New Milford is a town in southern Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States14 miles (23km) north of Danbury, on the Housatonic River. It is the largest town in the state in terms of land area at nearly 62 square miles (161km2). The population was 28,671 according to the Census Bureau's 2006 estimates. The town center is also listed as a census-designated place (CDP).
It is located roughly 55 miles from Hartford, 75 miles from Springfield, 100 miles from Albany and 85 from NYC.
Weantinock were a sub-group of the Paugussett Nation who lived the area of modern New Milford both before and during the colonial era. They were a farming and fishing culture, cultivating corn, squash, beans and tobacco, and fishing in freshwater areas. They may have also travelled to the coast to fish in summer months.
The New Milford Railroad Station is a historic railroad station on Railroad Street in New Milford, Connecticut. It is a long and narrow wood-frame building with a gable roof, built in 1886 by the Housatonic Railroad Company, which was acquired by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. The station, with its Victorian trim, is an emblem of the community's growth as a summer resort area, which was made possible by the railroad. Passenger service ended on the line in 1970. The station was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 1, 1984. The station is currently home to the Greater New Milford chamber of commerce.
The land which today comprises Milford, Orange and West Haven was purchased on February 1, 1639 from Ansantawae, chief of the local Paugussets (an Algonquian tribe) by English settlers affiliated with the contemporary New Haven Colony. Originally, the area was known as "Wepawaug", after the small river which runs through the town, and which has given its name to several streets in both Milford and Orange.
A grist mill was first built over the Wepawaug River in 1640.
During the Revolutionary War the Milford section of the Boston Post Road, a vital route connecting Boston, New York and other major coastal cities, was blockaded by Continental forces, and Fort Trumbull was constructed to protect the town. The site of the blockade is commemorated by the Liberty Rock monument.
The Connecticut River is the longest river in the New England region of the United States. Flowing roughly southward for 406.12 miles (653.59km) through four U.S. states, the Connecticut rises at the U.S. border with Quebec, Canada, and discharges at Long Island Sound. Its watershed encompasses five U.S. states and one Canadian province – 11,260 square miles (29,200km2) – via 148 tributaries, 38 of which are major rivers. Discharging at 19,600 cubic feet (560m3) per second, the Connecticut produces 70% of Long Island Sound's freshwater.
The Connecticut River Valley is home to some of the northeastern United States' most productive farmland, as well as a metropolitan region of approximately 2 million people surrounding Springfield, Massachusetts, and the state of Connecticut's capital, Hartford.
Etymology
The word "Connecticut" is a French corruption of the Mohegan word quinetucket, which means "beside the long, tidal river". The word "Connecticut" came into existence during the early 1600s, describing the river, which was also called simply "The Great River".
