The High Kings of Ireland (Irish:Ard Rí na hÉireann) were sometimes historical and sometimes legendary figures who had, or who are claimed to have had, lordship over the whole of Ireland.
Medieval and early modern Irish literature portrays an almost unbroken sequence of High Kings, ruling from the Hill of Tara over a hierarchy of lesser kings, stretching back thousands of years. Modern historians believe this scheme is artificial, constructed in the 8th century from the various genealogical traditions of politically powerful groups, and intended to justify the current status of those groups by projecting it back into the remote past.
The concept of national kingship is first articulated in the 7th century, but only became a political reality in the Viking Age, and even then not a consistent one. While the High Kings' degree of control varied, Ireland was never ruled by them as a politically unified state, as the High King was conceived of as an overlord exercising suzerainty over, and receiving tribute from, the independent kingdoms beneath him.
Medieval Irish historical tradition held that Ireland had been ruled by an Ard Rí or High King since ancient times, and compilations like the 11th-century Lebor Gabála Érenn, followed by early modern works like the Annals of the Four Masters and Geoffrey Keating's Foras Feasa ar Éirinn, purported to trace the line of High Kings. The corpus of early Irish law does not support the existence of such an institution, and scholars now believe it is a pseudohistorical construct of the eighth century AD, a projection into the distant past of a political entity which did not become a reality until the Normans. Rulers like Máel Sechnaill mac Máele Ruanaid declared themselves as King of All Ireland but such claims did not gain the political support of other kingdoms (i.e. Munster), the Norse and Norse-Gaels and was unable to maintain peace with his own Uí Néill kinsmen. The traditional list of High Kings of Ireland is thus a mixture of fact, legend, fiction, and propaganda. The individuals appearing prior to the fifth century AD are generally considered legendary, and the application of the title to individuals before the ninth century is considered anachronistic.
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable climate which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the Middle Ages. As of 2013, the amount of land that is wooded in Ireland is about 11% of the total, compared with a European average of 35%. There are 26 extant mammal species native to Ireland. The Irish climate is very moderated and classified as oceanic. As a result, winters are milder than expected for such a northerly area. However, summers are cooler than those in Continental Europe. Rainfall and cloud cover are abundant.

The Cromwellian Land Settlement of Ireland - Professor David Brown
The Cromwellian Land Settlement of Ireland, devised during the late 1650s, is usually seen as an extension of England’s Tudor and Stuart colonisations of the Irish provinces of Munster and Ulster respectively. While true on one level, in that a deepening process of colonisation did take place, this interpretation is an oversimplification of what happened. Under Cromwellian rule, Ireland became England’s first true imperial possession: a ’blank canvass’, to quote Cromwell directly, onto which England could paint any society it wished. However, once this grand vision passed from the conceptual to the implementation stage, it quickly became clear that those charged with realising the Protector’s dream were more interested in quick profits than a New Jerusalem.

Questions for Discussion
1. How significant was the Irish land settlement in the context of Englands colonial expansion?
2. Following the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, why was Ireland treated differently to Scotland or England?
3. Why are Ireland and the Irish commonly excluded from colonised or colonial groupings?

Emperor of Ireland | The Life of Brian Boru
Ireland had "High Kings", known as Ard Ri to the Irish, from the 9th Century AD. However, these were typically ceremonial titles, acknowledging the most powerful king on the island. Brian Boru changed that. The twelfth son of a petty king, Brian Mac Cennetig suffered greatly at the hands of Vikings and Hibernian alike. It was this suffering that fueled an unprecedented rise to power. Brian Boru went on to bring all of Ireland under his command, cementing himself in history as the first true King of Ireland. Ancient Irish History of High Kings & Chieftains... 👑 Royal Ireland
In this reading from the great P.W. Joyce's Story of Ancient Irish Civilisation, we learn how Ireland was governed by chieftains and high-kings long before Christianity and later colonialism came. The Irish genealogies suggest a line of kingship in Ireland going back into prehistoric times. Ireland's royal past explains terms like 'Royal Meath'. Once the fifth province and the seat of the high king of Ireland.

Following her father's death, Macha faced opposition from co-rulers Kimbay and Dithorba who refused her kingship because she was a woman. The island of Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom which controls the north. But given that the Irish fought a short and brutal war for independence, why didn't the north leave the UK with the rest of Ireland? To find out why Ireland is still divided watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

For the first time in a century, a British monarch has set foot on Irish soil. Queen Elizabeth II has arrived in Dublin for an historic four day state visit.
The British monarch met Irish President Mary McAleese before laying a wreath at Dublin's Garden of Remembrance.
The visit is meant to symbolise reconciliation and emphasise the strong bond between the two countries, built on generations of Irish emigration.

This lecture is part of the Connected Sociologies module on Empires and Colonialism. Read more and download lesson plans here: https://thesociologicalreview.org/projects/connected-sociologies/curriculum/empires-and-colonialism/

Ireland had "High Kings", known as Ard Ri to the Irish, from the 9th Century AD. However, these were typically ceremonial titles, acknowledging the most powerful king on the island. Brian Boru changed that. The twelfth son of a petty king, Brian Mac Cennetig suffered greatly at the hands of Vikings and Hibernian alike. It was this suffering that fueled an unprecedented rise to power. Brian Boru went on to bring all of Ireland under his command, cementing himself in history as the first true King of Ireland.

Listen to the tale of Macha the Red, the sole heir to Red Hugh, who defied tradition and conquered sovereignty in ancient Ireland. Following her father's death, Macha faced opposition from co-rulers Kimbay and Dithorba who refused her kingship because she was a woman. Undeterred, Macha rallied an army, defeated her adversaries, and claimed Ireland's throne by force. Her reign saw her cunningly capture and subdue the rebellious sons of Dithorba, ultimately sparing their lives but condemning them to build what would become the iconic Emain Macha. This story not only highlights Macha's formidable leadership but also her pivotal role in the establishment of Ulster's chief city, symbolising women's enduring influence in Irish lore. Discover how Macha's legacy is intertwined with Ireland's royal heritage, marking her as one of the few women to secure sovereignty in Irish history.

I was born in a country where people admire Their great sporting heroes and how they aspire To stand apon mountains and always be winners And never give less then their all. I once met an old man who told me great stories Of legends of those who played hard for the glory And of lifting that cup in the moment of triumph His memory's kept me enthralled (Chorus) On the fields, the fields of glory On the fields, where boys become men On the fields, the fields of glory And may the best team win, win in the end. Supporting our teem with a true sense of place Are the handfuls of people, the pride on their faces They come from the townlands, the parish, the village, Their bannaers they proudly unfurl. An anthem of hope is the song their singing, There's a wistle it sounds and the game it begins And the roar of the croud echos up to the heavens It sends out a clarion call. On the fields, the fields of glory On the fields, where boys become men On the fields, the fields of glory And may the best team win, win in the end. I'm dreamin' of Ireland in fine summer weather A crowd of young lads play'n football together All hoping that someday the call they will answer To play for the place they were born. On the fields, the fields of glory On the fields, where boys become men On the fields, the fields of glory And may the best team win, win in the end. I'm dreamin' of Ireland in fine summer weather A crowd of young lads play'n football together And the roar of the croud echos up to the heavens
