PRONI | Castle and City: Dublin Castle in its Urban Context 1801-1923
The Ulster Society for Irish Historical Studies (USIHS) and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) welcome you to a talk by Dr Joe Curran.

The Ulster Society for Irish Historical Studies (USIHS) and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) welcome you to a talk by Dr Joe Curran.
Much has been written about Dublin Castle as a centre of government and repression. Many excellent studies shed light on the politicians, administrators, and spies who were associated with ‘the Castle’. Less has been said about Dublin Castle as an urban institution, yet as a large complex of offices, ceremonial spaces, and military quarters the Castle could not fail to have an impact on the city in which it was located. Focusing on the years between 1801 and 1923, this paper discusses how exploring the relationship between the Castle and Dublin society, sheds new light on both. Dubliners often had something of a love-hate relationship with this multifaceted institution. Individuals who despised Castle administrators sometimes still competed for the contracts and grants that it provided to Dublin’s businesses and institutions. Dublin Castle could be chaotic and contradictory, but this produced opportunities as well as problems for many in the city.

What really caused the Irish Potato Famine - Stephanie Honchell Smith
Dig into what caused the Irish potato famine, and explore how the UK government’s response turned the crisis into a catastrophe.
--
For over 200 years, potatoes thrived in Ireland; roughly half the country’s residents lived almost entirely on potatoes. But when harvesting began in 1845, farmers found their potatoes blackened and shriveled. While this failed harvest created a crisis, the government’s response turned it into a national catastrophe. Stephanie Honchell Smith digs into Ireland's Great Famine.
Lesson by Stephanie Honchell Smith, directed by Denys Spolitak.

The Emerald Island was a place of conflict that developed throughout the centuries and perhaps lingers even today. By overcoming the difficulties that troubled the Emerald Island since the medieval ages, the proud Irish men and women forged a wealthy nation, turning Ireland into a role model for many European countries.
