Why is the lineage so important in Tibetan Buddhism?
Lama Michel explains the importance of the lineage for the turning of the Dharma Wheel; Only a pure lineage can bring about the oral transmission of knowledge, and the transmission of experience, the realizations, in a correct way.

Discovery: Buddha's Birth Earlier Than Thought | National Geographic
The Buddha was born and lived as much as 300 years earlier than some previously thought. At one of Buddhism's most revered pilgrimage sites, a National Geographic archaeologist's team has uncovered evidence that the Buddha lived in the sixth century B.C., much earlier than some scholars had believed. The excavation at Lumbini, Nepal, long identified as the birthplace of the Buddha, revealed a previously unknown timber shrine once stood there, its walls mirroring more recent brick temples.

SUMMARY
=======
A lineage in Buddhism is a line of transmission of the Buddhist teaching that is "theoretically traced back to the Buddha himself." The acknowledgement of the transmission can be oral, or certified in documents. Several branches of Buddhism, including Chan (including Zen and Seon) and Tibetan Buddhism maintain records of their historical teachers. These records serve as a validation for the living exponents of the tradition.
The historical authenticity of Buddhist lineage is questionable. Stephen Batchelor has claimed, speaking about specifically Japanese Zen lineage, "the historicity of this “lineage” simply does not withstand critical scrutiny." Erik Storlie has noted that transmission "is simply false on historical grounds." Edward Conze said "much of the traditions about the early history of Chan are the inventions of a later age."

In this teaching Rinpoche talks about the 4 main schools of Tibetan Buddhism: Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug. He explains that the meaning of the teachings is the same in all four schools, but they have differences in emphasis. The main emphasis of Nyingmapa is practice, with the most important part of practice being the view. The main emphasis in Kagyupa is the practice of meditation, and the focus is to see your true nature. In the Sakyapa the main emphasis is on the development and completion stages of practice. And the main emphasis of the Gelupa school is study and discipline, and then to practice.
