The Khitan people (Chinese:契丹; pinyin:Qìdān; Old Turkic: ;KITaYN), or Khitai, Kitan, or Kidan, were a nomadic people originally from Mongolia and Manchuria (or Northeast China) from the 4th century that spoke a language distantly related to the Mongolic languages. As the Liao dynasty, they dominated a vast area north of and including parts of China, but left few relics that have survived until today.
After the fall of the Liao dynasty in 1125 following the Jurchen invasion, many Khitans followed Yelu Dashi's group westward to establish the Qara Khitai or Western Liao dynasty in Central Asia, which lasted several decades before being consumed by the Mongol Empire in 1218.
Etymology
There is no consensus on the etymology of the name of Khitan. There are basically three speculations. Feng Jiasheng argues that it comes from the Yuwen chieftains' names. Zhao Zhenji thinks that the term originated from Xianbei and means "a place where Xianbei had resided". Japanese scholar Otagi Matsuo considers Khitan's original name is "Xidan", which means "the people who are similar to the Xi people" or "the people who inhabit among the Xi people".

🇲🇳 The Xianbei and Khitans: History of Mongolia
The Xianbei and Khitans were nomadic proto-Mongolic peoples that inhabited Mongolia, Manchuria, Northern China, and Central Asia in ancient and medieval times.
The Xianbei and Khitans were powerful nomadic warriors who wreaked havoc in Mongolia and Northern China following the collapse of the Han Dynasty. However, most of them lost their cultural integrity due to Sinicization. The Khitans, the last surviving branch of these proto-Mongols, built a nomadic empire that became a model for the related and much more successful Mongol Empire.

Khitan appears to have been related to the Mongolic languages; Juha Janhunen states, "The conception is gaining support that Khitan was a language in some respects radically different from the historically known Mongolic languages. If this view proves to be correct, Khitan is, indeed, best classified as a Para-Mongolic language."
Alexander Vovin (2017) argues that Khitan has several Koreanic loanwords. Since both of the Korean Goryeo dynasty and Khitan Liao dynasty claimed to be successors of Goguryeo, it is possible that the Koreanic words in Khitan were borrowed from the language of Goguryeo.

Among all the powers that ruled Mongolia over the centuries, the Khitan are unique. The first proto-mongols to truly conquer China, they blended a long nomadic history with the wealth and influence of a millennia old dynastic power to produce some of the finest craftsmanship the world has ever seen, and leave a deep mark on the historic record. Warring with all those who surrounded them, these fierce fighters would go on to father Genghis Khan, and indirectly bring the world to its knees.

A note about naming:
When researching this video, I tried to figure out how to pronounce Abaoji's name. The results were split between Ah-ba-oh-Ji and Ah-oh-bo-ji.
I went with the one that was easiest to pronounce.
During this time, a distinctive theme of jade-carving arose from the life of the Khitans, a nomadic people who, by occupying vast regions of present-day northern and northeastern China, coexisted with ...

Similar items, decorated with dragon, phoenix, and lion patterns, were found in the tomb — also located in Inner Mongolia — of a lady whom some researchers suggest was a sister of Abaoji, a member of the nomadic Khitan people.
The exhibits include 32 elegant porcelains from the Song Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), as well as coins inscribed with different scripts of the Khitan, Tangut, Mongol and Jurchen peoples ...
