The Thameslink Programme is a major £5.5billion scheme to extend the service to a further 100 stations and to greatly increase capacity on the central London section to accommodate more frequent and longer trains, scheduled for completion in 2018.
In January 2016 a proposal was put out for consultation that responsibility for some local London rail services, but not necessarily including Thameslink services, might be transferred from the Department for Transport to Transport for London, to create a London Suburban Metro.
Thameslink was a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by Govia that operated the Thameslink franchise from March 1997 until March 2006. The franchise was due to end on 31 March 2004, but on 13 February 2004 the Strategic Rail Authority awarded Govia a two-year extension.
From September 2004 until May 2005 Class 317s were hired from West Anglia Great Northern to operate Bedford to St Pancras services while the Thameslink line was severed for six months for the new St Pancras station to be built.
Depots
Thameslink's fleet was originally maintained at Selhurst Depot under sub-contract by Connex South Central/Southern. With the Thameslink line to be severed for six months, Bedford Cauldwell depot was built in 2004. It progressively took over all work from Selhurst.
Thameslink and Great Northern services were merged into one franchise in 2006 due to the Thameslink Programme. In 2012, it was announced that services of First Capital Connect, Southern (with Gatwick Express) and some Southeastern routes would be merged into a single franchise for the expanding Thameslink network. The Invitation to Tender was to have been issued in October 2012, with the successful bidder announced in Spring 2013 and TSGN originally due to start in September 2013. However, due to the collapse of the InterCity West Coast re-franchising process, all franchising competitions were frozen until January 2013. In January 2013 the government announced that it would extend the contract until March 2014, intending to negotiate with FirstGroup to operate the franchise on a management contract for up to two years.

Thameslink Services in the City of London
Today we are in Central London along the Thameslink line.
Thameslink operates a north-south railway network through London, connecting Luton and Gatwick Airports with major stations in London, such as St. Pancras International, Farringdon, Blackfriars, and London Bridge. The line is quite unusual, in that it actually crosses the city of London instead of terminating at one of the terminals.
The film begins at St. Pancras International station, where the Thameslink platforms only recently opened in 2007. We then move to Farringdon, where there is a direct interchange between Thameslink and the London Underground Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. The final part of the film shows City Thameslink station.
Enjoy!

Should Thameslink be on the Tube Map?
Thameslink services across London started in May 1988, and at that time the section between Kentish Town and Elephant & Castle appeared on the Tube Map.
But from 1999 onwards, it's never been shown ever again, and yet with 24tph (Trains per hour) now running in the core section in the middle of Zone 1 again, is it time that it appeared again ... on the map that isn't really a Tube Map, but a Map of TfL services ...

Driving The Thameslink Simulator
Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) asked me a few weeks ago if I'd like to come and try out their simulators at Hornsey Depot, to which I of course said "Yes!".
Stopping off at Essex Road along the way for a last look of the tiles, I got to have a go on an Electrostar 377 Classroom style simulator, before heading up to the Siemens Traincare Facility (also based at Hornsey Depot) to try out the Class 700 simulator. Thanks to GTR for inviting me, and to Tim for being my instructor.
