Seventy CDs of a conductor with a reputation for not being terribly interesting was always going to be a hard sell, and so it proves. And yet, there's some first-rate work here, truly, and it's not where you might at first think it's most likely to be found. Check out the video as we try to uncover the real Kurt Masur.

"Egmont" by the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which Beethoven
wrote on the occasion of a production in 1810 commissioned by the Vienna
Burgtheater. The overture became very famous and is often performed
separately from the rest of this piece of music.
Kurt Masur was born in Lower Silesia in 1927 and was Gewandhaus‘ music
director in Leipzig from 1970 to 1996. During this time he gave more than 900
touring concerts with the Orchestra. In addition to his artistic work, he is best
remembered for his political involvement during the "peaceful revolution" in
Leipzig, where he used his position as music director of Gewandhaus to warn
against violence. Kurt Masur was subsequently music director of the New York
Philharmonic and chief conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra before
passing away in the USA in 2015.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major (K. 313) By Emmanuel Pahud soloist, Berliner Philharmoniker HD e Claudio Abbado Complete Full Concert
The Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major (K. 313) was written in 1778 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Commissioned by the Dutch flautist Ferdinand De Jean in 1777, Mozart was supposed to provide four flute quartets and three flute concerti, yet he only completed two of the three concerti: K. 313 being the first.[1] The Andante for Flute and Orchestra K. 315 may have been written as an alternative slow movement for this concerto.
The piece is scored for a standard set of orchestral strings, two oboes (which are replaced with two flutes in the Adagio movement), and two horns.[2]
The piece itself is divided into three movements:

During the late 18th century, compositions for string trio with a wind instrument were extremely popular in amateur circles; and in keeping with this highly fashionable trend, Mozart composed four quartets for flute and strings while on a tour of France and Germany with his mother. The 22-year-old composer had lately made the acquaintance of a solo flautist, Johann Baptist Wendling, who was in contact with a rich flute-playing patron. A handsome fee was offered for s...

A wonderful selection of the best flute concertos from the 18th and 19th centuries, this video showcases 7 composers who championed the flute, each in their own way, with refined and idiomatic music for the instrument. Vivaldi was active during the 1720s, an era of transition from the end-blown recorder to the more powerful and easily tuned side-blown transverse flute common today. From later in the 18th century we have the inventive and idiomatic flute music of Mozart. Joining Büchner in the 19th century is Swiss-born Du Puy who was active in Scandinavia.
Soloists of international calibre and renown perform with equally noteworthy ensembles in recordings spanning four decades: Ginevra Petrucci's renditions of Du Puy and Büchner with Milan's acclaimed Pomeriggi Musicali to timeless interpretations from Johannes Walter and the Staatskapelle Dresden (Mozart). Authentic performance is also represented in this bundle, with Mario Folena joining Vivaldi specialists Federico Guglielmo and L'Arte dell'Arco. Iceland's Nordic Affect period ensemble features Georgia Browne in flute music by Abel, who wrote his chamber works for his pioneering London subscription concerts.

I. Allegro maestoso
II. Adagio ma non troppo
III. Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto
The opening of the second movement is often known as resembling the famous theme from the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss, Jr., which was composed many years later.

A handsome fee was offered for some concertos and quartets – more than Mozart’s annual salary as a court musician back at home in Salzburg – and so he set to work, completing the first quartet, K385, on Christmas Day 1777.
The other works here may have been composed later – perhaps Mozart ran out of enthusiasm for the project – but they all count as examples of refined chamber music conceived for skilled amateur players and domestic consumption, While hardly as complex a showcase of Mozart’s compositional skills as the string quartets he dedicated to Haydn, all four quartets abounding in gentle wit and good humour, and written not as mini-concertos for flute and string trio but as chamber music for equal partners. Every now and then Mozart touches the sublime, as so often he could, such as the slow variation movement of K285b, which recalls the similar movement in the ‘Gran Partita’ wind serenade in its weightless gravity of expression.
This new recording of the quartets offers a substantial bonus, in the shape of the Oboe Quartet K370 arranged for the ensemble at hand. The performances are led by the Italian flautist Andrea Manco, who in 2003, at just 20 years old, became principal flute of the Teatro Regio orchestra in Turin under the directorship of Gianandrea Noseda.
Since then he has played principal flute for many fine orchestras in Europe and farther afield, and in 2014 he took a solo flute post at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He is joined here by a trio of equally experienced, Itallian-based string players. This album marks his debut on Brilliant Classics.
