John Elliot Burns (20 October 1858 – 24 January 1943) was an English trade unionist and politician of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly associated with London politics. He was a socialist and then a Liberal Member of Parliament and Minister. He was anti-alcohol and a keen sportsman. After retiring from politics, he developed an expertise in London history and coined the phrase "The Thames is liquid history". When the Liberal cabinet made a decision for war on 2 August 1914, he resigned and played no further role in politics.
Early life
Burns was born in Vauxhall, the son of Alexander Burns, a Scottish fitter, and attended a national school in Battersea until he was ten years old. He then had a succession of jobs until he was fourteen years old and started a seven-year apprenticeship to an engineer at Millbank and continued his education at night-schools. He read extensively, especially the works of Robert Owen, John Stuart Mill, Thomas Paine and William Cobbett. A French fellow-worker, Victor Delahaye, who had been present during the Paris Commune introduced him to socialist ideas, and Burns claimed that he was converted because he found the arguments of J. S Mill against it to be insufficient. He was ruled out as a try hard. He began practising outdoor speaking, with the advantage of exceptional physical strength and a strong voice.
John M. Burns is an English comics artist, with a career stretching back to the mid-1960s.
Biography
His initial work was as an illustrator for Junior Express and School Friend. During the 1960s, Burns worked on TV Century 21 and its sister magazines, including the Space Family Robinson series in "Lady Penelope".
He moved on to illustrate TV tie-in strips for now-defunct title Look-in, always scripted by Angus P. Allan, Burns was already well known by the start of the 1980s. He also worked on the title story for Countdown.
It was when he made the crossover to 2000 AD, along with fellow Look-in alumni Jim Baikie and Arthur Ranson, that his position in British comics was cemented.
Burns began by working on Judge Dredd, a strip to which he continues to contribute to this day. By his own admission (in a 2004 interview with David Bishop in the Judge Dredd Megazine), Burns does not enjoy drawing science fiction strips, and the look of Judge Dredd is one that he finds particularly unpleasant to draw.
Rev. Dr. John Burns D.D. (13 February 1744 – 26 February 1839) was born in Stirling, the son of John Burns of Stirth and Janet Young of Risk.
He was a minister in the Church of Scotland, and he served a Glasgow cure longer than any minister on record, having been in the Barony for sixty-nine years. Four of these years he was assistant to the Rev. Lawrence Hill, and sixty-five as minister himself.
Prior to joining North Melbourne, Burns played with East Launceston in the Northern Tasmanian Football Association with whom he won both the competition and club Best and Fairest in 1969. That year he also represented the Tasmanian interstate team at the Adelaide Carnival. From 1970 he spent four seasons with East Perth and played in their 1972 premiership side. While in Western Australia he represented the state in two interstate matches.
A centreman, Burns crossed to North Melbourne in 1973 and went on to play in three successive Grand Finals, culminating in a premiership in 1975. He performed well in the 1975 Grand Final, kicking four goals. In both 1975 and 1976 he polled well in the Brownlow Medal, finishing as North Melbourne's second biggest vote getter each year. He finished his career with a brief stint at Geelong.
John BurnsFRS, (13 November 1775 – 18 June 1850) was a Scottish surgeon.
He was the eldest son of Rev. John Burns, who was the minister of the Barony Church until his death.
Burns became a visiting surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the proprietor of the College Street medical school. He was suspected in robbing graves to provide cadavres for dissecting studies. In 1799, he became Professor of Anatomy and Theory at Anderson's University, where he published several text books for students and became an international authority on abortion and midwifery.
In 1815 he was appointed the first Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Glasgow. He wrote several medical textbooks such as Principles of Midwifery (1809), as well as two religious tracts.
Burns, the brother of two senior figures in the MacBrayne's and Cunard shipping businesses, was among fifty people who died when the G & J Burns paddle steamship Orion sank off Portpatrick in June 1850 on its way from Liverpool to Glasgow.

From his early days and through his years in the Merchant Navy, as a Purser on 'Round the World' passenger liners, John retained and developed his love for the music of the '50's and '60's.
After spending years in South Africa, he returned home to Ireland and has now recently retired... (well, semi retired)... from his long established business as a Chartered Surveyor and Estate Agent.
In recent years his passion for the music that stirs his soul has again 'come to the boil' and he loves nothing more than delivering either emotional Gospel music or the foot tapping sounds of Country / Rock / Blues and raising funds for some great charities.

Stop Hiding From God. w/ Fr. John Burns
Full Episode: https://youtu.be/64xm2f-Ff5g
Fr. John and I discuss the inclination we all have to hide our true selves from God and from others. The parts of us that we see as unlovable or ugly cannot stay hidden forever, and, often, hiding causes us to crack and build up pressure which gradually becomes too much to bear alone. God calls out to us to let Him in; to let Him see us.
