It was opened during the 1980s called Al-Bakr Air Base which housed Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 fighters, during the 2000s the base was occupied by the United States Armed Forces as part of the Iraq War and called both Balad Air Base by the United States Air Force and LSA Anaconda by the United States Army before being renamed Joint Base Balad on 15 June 2008. The base was handed back to the Iraqi Air Force during December 2011 returning to be called Balad Air Base.
Balad was formerly known as al-Bakr AB, named in honor of Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, the president of Iraq from 1968 to 1979. It was considered by many in the Iraqi military to be the most important airfield of the Iraqi Air Force. During most of the 1980s, it operated with at least a brigade level force, with two squadrons of Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 fighters. Al-Bakr AB was especially well known for the large number of hardened aircraft shelters (HAS) built by the Yugoslavs during the Iran–Iraq War in the mid-1980s. It had four hardened areas—one each on either end of the main runways—with approximately 30 individual aircraft shelters.
During the Iraq War Balad was, in 2006, the site of sectarian violence involving Sunni and Shi'ite militias.
In 2007 the mayor, Amir Abdul Hadi, escaped an assassination attempt.
Military installations
The largest military air base in Iraq, formerly LSA Anaconda, Balad Air Base, or Al-Bakir Air Base, is located within the municipality of Yethrib near Balad. As of early 2007 the base was the central hub for airlift and US Air Force operations in Iraq; it was also a major transshipment point for US Army supply convoys.
On the outskirts of Balad proper is a tiny forward operating base called Balad Joint Coordination Center (formerly FOB Paliwoda). FOB Paliwoda had been occupied by 3rd Squadron 4th US Cavalry in an effort to create a joint effort between coalition and local forces.
The Kingdom of Iraq under British Administration or Mandatory Iraq (Arabic:الانتداب البريطاني على العراقal-Intidāb al-Brīṭānī ‘Alá al-‘Irāq) was created in 1921 following the 1920 Iraqi Revolt against the proposed British Mandate of Mesopotamia, and enacted via the 1922 Anglo-Iraqi Treaty.
Faisal ibn Husayn, who had been proclaimed King of Syria by a Syrian National Congress in Damascus in March 1920, was ejected by the French in July of the same year. Faisal was then granted by the British the territory of Iraq, to rule it as a kingdom, with the British Royal Air Force (RAF) retaining certain military control, though de facto; the territory remained under British administration until 1932.
The civil government of postwar Iraq was headed originally by the High Commissioner, Sir Percy Cox, and his deputy, ColonelArnold Wilson. British reprisals after the murder of a British officer in Najaf failed to restore order. The most striking problem facing the British was the growing anger of the nationalists, who continued to fight against the imposition of British authority. British administration had yet to be established in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The indigenous Sumerians and Akkadians (including Assyrians and Babylonians) dominated Mesopotamia from the beginning of written history (c. 3100 BC) to the fall of Babylon in 539 BC, when it was conquered by the Achaemenid Empire. It fell to Alexander the Great in 332 BC, and after his death, it became part of the Greek Seleucid Empire.
Iraq's autonomous Kurdish government says 727 of its fighters have been killed in battles with ISIL since June. ISIL has been trying to take control of strategic areas in Iraq. The latest town to come under siege is Balad, north of Baghdad. Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf reports from Baghdad.

Although the feted F16 is considered a game changer by Iraqi pilots, air support from the US is in fact decreasing.
But training is on the up.
STORYLINE:
The F16 programme at Balad Air Base in Iraq is changing tack.
The shift puts a greater emphasis on the training of Iraqi pilots.
"I think the F16 has stepped up the Iraqi Air force game for the next level," says Major Hama of the Iraqi Air Force. And this will be essential as the coalition seeks to scale down its direct involvement with air attacks.
Following Baghdad's declaration of victory over the Islamic State group, the US-led coalition is therefore decreasing air support for Iraq.
American and Iraqi air force commanders say the coalition will instead focus more on training and Iraq's air force will assume more of the "missions duties and responsibilities" to maintain the country's hard-fought victories over IS.
"We as the air component are going to transition from an advise and assist role... to the train, advise and assist role," says US Air Force Brigadier General Andrew Croft at a meeting with the commander of the Iraqi Air Force General Anwar Hama Ameen.
"We work in close coordination with the Office of Security Cooperation here in Iraq - they manage a lot of these foreign military sales - but we are very in close cooperation with those folks to insure that we have a coherent and logical plan to get the Iraqi Air Force towards a long term sustainable and professional force," Croft adds.
Coalition airstrikes proved to be decisive early on in the fight against IS.
Before the US began a campaign of airstrikes against IS in August 2014, the extremists could easily travel across the vast swaths of territory - much of it open desert - under their control in Iraq and neighbouring Syria. Just weeks after overrunning Mosul, IS fighters launched a push on the city of Irbil in Iraq's Kurdish region that was largely repelled by coalition air power.
In the months that followed, the extremists' territorial gains were largely halted and over the next three years Iraqi ground forces with close coalition air support pushed IS out of towns, villages and cities across the country. In December 2017 Iraq's prime minister declared victory over the group.
Croft said a well trained and equipped Iraqi Air Force could have prevented the fall of Mosul in the first place.
"A couple of airplanes and a couple of controllers, that would never have happened," he said referring to IS' blitz across Iraq in the summer of 2014.
However maintaining a modern air force has been prohibitively expensive for Iraq. Last month, Contracting firm Sallyport Global Holdings was awarded a 400 million US dollar contract for base operations and security for Iraq's F16 program by the US Air Force.
By training Iraqis to maintain and secure their own equipment, Iraqi air force commander Ameen says he hopes to bring down costs.
Iraq continues to struggle with a budget crisis sparked by a downturn in global oil prices and years of mismanagement of natural resource revenues.
"My ambition is to make the Iraqi Air Force a strong one to defend our country and its sovereignty," Ameen says. "Not to fight against neighbouring countries but to engage with them in military exercises."

Iraq Slams U.S. and Israel for Using Its Airspace to Launch Attacks on Iran, ‘Do Not Exploit…’
Iraq has strongly condemned the use of its airspace by the U.S. and Israel for launching attacks on Iran, calling it a violation of its sovereignty. The country’s National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji, reiterated Iraq’s firm stance against the exploitation of its territory for military actions against any neighbouring nation. This follows allegations that Israel used U.S.-controlled airspace over Iraq to conduct airstrikes on Iranian military sites. Iraq has submitted formal protests to the United Nations, demanding accountability for the breach of its airspace and emphasising its commitment to maintaining neutrality and regional peace.

(13 Feb 2018) LEADIN

The Vermont Air National Guard deployed 40 miles north of Baghdad, Iraq to Balad Air Force Base to provide U.S. Army and Marine Corp troops coveted aerial surveillance and protection with the F-16 FIghting Falcon.
Being in a war zone, soldiers at Joint Base Balad face danger every day, even on base thanks to the ever present threat of mortar and rocket attacks. KXLY4's Dave Erickson has more from Joint Base Balad.
