SAILING | ⛵ The Jules Verne Trophy Idec Sport - Quiberon 24 TV
The decision to set sail on Sunday evening was taken at the last moment in Brest, with lots of uncertainties in the various weather charts. The highly experienced Swiss sailor,
Bernard Stamm summed up the attitude of the crew as they cast off: “If we waited for ideal conditions, we’d never go.” The IDEC SPORT maxi trimaran began its attempt at the record held since 2012 by Loïck Peyron in surprising conditions. The first nine hours after leaving Ushant saw them wallowing in an area where there was hardly any wind. It was only early this morning (Monday), that the big blow arrived. Spindrift - Jules Verne Trophy - Crossing the Cape Horn drone footages
To undertake the crewed around-the-world record is as much about the human adventure as it is a technical and sporting challenge. The men and women working alongside Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard at Spindrift racing have been preparing this race against the clock for almost three years. The target: to sail around the world in less than 45 days, 13 hours and 42 minutes. The tough record they will try to beat was set by Loïck Peyron and his crew in 2012 on Banque Populaire V, which was renamed Spindrift 2 a year later.
The French-Swiss team decided to use the same 40 m trimaran because they believed that the boat could be further optimised, a task that sailors, engineers and technicians at the team have been working on ever since. After countless hours of work at the boatyard and 40,000...

This meant that IDEC SPORT was finally able to head towards the SW and pick up speed.
Stopped for a long time during the night, the start was puzzling for some observers. Francis Joyon and his men had to remain patient while awaiting the arrival of the strong NNW’ly winds. “The idea was to be ready for the arrival of this front,” explained Marcel van Triest, the router for the Maxi trimaran IDEC SPORT, It was only at around 8 this morning that IDEC SPORT finally turned to the SW to begin her attempt at the record and take off at thirty knots, which is the speed they have kept up since then. The consequence of this wait was that Joyon and his boys are 207 miles off the pace this Monday morning, but since then, they have been at a steady speed in the Bay of Biscay.
Decent time to the Equator and an interesting time to the Cape of Good Hope
“Unlike what we saw in the charts a fortnight ago,” explained Marcel, “we can see a decent time to the Equator of around five days and twelve hours, which is much more than last year (5 days and 1 hour), but a very interesting time to the Cape of Good Hope of around 13 and a half days, meaning they may be able to avoid going too far south in amongst the ice, as our routing showed when we were looking at an opening on 6th November.”

On 1 November 2020, the crew of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild will officially begin its meteorological stand-by to set sail on the Jules Verne Trophy, the round the world record under sail!
Aboard the 32-metre giant, there will be a crew of six working in relay day and night in a bid to beat the current record of 40 days 23 hours and 30 minutes held by Francis Joyon and IDEC Sport since 2017. Among them, Morgan Lagravière and David Boileau. The first is known and acknowledged for his incredible feel for the helm and his acumen with regards getting a boat making fast, indeed very fast headway. The second is one of the mainstays of the Gitana Team, of which he has been a part for over ten years. The boat’s strongman, crew and an extraordinary technician, David Boileau is the boat captain on the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild.
Though they hail from very different backgrounds, the two sailors have a number of things in common: they both share a passion for anything that flies, they’ll both be on watch in the round the world and they’ll be contesting their very first Jules Verne Trophy. So here we have the boat’s rookies presented to you via this quick profile comparison!

Francis Joyon
Francis Joyon back, but this time with a crew by tackling the legendary Jules Verne Trophy, the crewed round the world voyage, at the helm of a maxi trimaran (ex Groupama 3 then Banque Populaire VII). The time to beat is 45 days 13 hours 42 minutes and 53 seconds set in 2012 by Loïck Peyron and his crew on Banque Populaire V. If he manages to do better, Francis Joyon will become the first man to hold the two finest world records sailing solo and with a crew. The bar is high up, but certainly not above the capability of a sailor like Francis Joyon.
He wants to become the first sailor to hold the two most prestigious round the world records, sailing solo and with a crew (the Jules Verne Trophy): Francis Joyon’s latest challenge is certainly a fascinating one. It is what you might expect from a sailor, who although very discreet when ashore, is tough and determined at sea, and over the years has built up an exceptional list of successes.
The crew IDEC : There are five members in Francis’s small team
Bernard Stamm: A round the world specialist
Gwénolé Gahinet: Success at an early age…
Alex Pella: The Spanish Swiss army knife
Boris Herrmann: The German pioneer
Clément Surtel: An expert in giant trimarans
Roland Jourdain: A classy substitute

After countless hours of work at the boatyard and 40,000 nautical miles of racing and training, the Spindrift racing-prepared trimaran is all set to go. The team will officially go on stand-by on October 19th and wait for the ideal weather window.
