Commonwealth of Nations
The Commonwealth of Nations, or the Commonwealth (formerly the British Commonwealth), is an intergovernmental organisation of 53 member states that were mostly territories of the former British Empire. The Commonwealth operates by intergovernmental consensus of the member states, organised through the Commonwealth Secretariat and Non-governmental organisations, organised through the Commonwealth Foundation.
The Commonwealth dates back to the mid-20th century with the decolonisation of the British Empire through increased self-governance of its territories. It was formally constituted by the London Declaration in 1949, which established the member states as "free and equal". The symbol of this free association is Queen Elizabeth II who is the Head of the Commonwealth. The Queen is also the monarch of 16 members of the Commonwealth, known as Commonwealth realms. The other members of the Commonwealth have different persons as head of state: 32 members are republics and five members are monarchies with a different monarch.

The Commonwealth (Pittsburgh)
The Commonwealth was a weekly newspaper published in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1805 to 1818, before continuing as The Statesman until 1836. It was the city's third newspaper, and one of several in the ancestral lineage of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Origin
The Commonwealth was born out of dissension in the ranks of the Democratic-Republican Party in Pennsylvania. The conflict pitted a moderate "Constitutionalist" faction (called "Quids" by opponents), supporting Governor Thomas McKean, against the "Friends of the People," who favored radical legal and judicial reform and sought to defeat the governor's re-election. Ephraim Pentland, a 20-year-old journalist who had been employed at the Aurora in Philadelphia, established the Commonwealth to give voice in Pittsburgh to the radical cause in opposition to the Quid-oriented Tree of Liberty and the Federalist-leaning Gazette. The paper first appeared on 24 July 1805 as a four-column folio sold at $3 per year. It adopted the Pennsylvania state motto — "Virtue, Liberty and Independence" — as its own.

Ghana (
i/ˈɡɑːnə/), officially called the Republic of Ghana, is a sovereign unitary presidential constitutional democracy, located along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean, in the subregion of West Africa. Spanning a land mass of 238,535 km2, Ghana is bordered by the Ivory Coast in the west, Burkina Faso in the north, Togo in the east and the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean in the south. The word Ghana means "Warrior King" in Mande.
The territory of present-day Ghana has been inhabited for millennia, with the first permanent state dating back to the 11th century. Numerous kingdoms and empires emerged over the centuries, of which the most powerful was the Kingdom of Ashanti. Beginning in the 15th century, numerous European powers contested the area for trading rights, with the British ultimately establishing control of the coast by the late 19th century. Following over a century of native resistance, Ghana's current borders were established by the 1900s as the British Gold Coast. In 1957, it became the first sub-saharan African nation to declare independence from European colonisation.

Ghana was a Commonwealth realm between 6 March 1957 and 1 July 1960, before it became the Republic of Ghana. It was the first western African country to achieve independence.
British rule ended in 1957, when the Ghana Independence Act 1957 transformed the British Crown Colony of the Gold Coast into the independent sovereign Commonwealth realm of Ghana. The British monarch remained head of state, and Ghana shared its Sovereign with the other Commonwealth realms. The monarch's constitutional roles were mostly delegated to the Governor-General of Ghana. The royal succession was governed by the English Act of Settlement of 1701. The following governors-general held office in Ghana during the commonwealth realm period:
A referendum was held on 27 April 1960, with 88.47% percent of the Ghanaian people voting in favour of a republic, 11.53% against. The republic was declared and the monarchy abolished on 1 July 1960.

LIVING IN GHANA IS HARD... THIS IS WHAT I HAVE LEARNED!
Ghana is one of the safest countries within Africa and so its no surprise a lot of people have shown keen interest in visiting Ghana or moving to Ghana. Fortunately, the country does not, or only rarely, experience the tensions that plague many other multiethnic nations in Africa; the different ethnicities have managed to remain in a state of relatively peaceful coexistence throughout the nation’s recent history. I personally moved to Ghana from the diaspora about 4 years ago. In this video I share with you somethings I have learned about living here in Ghana. I talk to you about whether its better to rent or live in Ghana? Health needs? Shopping in Ghana as well as the best way to make the most out of your travels to Ghana.

Commonwealth, also called Commonwealth of Nations, formerly (1931–49) British Commonwealth of Nations, a free association of sovereign states comprising the United Kingdom and a number of its former dependencies who have chosen to maintain ties of friendship and practical cooperation and who acknowledge the British monarch as symbolic head of their association. In 1965 the Commonwealth Secretariat was established in London to organize and coordinate Commonwealth activities.
Historically, the Commonwealth was an evolutionary outgrowth of the British Empire. By 1931 they were recognized as having special status within the empire by the Statute of Westminster, which referred specifically to a “British Commonwealth of Nations.” The rapid growth of nationalism in other parts of the empire from the 1920s produced a long series of grants of independence, beginning with that to India in 1947, and required a redefinition of the Commonwealth. In 1947 India and Pakistan became members of the Commonwealth, the first with chiefly non-European populations. In 1948 Burma (Myanmar) became independent and rejected membership. In 1949 India announced its intention to become a republic, which would have required its withdrawal from the Commonwealth under the existing rules, but at a meeting of Commonwealth heads of government in London in April 1949 it was agreed that India could continue its membership if it accepted the British crown as only “the symbol of the free association” of Commonwealth members. That declaration was the first to drop the adjective British, and thereafter the official name of the organization became the Commonwealth of Nations, or simply the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth was also beset by other difficulties, some members opting to withdraw from the organization, as did Ireland (1949), South Africa (1961), and Pakistan (1972), though both South Africa and Pakistan eventually rejoined (the former in 1994 and the latter in 1989). Commonwealth membership grew dramatically in the second half of the 20th century as former dependencies attained sovereignty. Most of the dependent states granted independence chose Commonwealth membership, and the organization has even grown to include Mozambique (joined 1995), which was the first country granted entry that was never part of the British Empire or under the control of any member.

What the hell is the Commonwealth? In my broad strokes explanation of the commonwealth realms, a lot of people had questions about the Commonwealth in general, which makes sense, since I tried to fit centuries of geopolitical history in about a minute (sorry).
A commonwealth (little “c”) is just a grouping of like-minded anything really… Puerto Rico’s official title is a commonwealth, so are Massachusetts, Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. It was sometimes preferred over other terms like state to emphasize that these places are a free and independent group for their greater good (or “common wealth”). It was a trendy thing to emphasize when breaking free from the very not-free and independent British Empire.
The Commonwealth (big “C”) of Nations is a specific association of 56 countries, almost all of which have historical ties to the British Empire. That’s what most people mean when they just say “the Commonwealth.” It’s a voluntary union of independent nations that cooperate and support each other in common goals, like development, democracy, and peace. It started in 1926 when Britain formerly agreed to give equal status to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada (along with New Foundland but that’s now a part of Canada). These places were formerly considered Dominions of the British Empire, which is like a step up from colonies, but after 1926 they were considered equal to Britain and each other, “though united by the common allegiance to the Crown.” Essentially, after ditching official ties, they formed a union to cooperate and support each other, and they called it the Commonwealth of Nations. From then to now, more than 50 countries have gained independence from the former British Empire, and almost all of them join the Commonwealth soon after.
15 of these countries joined the Commonwealth and also have kept the monarch as their head of state – those are the realms explained in the last video. Those realms are independent nations, they just have a king, and it’s a British one.
Now, the Commonwealth actually includes more than just former British colonies and is open to all. It’s currently made up of 56 countries covering 2.5 billion people on 6 continents, ranging from giants like India to small islands like Nauru. So next time I see the Commonwealth Games on TV, I still won’t understand cricket, but at least I’ll know whos playing… 😊

Commonwealth of Nations
The Commonwealth of Nations, or the Commonwealth (formerly the British Commonwealth), is an intergovernmental organisation of 53 member states that were mostly territories of the former British Empire. The Commonwealth operates by intergovernmental consensus of the member states, organised through the Commonwealth Secretariat and Non-governmental organisations, organised through the Commonwealth Foundation.
The Commonwealth dates back to the mid-20th century with the decolonisation of the British Empire through increased self-governance of its territories. It was formally constituted by the London Declaration in 1949, which established the member states as "free and equal". The symbol of this free association is Queen Elizabeth II who is the Head of the Commonwealth. The Queen is also the monarch of 16 members of the Commonwealth, known as Commonwealth realms. The other members of the Commonwealth have different persons as head of state: 32 members are republics and five members are monarchies with a different monarch.

Ghana is one of the safest countries within Africa and so its no surprise a lot of people have shown keen interest in visiting Ghana or moving to Ghana. Fortunately, the country does not, or only rarely, experience the tensions that plague many other multiethnic nations in Africa; the different ethnicities have managed to remain in a state of relatively peaceful coexistence throughout the nation’s recent history. I personally moved to Ghana from the diaspora about 4 years ago. In this video I share with you somethings I have learned about living here in Ghana. I talk to you about whether its better to rent or live in Ghana? Health needs? Shopping in Ghana as well as the best way to make the most out of your travels to Ghana.
