Shin Splints (MTSS) Treatment
What is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints)?
Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) commonly referred to as “shin splints”, is a condition that causes pain on the inside of the shin (the front part of the leg between the knee and ankle). It is an
inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue around yourtibia.
Pain typically occurs along the front of the inner leg between the knee and ankle. MTSS is one of the more common injuries in athletes affecting both the muscle on the inside of the shin and the bone to which it attaches. It causes the connection between them to become irritated or even develop minor tears due to overwork.
Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) occurs when too much stress is placed on the tibia either from overuse or repetitive use. The muscles that ...

In the video above, Stuart Hinds provides an overview of the key muscles typically involved in cases of Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) and their treatment with soft tissue and trigger point therapy
MTSS is an extremely common condition related to over exertion and is therefore often found in athletes and combat soldiers. Also commonly referred to as Shin Splints, the main symptom is usually exercise-induced pain over the area of the anterior tibia, and can be a precursor for more serious tibial stress fractures.

The muscles that attach to the tibia include the posterior tibialis muscle, the soleus muscle, and the flexor digitorum longus muscle. They can cause an excess of stress on the bone, and strain themselves at their insertion onto the bone as well.
Another muscle commonly involved is the tibialis anterior muscle. MTSS tends to occur after sudden changes in physical activity. These can include changes in frequency, such as increasing the number of days you exercise each week. Changes in intensity and duration, such as running on steep inclines or longer distances, can also cause MTSS. Sometimes the pain of MTSS can be so intense that you must stop the activity. MTSS is also a cumulative stress disorder. Repeated pounding and stress on the bones, muscles, and joints of the lower legs prevents your body from being able to naturally repair and restore itself.
