History of The Ashanti Empire of Ghana
The Asante (also known as Ashanti) are part of the more prominent Akan people, a significant ethnic group in modern-day Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. "Asante" translates to "because of war" in the Twi language. It derives from two Twi words: "ɔsa," meaning "war," and "nti," meaning "because of." This name reflects the origins of the Asante kingdom, which was established to resist and combat the Denkyira kingdom.
The variant name "Ashanti" emerged from British reports, where the pronunciation of "Asante" was transcribed as "Ashanti," reflecting how the British heard and interpreted the word.

The Asantehene of the Ashanti Empire sits in state in Memphis
The biggest traditional Dubar ceremony in Memphis, meant to unify, honor ancestors and pray for the prosperity of the land and people.
The ceremony included an entrance parade for the king, song, and dance, and gift offerings on Beale Street today! The Asantehene sat in state. #memphis
"Otumfuo," in the Asante language, means "All-Powerful Majesty." "Asantehene" means "King of the Asante."
Those are the titles of the dignitary from West Africa who is in Memphis this week to represent his home nation of Ghana as the Memphis in May International Festival celebrates what it calls (perhaps redundantly) "International Week" — a time to contemplate the festival's "honored country" instead of barbecue and Megan Thee Stallion.

The royal couple took part in a spectacular traditional "Durbar" to celebrate the cultural ties with the Commonwealth.
Heir to the British throne, the Prince of Wales officially has no political entitlement.
But his African tour coupled with movements of the other members of the royal family are being closely monitored as the United Kingdom prep…

The Ashanti Empire in modern day Ghana, West Africa, were to prove one of the most tenacious enemies the British faced in 19th century Africa.
It would take, the ingenuity of one of 19th century Britain’s greatest generals to better them.
This is the story of General Sir Garnet Wolseley and the Third Anglo-Ashanti War of 1873-74.
In 1867, after an internal power struggle, 30-year old Kofi Karikari become king of the Ashanti.
He had no time for the British or the tribes they protected on the coast.
As far as he was concerned these were traditional vassal territories of the ancient Ashanti empire.
In 1873, he sent a 12,000 strong army across the border to prove who was really in charge.
Major General Garnet Wolseley was dispatched to secure British interests, protect the local tribes and bring the Ashanti to heel.
He brought with him a group of 35 hand-picked officers - his fabled Ashanti Ring.
Many would become generals, such as John McNeill, Henry Brackenbury, John Maurice, Redvers Buller, William Butler, Evelyn Wood and George Pomeroy Colley.
Wolseley planned his campaign meticulously to fit in to the 3 month dry season.
Royal Engineers cut a route through the jungle to the border 70 miles away. En-route they constructed 7 fortified bases, containing barracks,, storage sheds, hospitals, water purifying and even bakeries, butchers and post offices.
The engineers also constructed 237 bridges during this campaign.
There was enough quinine for every soldier to be take daily during the campaign.
Wolseley also did away with the British soldiers traditional red tunics, providing uniforms of light grey home spun material. Much cooler and practical for this environment.
Wolseley’s army consisting of British troops from the 42nd regiment (the Black Watch), the Welch Fusiliers, the Rifle brigade, as well as Royal Marines and sailors advanced in January 1874.
They were joined by the 1st and 2nd West Indian Regiments and two regiments of local African recruits.
On the 31st January, he defeated the Ashanti army at the Battle of of Amoaful and 4 days later entered their capital as Kumasi.
Seizing anything of value, the British then blew up the royal palace and set fire to the city.
The third Anglo-Ashanti war was over.
Wolseley’s victory in the Ashanti War had cost just 18 men killed in battle and a further 55 dead from disease.
He had managed a campaign through dense jungle and had got his army in and out during the 3 month dry season.
Wolseley returned to a heros welcome in Britain.
Sir Garnet Wolseley was feted in the press as “Our Only General”.
His meticulous organisation led to a popular slang phrase in Victorian Britain: “All Sir Garnet” which meant everything was okay or sorted.

From Hostage to Emperor: The Rise of Osei Tutu and the Asante Empire
Osei Tutu was no ordinary king. His journey from a young hostage in a rival kingdom to the powerful Asantehene and architect of the mighty Asante Empire is a story of resilience, cunning, and unwavering ambition. In this video, we delve into the fascinating life of Osei Tutu, exploring his pivotal role in shaping the destiny of a nation.
From Captive to Conqueror: Osei Tutu's Early Life
Our journey begins in the shadow of the Denkyira kingdom, where a young Osei Tutu is held captive. Far from being resigned to his fate, he uses his time to study his enemies, learn their strengths and weaknesses, and forge alliances with other discontented tribes. When the opportunity arises, Osei Tutu escapes back to his homeland, vowing to one day overthrow Denkyira's oppressive rule.
Building an Empire: Osei Tutu's Reforms and Conquests
Back in Akwamu, Osei Tutu sets about unifying the disparate Asante chiefdoms. He establishes a centralized government, strengthens the military, and fosters a shared Asante identity. His strategic brilliance shines through in his masterful use of diplomacy and warfare, as he expands Asante territory through a series of calculated conquests.
The Golden Stool: A Symbol of Asante Unity and Power
One of Osei Tutu's most enduring legacies is the creation of the Sika'wa, or Golden Stool. This sacred object becomes the embodiment of Asante sovereignty and spiritual authority, uniting the Asante people under a single banner. The Golden Stool remains a potent symbol of Asante identity even today.
A Legacy that Endures: The Asante Empire's Impact on Africa and Beyond
Osei Tutu's reign marks a turning point in West African history. The Asante Empire, under his leadership, becomes a major economic and political power, forging trade relations with Europeans and establishing itself as a formidable force. Even after Osei Tutu's passing, the Asante Empire continues to thrive for centuries, leaving an indelible mark on the region and inspiring future generations.
Join us on this captivating journey through Osei Tutu's life and times. Witness his transformation from a hostage to a legendary emperor, and discover the secrets behind the rise of the mighty Asante Empire.

Asante King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will attend the Memphis in May Festival for its salute to Ghana.
Since his "enstoolment" in 1999, the Asante king — who will celebrate his 72nd birthday Friday in Memphis — has occupied what is called "The Golden Stool." Symbolically represented in silhouette on Asante or Ashanti flag, the Golden Stool is a literal object, carved from wood and inlaid with gold, that represents "the royal and divine throne of kings of the Ashanti people and the ultimate symbol of power," according to the African American Registry, an online database that covers "African American heritage in the world."

I personally moved to Ghana from the diaspora about 4 years ago. In this video I share with you somethings I have lea...

My name is Jasmine and I have relocated from Sydney Australia to Ghana in west Africa as of the year 2020.
My parents are of Ghanaian descent although I was born in Australia. Here on my channel, my goal is to give you a real glimpse into what it’s like to live in Ghana and other parts of Africa, from the food, to the culture, to the lifestyle and everything in between. My goal is to satisfy your curiosity about Ghana and other African countries.
My prayer is that these videos do just that for several African’s in the diaspora.
Follow your bliss because life is short, follow your bliss because human life has no intrinsic value, follow your bliss because everything happens for the greater good and follow your bliss because it has all happened before.

LIVING IN GHANA IS HARD... THIS IS WHAT I HAVE LEARNED!
Ghana is one of the safest countries within Africa and so its no surprise a lot of people have shown keen interest in visiting Ghana or moving to Ghana. Fortunately, the country does not, or only rarely, experience the tensions that plague many other multiethnic nations in Africa; the different ethnicities have managed to remain in a state of relatively peaceful coexistence throughout the nation’s recent history. I personally moved to Ghana from the diaspora about 4 years ago. In this video I share with you somethings I have learned about living here in Ghana. I talk to you about whether its better to rent or live in Ghana? Health needs? Shopping in Ghana as well as the best way to make the most out of your travels to Ghana.

00:00 Ghana, a small country in West Africa, is the world's second largest cocoa producer. It's the end of the season. By motorbike or on foot, Jeff and his companions transport the precious commodity through the bush and try to reach the city to sell the fruit of their harvest.
6:16 They harvest Coca but have never seen or eaten chocolate
9:13 Ever wondered how chocolate was made ?
30:11 White Gold is an important part of the economy
38:35 Times are hard, even at the border control
In the center of the country, Lake Volta is the largest artificial lake in the world. Several times a week, locals cross it to get to the market. But everything gets complicated when it comes to loading the cattle on the boats, and having passengers and animals live together? Ghana is also renowned for its funeral rites, and its very special kind of coffins. These must represent the profession exercised by the deceased during his life. Along the roads, manufacturers compete in ingenuity: the coffins take the form of multicolored fish, sewing machines, Bibles, or even bush taxis? Funerals are not easy. They sometimes take on the appearance of carnivals. The dead live there again?

Dismantle the Commonwealth: Queen Elizabeth's Death Prompts Reckoning with Colonial Past in Africa
The death of Queen Elizabeth II has focused global attention on the British royal family and renewed criticism of the monarchy both inside the U.K. and abroad, especially among peoples colonized by Britain. "There's a degree of psychosis that you can go to another people's land, colonize them, and then expect them to honor you at the same time," says Kenyan American author Mukoma Wa Ngugi, who teaches literature at Cornell University and whose own family was deeply impacted by the bloody British suppression of the Mau Mau revolution. He says that with Queen Elizabeth's death, there needs to be a "dismantling" of the Commonwealth and a real reckoning with colonial abuses. We also speak with Harvard historian Caroline Elkins, a leading scholar of British colonialism, who says that while it's...

Member states of the Commonwealth of Nations
The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 53 independent and sovereign states (one of whose membership is currently suspended). Most are former British colonies or dependencies of these colonies.
No one government in the Commonwealth exercises power over the others as is the case in a political union. Rather, the relationship is one of an international organisation through which countries with diverse social, political, and economic backgrounds are regarded as equal in status and cooperate within a framework of common values and goals as outlined in the Singapore Declaration issued in 1971. Such common values and goals include the promotion of democracy, human rights, good governance, the rule of law, individual liberty, egalitarianism, free trade, multilateralism, and worl...

We also speak with Harvard historian Caroline Elkins, a leading scholar of British colonialism, who says that while it's unclear how much Queen Elizabeth personally knew about concentration camps, torture and other abuses in Kenya during her early reign, the monarchy must reckon with that legacy. "Serious crimes happened on the queen's imperial watch. In fact, her picture hung in every detention camp in Kenya as detainees were beaten in order to exact their loyalty to the British crown," says Elkins.

“Fiji acknowledges the principles and the values of the Commonwealth and the mutual bond we share with other member states.”
His Excellency, the President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote, while speaking at the 2020 Commonwealth Day celebration held at the State House today, said, “It is a bond that is cemented by our historical ties with Britain, and is the foundation upon which our diplomatic, aid and trade relations are built”.
“This year’s celebration is particularly significant as we reflect on 50 years as an independent nation state. The Commonwealth has journeyed with us and is an important part of our history.”
Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, cabinet ministers and members of the diplomatic corps were also part of the Commonwealth Day celebration.
President Konrote highlighted that at a time when multilateralism is under threat, the Commonwealth family must stand together and stay connected to meet these challenges.

SUMMARY
=======
Ghana was a dominion within the Commonwealth of Nations between 6 March 1957 and 1 July 1960, before it became the Republic of Ghana. It was the first western African country to achieve independence.
British rule ended in 1957, when the Ghana Independence Act 1957 transformed the British Crown Colony of the Gold Coast into the independent dominion of Ghana. The British monarch remained head of state, and Ghana shared its Sovereign with the other Commonwealth realms. The monarch's constitutional roles were mostly delegated to the Governor-General of Ghana. The following governors-general held office:
Charles Noble Arden-Clarke (6 March – 24 June 1957)
William Francis Hare, 5th Earl of Listowel (24 June 1957 – 1 July 1960)A referendum was held on 27 April 1960, with 88.47% percent of the voters favouring a republic, and 11.53% against. The republic was declared and the monarchy abolished on 1 July 1960.
Elizabeth II did not reside in or visit Ghana between 1957 and 1960, but she did visit:
1961 (9–20 November): as Head of the Commonwealth
1999 (7–9 November): as Head of the CommonwealthKwame Nkrumah held office as prime minister (and head of government). Following the abolition of the monarchy, Nkrumah won a presidential election and became the first President of Ghana.

Such common values and goals include the promotion of democracy, human rights, good governance, the rule of law, individual liberty, egalitarianism, free trade, multilateralism, and world peace which are carried out through multilateral projects and meetings which include the Commonwealth Games held once every four years.
