Cape Horn (Dutch: Kaap Hoorn, Spanish:Cabo de Hornos), named after the city of Hoorn in the Netherlands, is the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuegoarchipelago of southern Chile, and is located on the small Hornos Island. Although not the most southerly point of South America (which are the Diego Ramírez Islands), Cape Horn marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage and marks where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans collide. For decades it was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. The waters around Cape Horn are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and Icebergs; these dangers have made it notorious as a sailors' graveyard.
Cape Horn (also Hoorn) is the southernmost headland of Hornos Island at the Drake Passage, sometimes erroneously known as the southernmost point of America.
The most DANGEROUS Sea Route on the planet. Past Cape Horn and the Drake Passage!

The Jonathan, owned and captained by Mark Van De Weg, after several weeks in Antarctica in late January 2015 rounded Cape Horn. Cape Horn lies at fifty-six degrees South latitude. The Drake Passage is even lower. Their reputation is so bad that it's hard to imagine a worse one. Today you will discover the location of the most powerful ocean current, why sailors were honored to wear an earring in their left ear, and how a private company could oppose entire states?
Cape Horn, located on the like-named island, is the southernmost point of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. There are more than 500 miles from it to Antarctica. Although it is often mistakenly referred to as the southernmost point of the continental landmass of America itself, but this is not exactly true.
Such a point is Cape Froward, while Cape Horn is located on an island. The word "on the edge of the world" is just the right term for such points on the planet. Two oceans meet here: the Atlantic and the Pacific, which creates a unique, but very treacherous climate for the navigator.
The weather on the island tends to be windy and overcast, with almost no sun. There are more than 280 rainy days a year. Temperatures range from 28.4 to 57.2 degrees Fahrenheit. The average wind speed is 95 miles per hour. Just to be clear - even the average wind strength on the island is a category 1 hurricane according to the Saffir-Simpson scale, which is why many call the climate in the Cape Horn area the worst on earth.
So get comfy. We're gonna tell you all about it.

You wanted to see if we could make it.
You wanted to see a great adventure and sailing in extreme conditions.
We went looking for these conditions as we felt that choosing a calm weather window to round Cape Horn would be, well, disappointing, not to you, but to us. It would not be the challenge we were looking for.
We wanted to summit the Mt. Everest. Somehow, climbing that mountain on a sunny warm day with no wind and waves felt like selling ourselves short. We wanted huge waves. We wanted gale force winds. We wanted freezing cold temps.
Some may say seeking out these conditions is unsafe, or risky. Those people are not 100% wrong, but we say those people are living in fear. Don't be afraid! To experience true freedom is to live life without fear.
That being said, do not go sailing in these conditions without being well prepared and able to self rescue, do not put your life, your sailboat, and the lives of sea rescue personnel are at risk. We are both very experienced sailors and have sailed countless miles in harsh conditions while racing, solo sailing, and doublehanded sailing to prepare for this type of sailing.
Now enjoy a sailing video that we had lots of fun making. Click subscribe and come along for this awesome rollercoaster ride of an extreme sailing day!

It was like riding a port over a waterfall, sir And wind is not the name for what blows in your face It's something made of iron Swings at you from the west Never changin' day in and day out With seas as high as the main mast We had lifelines rigged everywhere, sir And there were still 16 men washed over board Cold, three men froze in the yards, frozen stiff, sir Couldn't get them down without cutting their fingers
