HMS Westminster was a W-classdestroyer of the Royal Navy. She was the first ship to bear the name. Launched in 1918, she served through two World Wars, and survived both to be sold for scrap in 1947.
Construction and commissioning
Westminster was ordered on 9 December 1916 from Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Greenock, Scotland with the 10th order of the 1916-17 Programme. She was laid down in April 1917, launched on 24 February 1918 and commissioned on 18 April 1918.
First World War and interwar period
HMS Westminster's first role was escorting battle cruisers in the North Sea. She was later an escort for the German High Sea Fleet on its way to Rosyth in November 1918 after the German surrender.
Less than one month after the war ended, Westminster was required to help evacuate the crew of cruiserCassandra when she struck a mine. Yet just one day later, in thick fog, Westminster herself collided with the V-class destroyerVerulam and needed extensive repair. Westminster then served in the Baltic and was damaged in action with Russian warships. She then served in the 6th Flotilla, Atlantic Fleet in 1921, before being reduced to the Reserve.
Since its design, the typeface has been strongly associated with computers—especially in the late 1960s and early-to-mid-1970s. It is used frequently to indicate computer involvement in television series, films, books, and comics.
Royal Navy Forced To Retire frigates HMS Argyll and HMS Westminster Due To Personnel Shortages
The U.K. Royal Navy is so short on sailors that it is reportedly having to decommission two Type 23 class frigates in order to staff its new class of frigates. Details on the Royal Navy's possible decision to decommission the Type 23, or Duke class, frigates HMS Argyll and Westminster. Commissioned in 1991 and 1994 respectively. The U.K. Ministry of Defense intended to build 13 Type 26 frigates, construction of which began in 2017, which will be larger and more capable than the in-service Type 23s.

HMS Westminster has returned to Portsmouth after six and a half months in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf.
The Type 23 frigate divided her time between conducting counter-piracy and counter narcotics patrols.
HMS Westminster comes home after operating from the Baltic to the North Atlantic and Western Approaches hunting submarines as the Towed Array Patrol (TAPS) ship.
The deployment also took in various trials, training and exercises, including working with the RAF’s new P8 Maritime Patrol Aircraft.

Exploring The Incredible Royal Tombs Of Westminster Abbey
In this video, historian Dan Snow joins Sir David Cannadine to explore the complex history of religious affiliation at Westminster Abbey, which has evolved from being a Catholic monastery to a Protestant cathedral, with monarchs buried at the site representing a range of beliefs. He also discusses the various tombs, statues, monuments, and effigies in the abbey, highlighting how the process of memorialization has changed over time, with physical burials now rare and reserved for the most notable figures. Cannadine also takes viewers on a tour of the tombs, noting the juxtaposition of Winston Churchill's tomb and the Unknown Warrior's monument, and discussing how modes of commemoration and celebration continue to evolve in the 21st century.
This episode was filmed before the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
