May 18, 1980 Mount St. Helens Eruption: Stories from USGS Scientists
USGS scientists C. Dan Miller, Don Mullineaux, Mike Doukas, Norm Banks, Don Swanson, and Richard Waitt talk about their experiences at Mount St. Helens, from tracking and analyzing the early signs of volcanic unrest in March 1980, to documenting the catastrophic eruption on May 18, 1980, and working to forecast eruptions during the subsequent dome building phase within the crater. The scientists speak frankly about the challenges of monitoring volcanoes and how the eruption motivated the USGS to better understand what had happened at Mount St. Helens, in order to anticipate and mitigate the consequences of future explosive eruptions. The interviews were recorded in December 2000.

Biscuit Basin Explosion
What just happened at Biscuit Basin in Yellowstone National Park? Kaboom! Visitors witnessed a towering plume of steam, rock and mud rise several hundred feet into the air. The brief July 23 event was a classic example of a hydrothermal explosion, not a volcanic eruption. And with all the hot water circulating in the subsurface of this active volcano, it’s no surprise that hydrothermal explosions are Yellowstone’s most common geologic hazard.
Yellowstone's hydrothermal (hot water) system is powered by a cooling magma reservoir several miles beneath the surface. Even though the presence of hot water near the surface is partially due to that magma, this explosion was not triggered by changes in the magmatic system, like magma interacting with groundwater to cause it to convert to steam.

USGS: Small aftershock hits New Jersey months after 4.8 earthquake | News 12
The United States Geological Survey says a 2.2-magnitude aftershock hit New Jersey at 1:44 a.m., July 31 in Califon, Hunterdon County. The aftershock is from the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that rattled the tristate area back in April. Storm Watch Team Meteorologist Mike Rizzo says this is the 200th aftershock since that initial earthquake. Roberto Masis Arce, a phD candidate in seismology at Rutgers, joined News 12 to provide more insight.

The U.S. Geological Survey is the science research agency for the U.S. Department of the Interior. We conduct research on the natural hazards that threaten lives and livelihoods around the country. We also monitor the water, energy, minerals and other natural resources we rely on; the health of our ecosystems and environment; and the impacts of climate and land-use change.
Rather, the event was rooted in the very shallow hydrothermal system, where transitions between liquid water and steam are common and can occur when silica (dissolved in the water) clogs hot water conduits, causing changes in pressure that may lead to explosions.
Mike Poland, scientist-in-charge of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, talks about this previously underappreciated hazard and how it recently gained a little more respect
