of dashboard tours, I took I-20 east from Atlanta and headed to Columbia, the capital of the great state of South Carolina. It was a beautiful morning - it had rained the night before, but on this day, the sky was shining bright, pal. It was 9:45 on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Columbia has a population of 135,000 people, making it just about tied with Charleston as South Carolina’s largest city. It’s growing, but not very quickly. It’s an old city - founded in 1854. The infrastructure here was old for a long time, but revitalization began in the 90s, as old warehouses and dilapidated buildings were replaced with artsy places and restaurants and shopping and condos and other mixed use buildings. Jobs wise, it’s steady, not booming. There are a decent number of health care, manufacturing and banking jobs in the area. Columbia, South Carolina

Columbia is the capital of and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, with a population of 129,272 as of the 2010 United States Census. As of July 1, 2013, the city's population was estimated to be 133,358 (U.S. Census Bureau, July 2014 release). The city serves as the county seat of Richland County, and a portion of the city extends into neighboring Lexington County. It is the center of the Columbia metropolitan statistical area, which had a population of 767,598 as of the 2010 United States Census, growing to 800,495 by July 1, 2013, according to 2014 U.S. Census estimates. The name Columbia was a poetic term used for the United States, originating from the name of Christopher Columbus.

The city is located approximately 13 miles (21 km) northwest of the geographic center of South Carolina, and is the primary city of the Midlands region of the state. It lies at the confluence of the Saluda River and the Broad River, which merge at Columbia to form the Congaree River. Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina, the state's flagship and largest university, and is also the site of Fort Jackson, the largest United States Army installation for Basic Combat Training. In 1860, the city was the location of the South Carolina Secession Convention, which marked the departure of the first state from the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War.
