The route forms a major commuter route into London from Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and eastern Bedfordshire; ridership has grown rapidly over recent years. In 2009 rolling stock was transferred from other lines to allow additional services and longer trains to be run. By 2018 the line will be connected with the Thameslink route via a junction just south of the High Speed 1 bridge, north of Kings Cross, to allow through services to south of London.
Route
The network consists of all local and semi-fast services on these lines:
Great Northern? is the twelfth and final completed book of Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons series of children's books. It was published in 1947. In this book, the three families of major characters in the series, the Swallows (the Walker family), the Amazons (the Blackett sisters) and the Ds (the two Callums), are all reunited in a book for the first time since Pigeon Post. This book is set in the Outer Hebrides and the two familiar Ransome themes of sailing and ornithology come to the fore.
Sources
For this story, Ransome was inspired by an adult fan, Myles North, an avid birdwatcher who wrote a letter to Ransome which supplied a detailed outline of much of the basic plot. He also supplied the famous phrase "What's hit's history: what's missed's mystery".
Ransome also made a visit to Lewis in the Outer Hebrides for a fishing trip and to research the area as the setting for the book.
Plot summary
The Swallows, Amazons and Ds are all on a sailing cruise with Captain Flint in the Outer Hebrides. While the older members of the party clean the boat before returning her to the owner, the younger ones explore inland and a mysterious bird is seen nesting on an island in a loch. The question arises whether it is a great northern diver, which has never been known to nest in the British Isles, or a black-throated diver.
After recruiting drummer Davey Latter and bassist Ashley Dzerigian, Great Northern hung around Los Angeles while completing material for a debut album. Great Northern signed with the indie label Eenie Meenie Records in the summer of 2006 and began recording with producer Mathias Schneeberger. The band's debut album was completed after about 6 months of song writing,Trading Twilight For Daylight.
The album was recorded at the Donner & Blitzen studio in Arcadia, CA, together with producer/engineer Mathias Schneeberger, whose previous work experience includes Twilight Singers' Joseph Arthur. Having met Schneeberger through a mutual friend, they quickly grew fond of his contributions to the album.
The expressway runs in a north–south direction close to the northwestern coast of the peninsula, connecting several major towns including Alor Setar, Butterworth, Taiping, Ipoh and Rawang while also providing access to several rural villages on its path. The expressway runs parallel to the existing Federal Route 1; it is also concurrent to the expressway from Bukit Kayu Hitam to Jitra. The ticket system is used for toll collection between the Hutan Kampung and Sungai Dua toll plazas, and also from the Juru toll plaza up to Bukit Lanjan, where the toll collection system merges with that of the New Klang Valley Expressway. The section from Sungai Dua to Juru in the state of Penang is toll-free due to heavy usage by local commuters.
Russia wants to make the Northern Sea Route alternative to the Suez Canal
Russia wants to make the Northern Sea Route alternative to the Suez Canal. Russia is recommending its Northern Sea Route for intercontinental cargo shipping instead of the Suez Canal. But some challenges are awaiting this route. Ice coverage in the Arctic Ocean stands as the first trouble. Secondly, the US can create hindrance in the Bering Strait. Lastly, there might be an international reaction towards Russia’s attempt to shape the global maritime traffic.

Northern City Line: Great Northern Trains at Old Street
Today’s film is the first of two parts filmed at Old Street Station in the London Borough of Islington.
Old Street is served by both London Underground’s “Northern Line” as well as the “Northern City Line.”
This film features the Northern City Line platforms, where mainline railway trains from Great Northern are running. This line has once been part of London Underground (in fact it has been operated as a branch of the Northern Line). Today, Class 313 mainline trains run through the tight deep-bore tube tunnels.
This station is rather quiet, and I was filming during off-peak hours, so not many people were using it.
Enjoy!
Filmed on Friday, 9th of October, 2015.

Great Northern RDC 2350 - Helena, Montana to Butte, 1950's
1950's 8mm film taken by Dave Wilkie of a trip on Great Northern's only RDC (#2350) on its run from Helena to either Great Falls or Butte (I'm not sure which direction it was going - does anyone recognize the scenery?) - likely towards Butte - see comments below.
GN-2350 was later the PGE, then British Columbia Railway, BC-31 and after that the Portland and Western Railway ORRX-31.

First Leg of the Great Olympic Northern Route | Part 1 of 5
This is the first leg flying across the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula Mountains. We leave Paine field bound for Port Angeles in search of a stamp in our Fly Washington Passport. A little know and rarely seen Phenomenon, is the vapor spiraling off a moving propeller. The forward facing camera caught this on takeoff. The following stops before returning home will be Sekiu, Quillauyte and Forks.

NB. We forgot to add Denholme station as a tick, in the video, so that will count as station 323 on our list!
