Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (Russian:Магнитогорский металлургический комбинат, Magnitogorskiy Metallurgicheskiy Kombinat), abbreviated as MMK, is the third largest steel company in Russia. It is located in the city of Magnitogorsk, in Chelyabinsk Oblast.
History of Magnitogorsk mining
Located in the mineral rich Ural region that demarcates the separation between Europe and Asia, significant mining in Magnitogorsk dates back to 1752. The effort to explore the Magnitnaya Mountain region for potential iron ores was undertaken by two investors named Myasnikov and Tverdysh who petitioned for the first rights to begin extraction of the metals. Following the granting of their petition by the Orenburg government, mining operations were soon initiated in 1759.
Historically, the center of Russian iron production had been focused in the Tula region. However in the beginning decades of the 18th century, a shift towards developing the industrial capabilities of the Ural took place that more than doubled Russia’s iron production. In 1828, a series of geological surveys began in an effort to determine the mineral make up of the Magnitnaya Mountain and create estimates for the possible amount of iron contained within the mountain. By the later part of the 19th century, the small town had begun to grow with more than 10,000 residents reported. During this time, between 30,000 to 50,000 tons of raw iron was being extracted there annually.
A steel mill or steelworks is an industrial plant for the manufacture of steel.
Steel mill can refer to the steel works making rolled products from iron ore, but it also designs, more
precisely the plant where steel semi-finished casting products (blooms, ingots, slabs, billets) are made, from molten pig iron or from scraps.
Magnitnaya was founded in 1743 as part of the Orenburg Line of forts established under the Empress Elizabeth. By 1747 the Russian settlement was large enough to justify the building of the small wooden "Church of the Holy Trinity".
In 1752 two entrepreneurs called Tverdysh and Myasnikov started investigating the possibility of mining the ore for which the area would later become famous, and having established that there were no pre-existing rights to the Magnitnaya Mountain ore, the two petitioned for the right to extract it themselves. Their petition was granted and iron ore extraction began in 1759.

An good look at steelmaking as done during WWII, long before OSHA and EPA. The furnace is charged from the top with iron ore, coke and limestone; hot air, frequently enriched with oxygen, is blown in from the bottom; and the carbon produced from the coke transforms the iron ore into pig iron containing carbon, with the generation of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The limestone acts as a flux. At a temperature of 1,600°C, the pig iron melts and collects at the bottom of the furnace. The furnace is tapped (i.e. the pig iron is removed) periodically, and the pig iron is cast into pigs for later use (e.g. in foundries), or is poured into ladles where it is transferred, still molten, to the steel-making plant. The purpose of steel-making operations is to refine the pig iron which contains large amounts of carbon and other impurities. The carbon content must be reduced, the impurities oxidized and removed, and the iron converted into a highly elastic metal that can be forged and fabricated. Alloying agents may be added at this stage. Different types of melting furnace are used in this process. Steel is cast into slabs, billets, bars, ingots and other shapes. Subsequent steps may include scarfing, pickling, annealing, hot and cold rolling, extrusion, galvanizing, surface coating, cutting and slitting, and other operations designed to produce a variety of steel products. Operations in the iron and steel industry may expose workers to a wide range of hazards or workplace activities or conditions that could cause incidents, injury, death, ill health or diseases. For a comprehensive looks at the hazards and their control, go to the 2005 Code of Practice for safety and health in the iron and steel industry at http://www.ilo.org/public/english/protection/safework/cops/english/index.htm .This was clipped from the 1944 US Government film, Steeltown.

Generally when metal impurities mix with water, for instance, a big explosion may occur.
#9 Electric Arc Furnaces
The electric arc furnaces have been substituting traditional furnaces in many steel plants worldwide.
#8 Boiler Explosion
Boilers are very important in the metal industry. They are defined as a closed pressure vessel where a fluid is heated by applying the resulting heat externally.
#7 Fires
One of the hazards to be considered in the metal industry is fire. Fire increases the possibilities for accidents to occur.
#6 Moisture
Water entry or just simple moisture in the boiler can produce bad results that could put at risk the worker’s live in the metal industry.
#5 Slag Dumping
We cannot consider the slag dumping as an accident, but the consequences of this action can be very negative. Slag or waste originate from ore smelting to purify metals.
#4 Steel Casting ladle break
Broadly speaking, the steel casting ladle is a tool used in the metal refining and casting. it is used to transport and pour the red hot metal. They are made of steel and have a refractory lining to withstand high temperatures.
#3 Molten Metal Splashes
One of the most common risks in metal smelting are the splashes of molten metal. It is in fact one of the points for risk prevention.
#2 Eruptions in Metal Casting Centres
A very risky event is the metal casting process. This process consists of pouring the smelted metal into a cast for it to become solid.
#1 Fire Loops or Cobble
this kind of accident can be lethal for workers who are near. The temperature of this kind of molten metal loops is extremely high.

Trust me or deliver me You know I'm on the run Face to face we sit here now This isn't all the fun. Take your eyes away from me You know I'm apathetic Put me wise on desperation Take the blame from me. Sometimes I don't believe in my victory Over tyranny, oh no. And now I'm leaving. Gimme commandos You are immortal I am the one who's on hire. Too many reasons, Thousand reasons for demanding termination soon. Burning desire, burning like fire Towing me out of disaster. But this is the realm of tormentors. Sometimes I don't believe in my victory Over tyranny, oh no. And now I'm leaving. Run away Release the body. Sometimes I don't believe in my victory Over tyranny On the run
