Laura Weinrib, “Freedom of Conscience and the Civil Liberties Path Not Taken”
Recent efforts by opponents of same-sex marriage and reproductive rights to reorient their agenda around religious freedom have sparked an explosion of scholarship on religious claims for exemption from generally applicable laws. Professor Weinrib will discuss an early antecedent of this strategy: the campaign by the National Civil Liberties Bureau, the organizational precursor of the ACLU, to secure exemptions from military service for conscientious objectors during the First World War. The conception of liberty of conscience that the ACLU’s founders advanced, which they linked to an “Anglo-Saxon tradition” of individual rights, clashed with Progressive understandings of democratic citizenship and failed to gain broad-based traction. Civil liberties advocates consequently reframed their w...

Freedom of Conscience #shorts
God and the universal principles He created must be at the center of human existence. True freedom is not doing whatever we like in the moment. It is the freedom to recognize and live by those principles through which true human value and dignity are realized.
That is why freedom of conscience is so important. It recognizes the conscience as the human faculty through which we discern the universal principles that govern our existence and distinguish right from wrong. All other freedoms, such as freedom of belief and expression, are an extension of the freedom to exercise one’s conscience.

FREEDOM OF CONSCIENCE IN A TIME OF GLOBAL (IN)SECURITY
Freedom of conscience is one of the foundations of a contemporary society. However, we have recently seen an increase in the erosion of the freedom of conscience through surveillance technology, religious discrimination, re-education camps and other constraints that inhibit religious and other freedoms. This has weakened the freedom of conscience as well as national and global security situation across the globe. Scientists and legal practitioners from different countries will soon gather in Vilnius to discuss freedom of conscience and related global security issues.

Civil liberties advocates consequently reframed their wartime work in terms that foregrounded democratic dissent rather than individual autonomy. By the Second World War, the new emphasis on expressive freedom had worked its way into American constitutional law. Even then, however, most Americans rejected a court-centered and constitutional right to exemption from generally applicable laws.
Laura Weinrib is Assistant Professor of Law and Herbert and Marjorie Fried Teaching Scholar at the University of Chicago Law School.

On 27th April International Scientific Conference with a title “Freedom of Conscience in a Time of Global (In)Security“ took place at Mykolas Romeris University (Lithuania). The speakers of this interdisciplinary conference discussed freedom of conscience contemporary issues. Particular states, laws and court judgments were taken into consideration in order to find out how freedom of conscience situation is changing and how it impacts on the national and global security situation.
In the Conference, freedom of conscience themes were discussed from literary, historical, religious, philosophical, legal perspectives. Besides, the speakers analyzed legal regulation and case law questions related to freedom of conscience. This Conference brought together experts from religious, political, philosophical, legal fields representing Indonesia, Spain, the US, the Kingdom of Jordan, the United Kingdom, Qatar, Poland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, France, Slovakia and the other countries.
International Conference was a one-day event which was held by the Law School of Mykolas Romeris University in collaboration with two Indonesian partners: Faculty of Law of Airlangga Universitas and the Faculty of Law of Indonesia Universitas. Conference was funded by the Research Council of Lithuania under the postdoctoral project agreement No. S-DP-22-61.
