US 5 begins at Exit 5 of I-91 northeast of downtown New Haven, heading north through the suburbs of New Haven. It crosses the Quinnipiac River in North Haven, shifting eastward to a different road. US 5 continues north through the town of Wallingford before entering the city of Meriden. North of Meriden, it becomes a four-lane divided highway known as the Berlin Turnpike, where a long overlap with Route 15 also begins. US 5 continues through the southern suburbs of Hartford along the Berlin Turnpike, shifting just south of the city line to the Wilbur Cross Highway, a limited access highway. The Wilbur Cross Highway bypasses downtown Hartford and crosses the Connecticut River on the Charter Oak Bridge into East Hartford. From here, US 5 exits the Wilbur Cross Highway and runs along a four-lane, divided surface road to South Windsor before returning to a two-lane road the rest of the way to the Massachusetts state line in Enfield.
South Carolina Highway 2 (SC 2) is a state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina that runs 3.9 miles (6.3km) between two portions of U.S. Highway21/U.S. Highway176/U.S. Highway321 (US21/US176/US321) in Lexington County. The southern 2.4 miles (3.9km) of the highway are known as Frink Street while the northern 1.5 miles (2.4km) of the highway are known as State Street.
Route description
SC 2 is a 3.9-mile (6.3km), two-lane road just southwest of Columbia, serving as a business route for Cayce. It begins at the US21/US176/US321 concurrency heading northeast. It then takes a turn to the north and runs parallel to the Congaree River to its west. Shortly after passing US1, the highway ends at US378 in West Columbia. The highway runs by an elementary school, Brookland-Cayce High School, two shopping centers, and a park.
History
SC 2 is one of the original state highways. The original route went from the Georgia state line north of Mountain Rest heading east towards Greenville before turning southeast and ending in Charleston, spanning over 250 miles (400km). It was considered the state's "Main Street" in the 1920s and 1930s. The road began construction in 1923 and ended 11 years later in 1932. The road was re-designated as US76, US176 and US178 in the 1940s and has been reduced to just under four miles (6.4km).
