The Hereford Mappa Mundi is a mappa mundi, of a form deriving from the T and O pattern, dating from ca. 1285. It is currently on display at Hereford Cathedral in Hereford, England. It is the largest medieval map known still to exist.
The Hereford Mappa Mundi hung, little regarded, for many years on a wall of a choir aisle in the cathedral. During the troubled times of the Interregnum the map had been laid beneath the floor of Bishop Audley's Chantry where it remained secreted for some time. In 1855 it was cleaned and repaired at the British Museum. During the Second World War, the mappa mundi and other valuable manuscripts from Hereford Cathedral Library were kept elsewhere in safety and returned to the collection in 1946.
In 1988, a financial crisis in the Diocese of Hereford caused the Dean and Chapter to propose selling the mappa mundi. After much controversy, large donations from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Paul Getty and members of the public kept the map in Hereford and allowed the construction of a new library to house the map and the chained libraries from the Cathedral and All Saints' Church. The new Library Building in the south east corner of the Cathedral Close opened in 1996.
A mappa mundi (Latin [ˈmappa ˈmʊndiː]; plural = mappae mundi) is any medieval Europeanmap of the world. Such maps range in size and complexity from simple schematic maps an inch or less across to elaborate wall maps, the largest of which was 11ft. (3.5 m.) in diameter. The term derives from the Medieval Latin words mappa (cloth or chart) and mundi (of the world).
Approximately 1,100 mappae mundi are known to have survived from the Middle Ages. Of these some 900 are found illustrating manuscripts and the remainder exist as stand-alone documents.
Types of mappae mundi
Extant mappae mundi come in several distinct varieties, including:
Zonal or Macrobian maps
Tripartite or "T-O" maps
Quadripartite maps (including the Beatus maps)
complex maps
Medieval world maps which share some characteristics of traditional mappae mundi but contain elements from other sources, including Portolan charts and Ptolemy's Geography are sometimes considered a fifth type, called "transitional mappae mundi".
The name "Hereford" is said to come from the Anglo-Saxon "here", an army or formation of soldiers, and the "ford", a place for crossing a river. If this is the origin it suggests that Hereford was a place where a body of armed men forded or crossed the Wye. The Welsh name for Hereford is Henffordd, meaning "old road", and probably refers to the Roman road and Roman settlement at nearby Stretton Sugwas.
An early town charter from 1189 granted by Richard I of England describes it as "Hereford in Wales". Hereford has been recognised as a city since time immemorial, with the status being reconfirmed as recently as October 2000.
Hereford (/ˈhɜːrfərd/HUR-furd) is a city in and county seat of Deaf Smith County, Texas, United States. The population was 15,370 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated locality named "Hereford" in the country.
Hereford's local water supply contains an unusually high level of naturally occurring fluorine. Because fluoride is used to protect against tooth decay, Hereford earned the title "The Town Without a Toothache".
It is also known as the "Beef Capital of the World" because of the large number of cattle fed in the area. The city is named for the Hereford breed. The local economy is affected significantly by growth in the dairy and ethanol industries.
The area is known for its semiarid climate with heavy farming and ranching throughout the area sustained by irrigation from the Ogallala Aquifer and the saltier Santa Rosa Aquifer beneath it.
Mundi is a town under Khandwa district in the Indianstate of Madhya Pradesh.
It is a thousand years old town. It is surrounded by significant forest area which belongs to Narmada River Valley.
It is 120km from Indore, the commercial capital of the state.
Demographics
As of 2012 India census, Mundi had a population of 30,000. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Mundi has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 52%. In Mundi, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.
The name of the city is derived from "Mundari" (meaning ring or circle shape). During the rise of Buddhism, the East Nimar region was included in the Avanti Kingdom under Chand Pradyota Mahesana, which was later added to the growing empire of Magadha by Shishunaga. From the early 2nd century BC to the late 15th century AD, the Nimar Region (earlier a part of Khandesh) was ruled by many emperors from many dynasties, which include Mauryas, Shungas, Satvahanas, Kardamakas, Abhiras, Vakatakas, Imperial Guptas, Kalchuris, Vardhanas (of Harsha Vardhana fame), Chalukyas, Kanungos, Rashtrakutas, Paramaras, Faruki etc. A Well is situated at ‘’’Koteshwer’’’ or ‘’’Loteshwer’’’, created by Pandhawas. ‘’’Renuka Dham’’’ is another ancient temple. Since the mid-16th century to the early 18th century, the Nimar region, was under the rule of Aurangzeb, Bahadur Shah, Peshwas, Sindhia, Bawaniya, Holkar, Pawar, (Marathas), Pindaris etc. Later from early part of the mid-18th century, the management of the Nimar region came under the British.

Best Things to Do in Herefordshire, England | Black Hill, Hereford, Hay-on-Wye and Ludlow
Hey everyone! Earlier this year we spent one week in Herefordshire and the surrounding area for a big family get together. In this video we show you the best things to do in Herefordshire, England including Black Hill, Hereford, Hay-on-Wye and Ludlow. (And yes we know Hay-on-Wye and Ludlow aren't technically in Herefordshire but they are easily doable as a day trip from Hereford and are well worth a visit if you are in the area!)
Herefordshire is a county of England bordering South Wales and is full of rolling farmland, wooded hills and beautiful river valleys. We have a whole video planned for the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which is why it doesn't feature in this one! But as you will soon see you should definitely add it to your list of places to see in Herefordshire a...
