Diablo Range Revealed: The Coyote Valley Connection
Presented by
The Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority and Save Mount Diablo
This is the story of Coyote Valley, a critical linkage between the Diablo Range and the Santa Cruz Mountains, and Coyote Ridge. Take a tour of this spectacularly beautiful landscape with us and see why this place is such an incredibly important connection between the two mountain ranges.
Coyote Valley was once slated for a development the size of Mountain View, but today it is recognized as an essential wildlife corridor, and the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority is working with partners to restore wetlands at Laguna Seca and planning for wildlife bridges across Monterey Highway. Coyote Ridge harbors essential habitat for the endangered Bay checkerspot butterfly, and many serpentine-endemic wildflowers,...

California Condor Sighting in the Diablo Range
With its massive scale, its relative absence of development, and its status as a premier wildlife corridor for charismatic megafauna such as mountain lions and California condors, the Diablo Range presents an incredible opportunity for advancing the goals of the 30×30 initiative.
The giant Diablo Range, running some 200 miles north to south through Central California between Highway 101 and Highway 5, crosses twelve counties and covers 3.5 million acres—five times larger than Yosemite National Park.

Mount Diablo is one of California’s most important landmarks, part of a network of open spaces championed by Save Mount Diablo--which has helped expand preserved lands to over 120,000 acres and one of the Bay Area’s most significant conservation efforts. But it is also the namesake peak of the Diablo Range extending 150 miles south. Save Mount Diablo recently expanded its geographic area further south. Seth Adams, SMD’s Director of Land Programs will educate us about the mountain’s ongoing importance and why the Diablo Range is California’s Next Great Conservation Story, in a Zoom presentation including breathtaking images.
The 150-mile Diablo Range which extends from the Carquinez Strait to the oil fields of the southern San Joaquin Valley holds some of the largest remaining wild places in California. It is a rugged, remote, difficult realm, a biodiversity ark incised by the San Andreas Fault. It is a historic mixing place, where Central Valley Yokuts and coastal Ohlones traded and danced, where California’s ever-more-diverse future residents will seek escape and recreation. And it is nearly unparalleled in ecological significance.
The Diablo Range covers 5,400 square miles and has many peaks, some of which are taller than Mount Diablo. The tallest one is San Benito Mountain at 5,241 feet. Mount Diablo measures at 3,849 feet. 75% of the ecologically important area around Mount Diablo has been preserved, but in the full 150-mile range, only 24% of the landscape has any protection. Terra Incognita, the Spine of Central California, this presentation will explore the most rugged, plant-rich stretch of California you’ve never heard of. Save Mount Diablo hopes to educate the public and to help fill in this blank spot on the California conservation map.
About Seth Adams
Seth M. Adams is Land Conservation Director for Save Mount Diablo. In 1988 he was the East Bay organization’s first staff. During his 32 years Diablo area conservation has accelerated. Protected lands on and around Mt. Diablo have more than doubled, and protected lands in the East Bay have tripled. He focuses on advanced policy, land use and advocacy; government relations; acquisition projects; and educational and media programs. Among his accomplishments are participation in preservation of tens of thousands of acres of public parklands; creation and defense of Urban Limit Lines; aid in development of hundreds of millions of dollars of conservation funding; helping to create the East Contra Costa County Habitat Conservation Plan and the Concord Naval Weapons Station Reuse Plan; recreational trails such as the 30 mile Diablo Trail; and reintroduction of endangered peregrine falcons to Mt. Diablo. He has been involved in many political campaigns throughout Contra Costa County and the East Bay. He is working to popularize the 150-mile Diablo Range, California’s next big conservation story. He is a recipient of the John Muir Conservation Award; Bay Nature Institute’s Conservation Hero Award; of Greenbelt Alliance's Stars of the Greenbelt Award; and of Save Mount Diablo’s Mountain Saver Award, for lifetime achievement. An avid hiker and weight lifter, he is also an amateur historian. He lives in Martinez, California.

We're excited to announce that the premiere of our upcoming Diablo Range Revealed film is sold out! We're so thankful for the outpouring of support and interest for the film and our Diablo Range work.
We're excited to see our amazing supporters at the upcoming premiere, and for those who can't make it, the full film will premiere on our YouTube channel on March 27 at 5 PM. Stay tuned!
This film is the first full-length movie ever created about the mysterious, little-known 200-mile Diablo Range, California’s next great conservation story. It’s the culmination of three years of groundbreaking work exploring the range.
With the help of ranchers, naturalists, scientists, and land managers, "Fire, Drought, Rain, and Hope" explores life in California’s inland Coast Ranges after the huge fires of 2020.
It ventures into places off the beaten track for most Bay Area residents, yet deeply connected to places they already love, including
• Morgan Territory, where the fire hit closest to home—and rare plants bounced back by the millions on incinerated slopes.
• Corral Hollow, where a fifth-generation ranching family survived the fire and helped establish a new state-park unit.
• Ohlone Wilderness, where wildlife biologist Amanda Murphy studies rattlesnakes, Alameda whipsnakes, and whiptail lizards living in a vast open space on the urban edge.
• Máyyan ‘Ooyákma—Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve, where activist-ecologist Stuart Weiss and the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority have helped make the city of San Jose safer.
• Henry W. Coe State Park, where the fire made resource managers’ jobs easier in an expanse of wild country four times the size of Mount Diablo State Park.
• Pinnacles National Park and beyond, where author and conservation biologist Joseph Belli “babysits” condors as a volunteer for the National Park Service and teams up with soulmate Seth Adams of Save Mount Diablo to survey wildlife in the range.
• Del Puerto Canyon and Mount Hamilton, where experts in insects, eagles, and other wildlife cross the Diablo Range together on a soggy spring day in 2023.
The last part of the film, ”Hope: and Audacious Plans,” maps out Save Mount Diablo’s strategies for winning broader protection for the entire range in this era of climate change.

Mean, Median, Mode, and Range - How To Find It!
This central tendency statistics math video tutorial explains how to calculate the mean, median, mode, and range given a data set of odd numbers and even numbers. The average / arithmetic mean is the sum of all numbers divided by the number of terms in a sequence. The median is simply the middle number. In an even data set, the median is the midpoint or average of the two middle numbers. The mode is number with the highest frequency or the number that appears most often. The range is the difference between the highest number and the lowest number. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems.
