Why is Belgium so Divided?
Belgium's history of linguistic division is as old as the country itself, the northern half being Dutch or Flemish speaking while the southern half is French or Walloon speaking. And we haven't even got into the German speakers living on Belgium's eastern fringes! The two larger language groups each attempt to rule their own independently having essentially segregated governments for Flanders and Wallonia, however the crisis of 2007 - 2011 showed that while the northern Flemings wanted more decentralisation and autonomy, the southern Walloons were dead set against it. Since then a split of Belgium along these lines has seemed inevitable, but this led me to question: how on earth did Belgium become so divided? The story will take us back to the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France, W...

* 6:10 - "Duits gedeelte" - Compared to the Netherlands, Belgium is a complicated country with a complex system of governance, 6 governments in total, structured on both regional and linguistic grounds. Belgium has a federal Belgian government and is divided into three highly autonomous regions, each with their own government too: Flanders in the north, Wallonia in the south, and the Brussels-Capital Region. Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups or communities: the Dutch-speaking Flemish Community (which has the same government as the Flemish regional government), about 60 percent of the population. Then there is the French-speaking Community, about 40 percent of the population. A small German-speaking Community, numbering around one percent, exists in the East Cantons. Both of these Communities have their own government too because the 3 regions of Belgium do not overlap with the languages spoken there, except for Flanders where the main language is Flemish. In Brussels however, the main language is French, followed by Flemish and a whole range of other international languages. The main language spoken in Wallonia is French and only a small part of it speaks German, close to the border with Germany. The three Communities represent the three official languages of Belgium: (Flemish) Dutch, French and German. This linguistic diversity also results in different and varied cultural identities which, culturally speaking, do not often interact with each other (different television channels, news outlets, etc.). In comparison, the Netherlands is relatively straightforward with only one central government and both a linguistic and cultural unity as Dutch is the main and only standardized language with only some recognized provincial languages (mainly West Frisian) and regional dialects.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Produced by Easy Languages GmbH
Easy Languages is an international video project aiming at supporting people worldwide in learning languages through authentic street interviews. Our videos also give an opportunity to gain insight into cultural and social phenomena of different countries and peoples around the world. Our episodes are produced in different languages and include subtitles in both the original language of each video and in English. We also produce videos in easy and slower language for beginners, podcasts in the different languages of the project and additional learning material to provide a broader learning experience for anyone interested!
🔸 You can listen to many other languages on the Easy Languages channel! 🤩
