John Allen (died 1855) was an Irish nationalist, and later a colonel in the French army.
John Allen was a native of Dublin, where he was also for some time a partner in a drapery business. Along with Arthur O'Connor he was tried for high treason at Maidstone in February 1798, but acquitted. He was an associate of Robert Emmet and involved in the rebellion of 1803.
After the abortive result of the project of Emmet, whose special confidence he enjoyed, Allen escaped from Dublin in the uniform of the Trinity College Yeomanry corps, and obtained a passage in a vessel to France. Entering the Irish Legion, he was promoted colonel for leading the storming party at the capture of Astorga, in Spain, in 1810. During the second occupation of Paris his surrender was, it is said, demanded by the British government; but while being conducted to the frontier, he made his escape, with the connivance of the gendarmes who had him in charge, at the last station on French territory. Subsequently he took up his residence at Caen, in Normandy. Allen was a Protestant. He is stated in Miles Byrne's Memoirs (iii. 190) to have died at Caen 10 Feb. 1855.
John Aubrey Allen is an Australian-born first-class cricketer who played for Oxford University Cricket Club. Both his first class games were for Oxford University, one of which was a varsity match
The Connecticut River is the longest river in the New England region of the United States. Flowing roughly southward for 406.12 miles (653.59km) through four U.S. states, the Connecticut rises at the U.S. border with Quebec, Canada, and discharges at Long Island Sound. Its watershed encompasses five U.S. states and one Canadian province – 11,260 square miles (29,200km2) – via 148 tributaries, 38 of which are major rivers. Discharging at 19,600 cubic feet (560m3) per second, the Connecticut produces 70% of Long Island Sound's freshwater.
The Connecticut River Valley is home to some of the northeastern United States' most productive farmland, as well as a metropolitan region of approximately 2 million people surrounding Springfield, Massachusetts, and the state of Connecticut's capital, Hartford.
Etymology
The word "Connecticut" is a French corruption of the Mohegan word quinetucket, which means "beside the long, tidal river". The word "Connecticut" came into existence during the early 1600s, describing the river, which was also called simply "The Great River".

New Haven Pride Center co-president and founder John Allen and husband Keith Hyatte aren't waiting to create their legacy. During LGBT Pride Month (June of 2019), the couple decided it was time that giving back to the LGBTQ+ community take on a new form — one that will provide a revenue stream long after their lifetimes. Allen and Hyatte established a donor advised fund at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven so that LGBTQ+ interests will be advanced for generations to come.
