Laugharne - A quick guide to the intriguing township Laugharne, Carmarthenshire with Fine & Country
Laugharne is a town on the south coast of Carmarthenshire, Wales, lying on the estuary of the River Tâf. The ancient borough of Laugharne Township with its Corporation and Charter is a unique survival in Wales. (Please forgive me for referring to Laugharne as a Village in the video)
Described by Dylan Thomas as one of the strangest Towns in Wales, we think it is one of the most endearing, full of charm and character with a magical peaceful sense of tranquillity. The poet is forever connected with Laugharne as he made it is home from 1949 to 1953.
Our quick guide is intended to give you a brief insight to this beautiful Township, we hope you enjoy our glimpse into Laugharne and that you will visit soon - or maybe even decide to make it your home one day!

Brown’s Hotel Laugharne - A Stay At Dylan Thomas’s Favourite Watering Hole
Brown’s Hotel in Laugharne, West Wales is now a boutique hotel but back in the day, Browns Hotels was the favourite pub of the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas.
Dylan Thomas lived in Laugharne with his wife Caitlin and his family until his death in 1953. He is buried in the local cemetery. You can visit his last home “the Boathouse” which overlooks the picturesque Taf Estuary.
You can find Brown’s Hotel in the centre of Laugharne a short walk from Laugharne castle. The building dates from 1752 and became a hotel back in the 19th century.
The hotel bar is named Dylans after Dylan Thomas and the restaurant is Dexters Steak House & Grill, named after the Dexter breed of cattle.
Just to mention - We paid for the stay and all costs ourselves.

Laugharne, Wales: A Walking Tour around Dylan Thomas’ Home Town
#Laugharne is a small village in #WestWales with a big history and the perfect stop on a drive between the Gower Peninsula and Tenby in Pembrokeshire. Here I take a short cultural walking tour of the village, discovering Laugharne Castle and the home of its famous inhabitant, poet Dylan Thomas. Checking out the boathouse where he wrote with gorgeous views over the Taf Estuary and going on in search of his simple grave in the local churchyard.
I’m no expert on his work but I enjoyed spending an hour or so exploring his hometown. I hope you enjoy it too by joining me on this video.

Laugharne
From the A477, brown signs for Dylan Thomas Boathouse guide you along beautiful country roads to Laugharne. It’s located on the coast, set in a delightful location on the estuary where the River Taf flows into Carmarthen Bay. Laugharne is, perhaps, most famously associated with Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Dylan lived in Laugharne from 1949 until his death in 1953. He once famously described the town as “a timeless, mild, beguiling island of a town”
Walk in Dylan’s Footsteps
Walkers will be familiar with Laugharne because the Wales Coastal Path runs through the town. For visitors, Cath suggests that Dylan’s Birthday Walk, at roughly 3 miles, is the best walk as well as the best way to work up a thirst. In 1944, Dylan wrote 'Poem in October' about his birthday walk, to the shoulder of Sir John'...

Early Morning Walk Around Laugharne Castle & Village In South Wales | 4K
If you enjoy this relaxing walk, please leave a comment..always interested in what you think of these walks and tours! I set off on this early morning walk at 07:30, as the village was waking up on a warm sunny morning. Enjoy the footage of Laugharne castle and village, then i was up through the woods to be rewarded by great views! Laugharne - In the 4th century BC, a promontory fort was built at the summit of the hill. During the Bronze Age, Coygan camp is recorded as the site of an open settlement with funerary and ritual activity shown by a short-cist contracted inhumation. Further finds at a nearby round barrow on Laugharne Burrows together with Beaker burials at Plashett and Orchard Park confirm a more permanent community. In the Early Middle Ages Laugharne was the main settlement in ...

Places to see in ( Laugharne - UK )
Laugharne is a town in Carmarthenshire, Wales, lying on the estuary of the River Tâf. It is known for having been the home of Dylan Thomas from 1949 until his death in 1953, and is thought to have been an inspiration for the fictional town of Llareggub in Under Milk Wood.
A castle, known originally as the Castle of Abercorran, existed in Laugharne before the Norman Conquest and belonged to the princes of South Wales. Henry II visited it in 1172 on his return from Ireland and made peace with Prince Rhys of Dinefwr. Through the marriage of Prince Rhys' daughter, the castle passed to Sir Guy de Brian, who had been Lord High Admiral of England. His daughter Elizabeth inherited the castle and married Owen Laugharne of St. Bride's who gave his name to the castle.
Laugharne Corporation is an almost unique institution, and, together with the City of London Corporation, the last surviving mediæval corporation in the United Kingdom. The Corporation was established in 1291 by Sir Guy de Brian (Gui de Brienne), a Marcher Lord. The Corporation is presided over by the Portreeve, wearing his traditional chain of gold cockle shells, (one added by each portreeve, with his name and date of tenure on the reverse), the Aldermen, and the body of Burgesses.
The famous Charter of Laugharne, which the corporation was founded by, came about during a tempestuous time in local Welsh history. Henry II (Plantagenet) held a parley with Rhys ap Gruffydd at Laugharne Castle in 1172. After Henry’s death, Rhys seized St. Clears, Llanstephan and Laugharne, and then lost them again to the crown.
Attractions in the town include the 12th-century Laugharne Castle, the town hall and the birdlife of the estuary. Architecturally, Laugharne contains many fine examples of Georgian townhouses, including "Great House" and Castle House, both grade II* listed buildings, with a scattering of earlier vernacular cottages. There are a number of landmarks in Laugharne connected with the poet and writer Dylan Thomas. These include the Dylan Thomas Birthday Walk, which was the setting for the work Poem in October, and The Boathouse, where he lived with his family from 1949 to 1953; it is now a museum.

In 1944, Dylan wrote 'Poem in October' about his birthday walk, to the shoulder of Sir John's hill. The beautiful poem is about his love of Laugharne and getting older.
In the centre of Laugharne is the Grist, marked by a Celtic Cross, where Methodist leader John Wesley is said to have preached to the townsfolk. The name reflects the fact that a former grist mill was located here. Choices is a quaint gift shop located here. It offers a variety of local crafts and Dylan Thomas memorabilia to remember your visit

In the Early Middle Ages Laugharne was the main settlement in the area and home to the Lords of Laugharne. It was a commote of Gwarthaf, the largest of the seven cantrefi of the Kingdom of Dyfed in southwest Wales, later to be ruled by the Princes of Deheuberth. In 1093, Deheubarth was seized by the Normans following Rhys ap Tewdwr's death. In the early 12th century, grants of lands were made to Flemings by King Henry I when their country was flooded. In 1154, the Anarchy was resolved when Henry II became king; two years later, Lord Rhys agreed peace terms with Henry II and prudentl] accepted that he would only rule Cantref Mawr, constructing Dinefwr Castle there. Henry II de-mobilised Flemish soldiers who had aided him during the Anarchy, settling them with the other Flemings. From time to time, however, King Henry had occasion to go to Ireland, or Normandy, which Lord Rhys took as an opportunity to try and expand his own holdings. Returning from Ireland after one such occasion, in 1172, King Henry made peace with Lord Rhys, making him the justiciar of "South Wales" (ie. Deheubarth). By 1247, Laugharne was held by Guy de Bryan; this is the earliest reference to his family possessing the castle, and his father (also named Guy de Bryan) had only moved the family to Wales in 1219 (from Devon). Guy de Bryan's descendants continued to hold the castle; his namesake great-grandson was Lord High Admiral of England. The latter's daughter Elizabeth inherited the castle and married an Owen of St Bride's who subsequently took his name – Owen Laugharne – from the castle
