The rise and fall of the Mongol Empire - Anne F. Broadbridge
Trace the rise and fall of the Mongol Empire which, under the leadership of Genghis Khan, became the largest contiguous land empire in history.

It was the largest contiguous land empire in history— stretching from Korea to Ukraine, and from Siberia to southern China. And was forged on the open plains. In the 12th century, the East Asian steppe was home to scattered groups of nomads who, by 1206, would be united under the innovative leadership of a man named Temujin. Anne F. Wait For It...The Mongols!: Crash Course World History #17
In which John Green teaches you, at long last, about the most exceptional bunch of empire-building nomads in the history of the world, the Mongols! How did the Mongols go from being a relatively small band of herders who occasionally engaged in some light hunting-gathering to being one of the most formidable fighting forces in the world? It turns out Genghis Khan was a pretty big part of it, but you probably already knew that. The more interesting questions might be, what kind of rulers were they, and what effect did their empire have on the world we know today? Find out, as John FINALLY teaches you about the Mongols.

In which John Green teaches you, at long last, about the most exceptional bunch of empire-building nomads in the history of the world, the Mongols! This episode of Ten Minute History (like a documentary, only shorter) covers the situation in the Eastern Steppe and the inter-tribal warfare there which saw the ascendancy of the Mongols. Led by Genghis Khan they waged a series of wars which over the course of decades saw the Mongol Empire become the largest contiguous empire in all of human history. Of course, the empire soon fell into civil war and from that came Khubilai Khan, whose policies earned him a reputation as a skilled and competent ruler.
Recommended Reading:
John Man - The Mongol Empire: Genghis Khan, His Heirs and the Founding of Modern China. This book is a fantastic detailed overview of the empire and the Yuan dynasty. Has a great chapter on the Mongol's legacy.
Morris Rossabi - The Mongols: A Very Short Introduction. I always recommend these books but that's because they're great. This one has some issues with its structure but for its price point it's phenomenal.

Genghis Khan embarks on the most horrifying revenge campaign in history after a burgeoning Persian empire attacks his caravans and emissaries. The Mongols showcase their famed mastery of warfare and their notorious penchant for massacre. Tales of silver poured into the eyes of enemies and pyramids of civilian bones color this episode in history.
*In describing the scene atop the walls of Otrar, Juvayni quotes from the Shahnama, an 11th-century Persian epic poem to fully illustrate the image of the approaching Mongol forces.

Wizards and Warriors starts a new animated alternative history documentary series focusing on the Mongol Invasion of Europe and asking What if the Mongols invaded Europe. In our scenario, Ogedei Khan doesn't die in 1241, which allows the Mongols to retain their unity and continue their incursions into Europe and Middle East. In 1245, the Mongols under the leadership of Batu Khan invade central Europe leading to the intense battles in medieval Bohemia. At the battle of Olomouc in 1246, the allied armies of the Holy Roman Empire attempted to stop the Mongol invasion. The defeat here didn't stop the Mongols who were now full of wrath. And although the Europeans were now preparing a Crusade, this wrath will bring them to Bohemia and the siege of Prague will make things even worse. At the same time, a group of Mongols led by Batu Khan moved south to attack Italy and sacked Rome. To the north the armies of Subotai and Kadan were invading Germany and moving towards France, leading to the battles of Lubeck and Fulda Gap against the alliance created by Emperor Wenceslaus and King of France Louis IX. The death of Louis and end of the mongol threat, allowed the king's brother Charles of Anjou to take the throne and attack Frederick II of Sicily. After receiving a mauling at the battle of Isonzo, Batu returned to the Hungarian Kingdom in summer 1249, and immediately unleashed his horsemen in a wave of reprisals, leading to the battles of Buda and Esztergom, and the eventual retreat of the Mongols from central Europe. We at Kings and Generals hope that you will enjoy this video!
