Franz Liszt (1811–1886) was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor and teacher of the Romantic period. With a diverse body of work spanning more than six decades, he is considered to be one of the most prolific and influential composers of his era, and his piano works continue to be widely performed and recorded.
Liszt achieved success as a concert pianist from an early age, and gained further renown for his performances during tours of Europe in the 1830s and 1840s, developing a reputation for technical brilliance as well as physical attractiveness. In a phenomenon dubbed "Lisztomania", he rose to a degree of stardom and popularity among the public not experienced by the virtuosos who preceded him.
During this period and into his later life, Liszt was a friend, musical promoter and benefactor to many composers of his time. Liszt also coined the terms "transcription" and "paraphrase", and would perform arrangements of his contemporaries' music to popularise it. He left behind an extensive and diverse body of work that influenced his forward-looking contemporaries and anticipated 20th-century ideas and trends. Among Liszt's musical contributions were the concept of the symphonic poem, innovations in thematic transformation and Impressionism in music, and the invention of the masterclass as a method of teaching performance. In a radical departure from his earlier compositional styles, many of Liszt's later works also feature experiments in atonality, foreshadowing developments in 20th-century classical music. Today he is best known for his original piano works, such as the Hungarian Rhapsodies, Années de pèlerinage, Transcendental Études, "La campanella", and the Piano Sonata in B minor.

Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, pianist and teacher of the Romantic period. With a diverse body of work spanning more than six decades, he is considered to be one of the most prolific and influential composers of his era and remains one of the most popular composers in modern concert piano repertoire. Liszt first gained renown during the early nineteenth century for his virtuoso skill as a pianist. Regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time, he toured Europe during the 1830s and 1840s, often playing for charity. In these years, Liszt developed a reputation for his powerful performances as well as his physical attractiveness. In what has now been dubbed "Lisztomania", he rose to a degree of stardom and popularity among the public not experienced by the virtuosos who preceded him. Whereas earlier performers mostly served the upper class, Liszt attracted a more general audience. During this period and into his later life, Liszt was a friend, musical promoter and benefactor to many composers of his time, including Frédéric Chopin, Charles-Valentin Alkan, Richard Wagner, Hector Berlioz, Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, Camille Saint-Saëns, Edvard Grieg, Ole Bull, Joachim Raff, Mikhail Glinka, and Alexander Borodin. Liszt was one of the most prominent representatives of the New German School. He left behind an extensive and diverse body of work that influenced his forward-looking contemporaries and anticipated 20th-century ideas and trends. Among Liszt's musical contributions were the symphonic poem, developing thematic transformation as part of his experiments in musical form, and radical innovations in harmony. Liszt has also been regarded as a forefather of Impressionism in music, with his Années de pèlerinage, often regarded as his masterwork, featuring many impressionistic qualities. In a radical departure from his earlier compositional styles, many of Liszt's later works also feature experiments in atonality, foreshadowing the serialist movement of the 20th century.

01:01:10 Années de pèlerinage II, S. 161 - 1. Sposalizio.
Franz Liszt was a prominent Hungarian composer and virtuoso pianist born on October 22, 1811, in Raiding, Hungary. He displayed prodigious talent from a young age, beginning piano lessons with his father, Adam Liszt, a musician himself. By the age of nine, Liszt was performing publicly and soon moved to Vienna for further education under notable teachers like Carl Czerny and Antonio Salieri.
Liszt's early career was marked by extensive touring across Europe, where he gained fame for his extraordinary piano skills and charismatic performances, a phenomenon known as "Lisztomania." This period in the 1830s and 1840s saw him perform hundreds of concerts, earning him a reputation akin to a modern rock star. He was also instrumental in popularizing the works of other composers through his transcriptions and arrangements.
In the 1850s, Liszt settled in Weimar, where he composed many of his significant works, including symphonic poems and the Piano Sonata in B Minor. His later years were spent in a more contemplative manner, as he took minor orders in the Catholic Church and focused on teaching and composition, influencing many future musicians. Liszt passed away on July 31, 1886, in Bayreuth, Germany, leaving behind a rich legacy that includes over 700 compositions and innovations in piano technique and music education.

Liszt's Faust Symphony was composed between 1854-5, being inspired by Berlioz's "The Damnation of Faust". Originally written for small orchestra, it was revised and reorchestrated between 1857-61, also being added the final chorus mysticus. It was premiered in Weimar on September 5 of 1857 for the inauguration of the Goethe-Schiller Monument, performed by the Staatskapelle Weimar conducted by the composer. In 1880, Liszt added some ten bars to the second movement.
Having little to do with a traditional symphony of the period, Liszt does not attempt to tell the story of Goethe's drama. Instead, each movement is a musical portrayal of the main characters of the tragedy: Faust, Gretchen (or Marguerite) and Mephistopheles. The piece follows the logic of the then brand-new form of the symphonic poem, which Lizst had created in that decade. Liszt employs the use of thematic transformation, in which a basic theme is reprised throughout a musical work, but it undergoes constant transformations and disguises and is made to appear in several contrasting roles.
Goethe's Faust had a huge artistic impact when published, being considered as one of the masterpieces of German literature. Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Berlioz had written pieces related to the magnum opus one way or another. The first part narrates how Faust sells his soul to Mephistopheles to obtain youth, power and knowledge. Faust then seduces the innocent Gretchen, but in the process her mother is poisoned and her brother is killed in a duel against Faust. Gretchen discovers she is pregnant and drowns her illegitimate child, being convicted and executed for the murder. Only at the end of the second part, after travelling and experiencing what the world has to offer, Faust's soul is redeemed by the love of Gretchen.
The first movement describes Faust within a complex sonata structure; his eruditeness, passions, longings, struggles and ultimately his noble spirit. It begins with a slow theme with the twelve notes of the chromatic scale on muted violas and cello. It represents the mysterious studies of Faust and his strive for knowledge. This is promptly succeeded by a second theme on oboe, which represents Faust’s emotions and yearnings. A third theme then unleashes with great violence and agitation, depicting Faust's insatiable appetite for the pleasures of life. A fourth and expressive theme on woodwinds and cellos present Faust the romantic, yearning for love. A final fifth theme in form of a heroic fanfare represents Faust's determination as well as the noble spirit that remains within.
After this extensive exposition, a short but exhilarating development combines and transforms these materials before reaching a massive climax of overwhelming force. The ensuing diminuendo leads us to a condensed and varied recapitulation of the themes heard before. Faust's opening theme is subjected to a series of variations before being triumphally transformed. The rest of themes then follows, before the music rises in a soaring climax with the heroic fifth theme combined with the rest. After several explosive dissonances, the movement ends with cellos and basses recalling briefly the theme representing Faust's feelings.

Faust | Analyse | musstewissen Deutsch

Faust – A German Folktale (German: Faust – Eine deutsche Volkssage) is a 1926 silent film produced by Ufa, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Gösta Ekman as Faust, Emil Jannings as Mephisto, Camilla Horn as Gretchen/Marguerite, Frida Richard as her mother, Wilhelm Dieterle as her brother and Yvette Guilbert as Marthe Schwerdtlein, her aunt. Murnau's film draws on older traditions of the legendary tale of Faust as well as on Goethe's classic 1808 version. Ufa wanted Ludwig Berger to direct Faust, as Murnau was engaged with Variety; Murnau pressured the producer and, backed by Jannings, eventually persuaded Erich Pommer to let him direct the film.
Faust was Murnau's last German film, and directly afterward he moved to the US under contract to William Fox to direct Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927); when the film premiered in the Ufa-Palast am Zoo in Berlin, Murnau was already shooting in Hollywood. It has been praised for its special effects and is regarded as an example of German Expressionist film.
PLOT
The demon Mephisto has a bet with an Archangel that he can corrupt a righteous man's soul and destroy in him what is divine. If he succeeds, the Devil will win dominion over earth.
The Devil delivers a plague to the village where Faust, an elderly alchemist, lives. Though he prays to stop the death and starvation, nothing happens. Disheartened, Faust throws his alchemy books in the fire, and then the Bible too. One book opens, showing how to have power and glory by making a pact with the Devil. He goes to a crossroads as described in the book's procedure and conjures up the forces of evil. When Mephisto appears at the roadside, he induces Faust to make a trial, 24-hour bargain with the Devil. Faust will have Mephisto's service till the sand runs out in an hourglass, at which time the Devil will rescind the pact. At first, Faust uses his new power to help the people of the village, but they shun him when they find out that he cannot face a cross. They stone him and he takes shelter in his home.
Faust then makes a further deal with Mephisto, who gives Faust back his youth and offers him earthly pleasures and a kingdom, in return for his immortal soul. Mephisto tempts Faust with the vision of a beautiful woman. He then takes him to a wedding feast in Parma, to meet the subject of his vision, an Italian Duchess. Faust departs with her, leaving the Devil to kill her groom. Just as Faust is making love to her the sands run out. He is obliged to seal the deal permanently in order to continue his love-making; he is Mephisto's forever.
Faust soon grows weary of debauchery and yearns for "Home". Here Faust falls in love with an innocent girl, Gretchen, who is charmed into loving Faust by a golden chain left by the Devil.
Faust comes to Gretchen's room. The devil rouses the mother who sees them and drops dead from shock. The devil then incites her soldier brother, Valentin, to run home to catch her lover. Valentin and Faust fight a duel. The Devil intervenes and stabs Valentin in the back. He then goes around town shouting "murder". Faust and Mephisto flee on the back of a hellish steed.
Valentin condemns Faust for his murder and his sister as a harlot in his dying breath. She is put in the stocks and subjected to jeering. The girl has a child (by Faust) and ends up in the streets. In a blizzard she sees a vision of a warm cradle and lays her child down on the snow, where the child dies. Soldiers find her and she is sent to the stake as a murderess. Faust sees what is happening and demands Mephisto take him there. Faust arrives just as the fire has been started to burn his lover. Faust wishes he had never asked to have his youth back. Mephisto smashes the mirror with Faust's reflection and he loses his youth. He runs through the assembled mob towards Gretchen; and it is as an old man that Faust throws himself onto the fire to be with his beloved.
Gretchen recognizes Faust and sees him in her heart as a young man again as the fire consumes them together. Their spirits rise to the heavens. The angel reveals to Mephisto that he has lost the bet because Love has triumphed over all.
