Albania (i/ælˈbeɪniə/, al-BAY-nee-ə, or sometimes /ɔːlˈbeɪniə/, awl-BAY-nee-ə; Albanian:Shqipëri/Shqipëria; Gheg Albanian:Shqipni/Shqipnia, Shqypni/Shqypnia), officially known as the Republic of Albania (Albanian:Republika e Shqipërisë; Albanian pronunciation:[ɾɛpuˈblika ɛ ʃcipəˈɾiːs]), is a country in Southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, the Republic of Macedonia to the east, and Greece to the south and southeast. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the west and on the Ionian Sea to the southwest. It is less than 72km (45mi) from Italy, across the Strait of Otranto which connects the Adriatic Sea to the Ionian Sea.
The modern-day territory of Albania was at various points in history part of the Roman provinces of Dalmatia (southern Illyricum), Macedonia (particularly Epirus Nova), and Moesia Superior. The modern Republic became independent after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in Europe following the Balkan Wars. Albania declared independence in 1912 and was recognized the following year. It then became a Principality, Republic, and Kingdom until being invaded by Italy in 1939, which formed Greater Albania. The latter eventually turned into a Nazi German protectorate in 1943. The following year, a socialistPeople's Republic was established under the leadership of Enver Hoxha and the Party of Labour. Albania experienced widespread social and political transformations during the communist era, as well as isolationism from much of the international community. In 1991, the Socialist Republic was dissolved and the Republic of Albania was established.
The toponymAlbania may indicate several different geographical regions: a country in the Balkans; an ancient land in the Caucasus; as well as Scotland, Albania being a Latinization of a Gaelic name for Scotland, Alba. This article will cover etymology, as well as trace the usage of the toponyms and related toponyms and ethnonyms from their earliest known occurrence down to present times.
Albania (Caucasus)
Albania as the name of Caucasian Albania, a state and historical region of eastern Caucasus, that existed on the territory of present-day republic of Azerbaijan (where both of its capitals were located) and partially southern Dagestan.
However, unlike the names of the other two European countries, this name was an exonym given to them by the Romans, as no one knew what these inhabitants called themselves. Compare also the land in Caucasus called Iberia, with the Iberian peninsula in Europe.
Albania (Balkans)
Albania as the name of a region in the Balkans attested in Medieval Latin. It may derive from an ethnonym, Albanoi, the name of an Illyrian tribe.
Some linguists propose a derivation from the Proto-Indo-European root *albho-, which meant 'white'; referring perhaps to the snow-capped mountains of Albania.
Others think the source may be a non-Indo-European root *alb-, meaning "hill, mountain", also present in alp "mountain pasture".
Albania Veneta, Venetian possessions in southern the coastal area of what is now northern Albania and the coast of Montenegro.
Sanjak of Albania, a subdivision of the Rumelia Eyalet of Ottoman Empire in period 1385–1466
Albanian Vilayet, a vilayet of the Ottoman Empire projected in 1912 in the western Balkan Peninsula
Independent Albania, former unrecognized country established in 1912 comprising the territories of Kosovo Vilayet, Monastir Vilayet, Shkodër Vilayet and Janina Vilayet
Republic of Central Albania, a short-lived unrecognized state established on October 16, 1913 with its administrative centre in Durrës, today in Albania
Principality of Albania, a short-lived (March—September 1914) monarchy in Albania constituted by the ambassadors of Great Powers on 29 July 1913
Today we share the things to know before you visit Albania, including the Albania currency, how to get around Albania and when to visit Albania. We also look at things to do in Tirana Albania and the things to do in Albania as a whole, all in this Albania travel video.

LIFE in ALBANIA! - JUST LOOK at the WOMEN and the BEAUTY OF THIS COUNTRY - ALBANIA DOCUMENTARY VLOG
Albania, a small Balkan country with a rich history, has been shaped by Ottoman, Italian, and communist influences. Despite its size, Albania's cultural reach extends to neighboring Kosovo and North Macedonia, where many identify as Albanian. After its Ottoman era, Albania experienced invasions and eventually communist rule under Enver Hoxha, who modernized education and infrastructure but banned religion. Today, remnants of communism, like underground tunnels, serve as museums. Albania's economy remains modest, with low wages and high living costs, prompting emigration. Despite economic struggles, Albanians maintain strong family values, religious tolerance, and warm hospitality, drawing tourists to its coastline. You will also learn about Life in Albania, Life In Tirana, Albania Country Video, Italian Invasion Of Albania, History Of Albania, Where Is Albania, Albania Country, Albania Capital City, Albania Language Spoken, Albania Travel, Albania Language, Where Is Albania Located In The World, Living In Albania As An American, Albania Europe Country, Albania Travel Vlog, Albania Documentary Vlog, Europe Countries To Visit, Albania Holiday Destination, History Of The Balkans, Balkans, History Of The Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire, Albania Tourism, Albania Holiday, Life In Other Countries, Most Beautiful Places In Europe, Beautiful Women In The World, City With Most Beautiful Woman In The World, Most Beautiful Places In Europe, Life In Other Countries, Where Is Albania Located In The World, Life In Albania Today, Albania Country Vlog, and Beautiful Country In The World.

This is a video about the Socialist People's Republic of Albania, a state that lasted for half a century and epitomised an isolationist and quasi-xenophobic foreign policy. While today Albania is open to the world and nominally democratic, despite its issues with corruption, in the mid to late 20th century it was ruled by a paranoid tyrant akin only to North Korea's Kim Il Sung - this video intends to shed some light on this relatively unknown period of European history and specifically the life and disposition of one of the most brutal dictators Europe has ever seen.
There's so much more meat to this topic that I unfortunately didn't have time to cover, like Hoxha's prohibition of religious organisation within Albania and his innumerable purges - if you'd like to read more into this subject you'll find plenty of great sources in the script above.

Morozova, Maria & Rusakov, Alexander (Institute for Linguistic Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Saint Petersburg), Anastasia Escher (University of Zurich). Albanian and South Slavic dialects in contact and comparison: A quantitative study
In his well-known work “The Slavic population in Albania” (1931), Afanasiy Selishchev examined a whole range of issues related to the historical ethnic and language contacts between Slavs and Albanians: Slavic borrowings in the Albanian language, Slavic place names in Albania, and the history of Slavic colonization of this region from the 9th century. Lecture 5: Regional Histories: History of Caucasian Albania & History of the House of the Artsrunik
Series Description: The Armenian historical tradition is rich and well developed, with texts written in this genre produced continuously from the first century after the invention of the alphabet up until the modern period. Of all the Armenian literary genres, it is the histories that have received the most attention from modern scholars, thanks to their importance for our knowledge of the Near East and Mediterranean. Nevertheless, the Armenians who wrote their histories did not conceive of history in the same way we do today, nor did they approach their topics with the same preoccupations and concerns of modern historians. In this six-week course, we will seek to approach the Armenian histories on their own terms, attempting to understand the context in which they were produced, the relig...

The Name And Etymology Of Albania
Albania is the Medieval Latin name of the country, which is called Shqipëri by its people, from Medieval Greek Ἀλβανία Albania, besides variants Albanitia or Arbanitia.
The name may be derived from the Illyrian tribe of the Albani recorded by Ptolemy, the geographer and astronomer from Alexandria who drafted a map in 150 AD that shows the city of Albanopolis (located northeast of Durrës).
The name may have a continuation in the name of a medieval settlement called Albanon and Arbanon, although it is not certain this was the same place. In his History written in 1079–1080, the Byzantine historian Michael Attaliates was the first to refer to Albanoi as having taken part in a revolt against Constantinople in 1043 and to the Arbanitai as subjects of the Duke of Dyrrachium. During the Middle ...

A closer look at the Albanian and South Slavic dialectology reveals a complex picture of areal features and contact-induced phenomena in the modern dialectal varieties situated on the linguistic “borders”.
In our study we attempt to shed some light on the history of language contact between Slavic and Albanian, using quantitative and more specifically dialectometric methods. The dataset includes 131 Albanian varieties and 948 varieties pertaining to Bulgaro-Macedonian and Serbo-Croatian parts of the South Slavic dialect continuum.
Having made assumptions with regard to the overall Albanian and Slavic samples, we focus on those varieties which are situated in the areas of past and present contact in Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Montenegro. On the one hand, the Albanian subdialects, which are/were subject to contact, distinguish from the others. E.g. the linguistic complexity level is lower in Southern Albania and at the periphery of the Albanian-speaking area, namely in Kosovo and North Macedonia (Morozova et al. 2020). On the other hand, South Slavic dialects of the Albanian-Slavic contact zone may differ from those located far from it. For example, the Pearson correlation test applied to a subset of Macedonian and Serbo-Croatian dialects revealed no correlation with the distance to the Albanian border for the former and a significant negative correlation for the latter group (Escher et al., in press). The results of the quantitative study are combined with knowledge about the sociolinguistic typology of contact situations (Trudgill 2011), in order to compare Albanian and Slavic and provide insights into their contact history.

In this six-week course, we will seek to approach the Armenian histories on their own terms, attempting to understand the context in which they were produced, the religious and imaginative world of the authors who composed them, and the goals and purposes that motivated both the patrons who sponsored them and the authors who wrote them. Proceeding chronologically, this semester our goal is to cover twelve major Armenian histories from the fifth to tenth centuries (about two per session). At the same time, we will introduce participants to books and online resources where they may acquire the primary texts and gain access to important secondary materials to facilitate deeper study on their own.

A seminar and a & live conversation on the life and work of Tom J. Winnifrith, with professor James Pettifer, artist Lala Meredith-Vula, and Dr. Roland Gjoni hosted by Albanian Institute.
Tom J. Winnifrith taught for almost thirty years at the University of Warwick. He has a particular interest in the Vlach minority and in Albania and is the author of several books on the Balkans including Shattered Eagles, Balkan Fragments (1995) and Badlands/Borderlands: A History of Northern Epirus/Southern Albania (2003).
Nobody’s Kingdom: A History of Northern Albania by Tom Winnifrith was posthumously published by Signal Books last month, with a Foreword by James Pettifer. It traces the history of this ruggedly beautiful region, frequently disturbed by both invaders and internal strife yet retaining a distinct national identity and character. From its origins in the ancient kingdom of Illyria and the Roman province of Illyricum, through Byzantine and Ottoman rule, the granting of Albanian independence in 1912, the rise and fall of communism to its current fragile democracy, Northern Albania can be seen as a cultural crossroads – especially remarkable given its mountainous and difficult landscape.

During the Middle Ages, the Albanians called their country Arbëri or Arbëni and referred to themselves as Arbëresh or Arbënesh.
As early as the 17th century the placename Shqipëria and the ethnic demonym Shqiptarë gradually replaced Arbëria and Arbëresh. The two terms are popularly interpreted as "Land of the Eagles" and "Children of the Eagles"
