Al Anbar Governorate (Arabic:محافظة الأنبار; muḥāfaẓa al-’Anbār) (or Anbar Province) is, geographically, the largest governorate in Iraq. Encompassing much of the country's western territory, it shares borders with Syria, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. The provincial capital is Ramadi, and other important cities in the province include Fallujah and Haditha.
Before 1976 the governorate was known as Ramadi; before 1962, it was known as Dulaim. In 1976 it was renamed Al Anbar Province. Nearly all the inhabitants of the province are Sunni Muslims and mostly from the Dulaim tribe.
In early 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, with the assistance of local Sunni militia launched a successful campaign to conquer the province from the Iraqi government. Since then, numerous offensive actions have been launched by the Iraqi government to remove ISIL's occupation of the province. As of early January 2016, Ramadi, Kesrah and Nukhayb have been liberated by the Iraqi government.
