Kurt Masur (18 July 1927 – 19 December 2015) was a German conductor. Called "one of the last old-style maestros", he directed many of the principal orchestras of his era. He had a long career as the Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus, and also served as music director of the New York Philharmonic.
Masur was born in Brieg, Lower Silesia, Germany (now Brzeg in Poland), and studied piano, composition and conducting in Leipzig, Saxony. Masur was married three times. His first marriage ended in divorce. He and his second wife, Irmgard, had a daughter, Carolin. Irmgard Masur died in 1972 in a car accident in which Masur was severely injured. His marriage to his third wife, the former Tomoko Sakurai, produced a son, Ken-David, a classical singer and conductor.
Masur died at the age of 88 in Greenwich, Connecticut, from complications of Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his third wife and their son, as well as his daughters Angelika and Carolin, his two other sons, Michael and Matthias, and nine grandchildren.
Allegro Non Troppo is a 1976 Italian animated film directed by Bruno Bozzetto. Featuring six pieces of classical music, the film is a parody of Walt Disney's Fantasia, two of its episodes being derived from the earlier film. The classical pieces are set to color animation, ranging from comedy to deep tragedy.
At the beginning, in between the animation, and at the end, there are black and white live-action sequences, displaying the fictional animator, orchestra, conductor and filmmaker, with many humorous scenes about the fictional production of the film. Some of these sections mix animation and live action.
The film was released in two versions, the first includes live action sequences in between the classical pieces. The second version of the film omits these, replacing them with animated plasticine letters spelling out the title of the next piece of music.
In music, an instruction of "allegro ma non troppo" means to play "fast, but not overly so". Without the "ma", it means Not So Fast!, an interjection meaning "slow down" or "think before you act".

Thanks to the claim “Peaceful Revolution”, initiated by Kurt Masur as one of six prominent citizens of Leipzig, everything proceeded peacefully. That evening, the Gewandhausorchester played under his baton Brahms’ Second Symphony at the St. Nicolas Church. The following regular "Monday Demonstrations", which came to be described as the “Peaceful Revolution”, became a major milestone...
Kurt Masur and the Gewandhaus Orchestra have an eventful history: The conductor played a key role in the mass demonstrations of the "peaceful revolution" that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the GDR. On October 9, 1989, more than 70,000 GDR citizens protested for more democracy and freedom – on the same evening, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, conducted by Kurt Masur, played a concert in Leipzig's St. Nicholas Church. Exactly 20 years later, the orchestra under the direction of the German conductor commemorates the historic event with an anniversary concert in the very same St. Nicholas Church. They will also play the overture to Egmont (op. 84) by Ludwig van Beethoven. It is the first part of a dramatic score to the drama "Egmont" by the German poet Johann Wolfgang vo...
A wonderful video of Kurt Masur conducting the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in Beethoven's Symphony no. 3, op. 55, while on tour in Moscow in 1972. Midway through the finale there's a skip in the file that I could not fix. I left in the teasing motion towards an encore at the end, which is how the video stopped.

Seventy CDs of a conductor with a reputation for not being terribly interesting was always going to be a hard sell, and so it proves. And yet, there's some first-rate work here, truly, and it's not where you might at first think it's most likely to be found. Check out the video as we try to uncover the real Kurt Masur.
