In journalism, jet set was a term for an international social group of wealthy people who travelled the world to participate in social activities unavailable to ordinary people. The term, which replaced café society, came from the lifestyle of travelling from one stylish or exotic place to another via jet plane.
Although jet passenger service in the 1950s was initially marketed primarily to the rich, its introduction eventually resulted in a substantial democratization of air travel. Hence though the term "jet set" is still in some use, its literal meaning of those who travel by jet is no longer relevant. It continues however to refer to those who have the independent wealth and time to travel frequently and widely for pleasure.
History
BOAC inaugurated the world's first commercial scheduled jet service on 2 May 1952, using the de Havilland Comet, followed by the introduction of the Comet 4 in 1958 after a series of accidents in 1953-1954. The first successful service, from October 1958, was the typical "jet set" route, London–New York City. Pan Am followed suit with the Boeing 707, making its first scheduled flight between New York City and Paris on 26 October 1958.
Jet-Set is a Colombian-based fortnightly magazine profiling the glamorous, compelling and sometimes scandalous lives and happenings of Colombian and international celebrities, politicians, artists, and those of the elite and high-society, that is to say, those in the jet-set. The magazine heavily relies on engaging editorials and vivid photographs depicting the stylish fashions worn, the exciting events attended, and the extravagant home décor of the rich and famous to captivate their reader's imagination.
It was founded in 1998 as the tenth publication of Publicaciones Semana S.A. with Álvaro García Jiménez as its first editor-in-chief.
The six players in the studio compete against each other in the first two rounds, the winner of the second round facing off against last week's winner in the final, for their place on the round the world 'Jet Set' Tour.
Round One: In the Red
All six contestants start 'in the green'. Each contestant in turn is given a category. They then have to decide to either 'play' and answer the question or 'pass' and nominate another contestant to answer that question. A correct answer or pass leaves the player 'in the green' while an incorrect answer or an incorrect pass (i.e. the person passed to got the question correct) leads the player to be 'in the red'. Only one person can be 'in the red' at any one time, while a contestant 'in the red' gets passed over in play, although may be challenged with a 'pass'.
Each round last approximately sixty seconds. Whichever contestant is 'in the red' at the end of the time is eliminated from the competition. This is repeated until only two players remain.
Old Toronto is the retronym of the original city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from 1834 to 1998. It was first incorporated as a city in 1834, after being known as the Town of York, and became part of York County. In 1954, it became the administrative headquarters for Metropolitan Toronto. It expanded in size by annexation of surrounding municipalities, reaching its final boundaries in 1967. Finally, in 1998, it was amalgamated into the present-day "megacity" of Toronto.
Post-amalgamation, the area within the boundaries of the former city is variously referred to as the "former city of Toronto" or "Old Toronto". Historically, Old Toronto has referred to Toronto's boundaries before the Great Toronto Fire of 1904, when much of city's development was to the east of Yonge Street. The term "downtown core" is also sometimes used to refer to the district, which actually refers to the central business district of Toronto, which is located within the former city.
This station is the busiest transportation facility in Canada, serving over 250,000 passengers a day. This is partly due to its position at the centre of Canada's busiest inter-city rail service area, the "The Corridor", which stretches from Quebec City in the east to Windsor in the west. More than half of all Canadian intercity passengers travel by way of Union Station.
Intercity train services are provided at Union Station by Via Rail and Amtrak, while commuter rail services are operated by GO Transit. The station is also connected to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway and streetcar system via its namesake subway station. GO Transit's Union Station Bus Terminal, located across Bay Street from the station building, is connected via the trainshed. The Union Pearson Express train service to the airport operates from a separate UP Express Union Station located along the SkyWalk a short walk west of the main station building.
