The States General originated in the 15th century as an assembly of all the provincial states of the Burgundian Netherlands. In 1579, during the Dutch Revolt, the States General split as the northern provinces openly rebelled against Philip II, and the northern States General replaced Philip II as the supreme authority of the Dutch Republic in 1581. The States General were replaced by the National Assembly after the Batavian Revolution of 1795, only to be restored in 1814, when the country had regained its sovereignty. The States General was divided into a Senate and a House of Representatives in 1815, with the establishment of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. After the constitutional amendment of 1848, members of the House of Representatives were directly elected, and the rights of the States General were vastly extended, practically establishing parliamentary democracy in the Netherlands.
"Netherlands" literally means "lower countries", influenced by its low land and flat geography, with only about 50% of its land exceeding one metre above sea level. Most of the areas below sea level are man-made. Since the late 16th century, large areas (polders) have been reclaimed from the sea and lakes, amounting to nearly 17% of the country's current land mass.
The Netherlands (Dutch:Nederland) is a country located in Western Europe.
Netherlands or Nederland may also refer to:
Geography
Kingdom of the Netherlands, a constitutional monarchy consisting of the constituent country the Netherlands (in Western Europe) and the constituent countries Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten in the Caribbean
The Low Countries sometimes referred to as the "nether lands", consisting of the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, portions of northern France and western Germany
The 1979 European election was the first direct election to the European Parliament to be held and hence the first time the Netherlands had voted. Four parties were able to win seats: the conservative liberal VVD, the progressive liberal D66, the Christian-democratic CDA and the social-democratic Labour Party. Five other nationally represented parties compete but are unable to win seats. 58.1% of the Dutch population turned out on election day.
European groups
MEPs period 1979-1984
Below is a complete list of members of the European Parliament for the period 1979-1984 as a result of this election.
1984-1989
Dutch political parties
The 1984 European election was the second European election to be held. In these elections both an alliance of leftwing CPN, PSP and PPR parties (Green Progressive Accord) and the orthodox Protestant SGP, GPV, RPF parties have formed a successful common lists, which win two respectively one seat. the progressive liberal D'66 loses its two seats and disappears from the parliament. 50.9% of the Dutch population turned out on election day.
The four parts of the Kingdom–Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the Netherlands–are constituent countries (landen in Dutch) and participate on a basis of equality as partners in the Kingdom. In practice, however, most of the Kingdom affairs are administered by the Netherlands – which comprises roughly 98% of the Kingdom's land area and population – on behalf of the entire Kingdom. Consequently, the countries of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten are dependent on the Netherlands for matters like foreign policy and defence, although they are autonomous to a certain degree with their own parliaments.
The vast majority in land area of the constituent country of the Netherlands (as well as the Kingdom) is located in Europe, with the exception of the Caribbean Netherlands: its three special municipalities (Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius) that are located in the Caribbean. The constituent countries of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten are located in the Caribbean as well.
Dutch wine (Dutch: Nederlandse wijn) is wine made in the Netherlands. Although a small producer of wine, the first mentioning of viniculture in what is now the Netherlands dates back to 968. However, modern production of wine was started only in the 1970s and is nowadays a strong growing branch of Dutch agriculture. Currently, the country has 180 commercial vineyards.

Few had reckoned on this scenario: another Gaddafi vying for power. Saif Al Islam Al Gaddafi is the second son of the Libyan dictator Muammar Al Gaddafi, who was killed in 2011. Now, Saif Al Islam Al Gaddafi is a candidate in Libya’s presidential elections.
Statements from relatives and political actors paint a portrait of an unpredictable and fiercely determined man. Saif Al Islam Al Gaddafi’s presidential bid is a major challenge for Libya. The second son of the Libyan dictator Muammar Al Gaddafi has been convicted several times in Libya and is being prosecuted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.
Saif Al Islam Al Gaddafi has had an unusual life: he grew up a clan that operated with a high degree of paranoia, suspecting conspiracies at work everwhere. Later, he led a playboy lifestyle in Europe, presenting himself to the world as a reformer. In the second phase of his life, which began with the Libyan revolution of 2011, he perpetuated the repressive style of his father’s regime. He was taken prisoner by anti-Gaddifi militias who made him stand trial -- but only allowed him to take part via videolink.
Everyone in Libya is talking about him, all kinds of rumors are doing the rounds, his life is under threat. People say he’s a crazy, sick mystic who’s absconded into the desert. What’s making him run for president, despite the death threats? Does he stand a chance of winning? What does he know about the secret machinations of his father’s regime? His eventful life mirrors the current chaos in Libya: a country divided, with one government in the east and another in the west, rival militias vying for power and foreign states influencing the conflict. With statements from relatives and political actors, the film paints a portrait of Saif Al Islam - an unpredictable and fiercely determined survivor who is trying to find his way.

What are the pros and cons of living in The Netherlands? It doesn't matter whether you're relocating for business, education, or just because you want a change of scenery; moving to a new nation may be stressful for a lot of people. Therefore, before to deciding to live in Holland, you have to take into consideration a variety of variables, including the cost of living, the community, the school system, the level of safety, the availability of employment, and the environment. According to the third rule of Newton, which states that "every act has an equal and opposing response," living in the Netherlands has both positive and negative aspects to it.
Consider all of the perks of living in the Netherlands, then make a final decision about making the move there.
PROS:
1. High Quality Education
The World Economic Forum places the Netherlands at the third spot on its list of countries with the highest levels of education. It is estimated that around 81% of persons between the ages of 25 and 64 have finished at least their upper secondary school, which is greater than the average for the OECD, which is 79%. If you are relocating with your children, you do not need to worry about their education since pupils continue to gain knowledge and the capacity to read and write, as well as research, mathematics, scientific, economic, and social skills. If you are relocating with your kids, you are already safe and secure. In addition, the school system in the Netherlands promotes you to grow in your chosen field of work.
2. Healthcare
Having health insurance is a legal requirement in the Netherlands, and residents are expected to comply. As a result of the relatively high cost of the compulsory monthly payment for health insurance, a great number of individuals are unsatisfied with it. However, this is a significant perk of living in the Netherlands as a Dutch citizen: you will never have to spend a significant amount of money out of pocket to obtain medical assistance. This is a government benefit. Some people get the impression that they are throwing their money away since they don't need medical attention too often. However, once they reach the point where they need medical attention, they will get it.
3. A Low Rate of Crime
The Netherlands was classified as the 21st safest nation in the world according to the World's Safest Country ranking for the year 2021. However, your safety is not completely assured no matter where you go since you run the risk of becoming a victim of small crimes such as pickpocketing. When travelling to a new country, safety is a valid worry for everyone, but it is particularly important for households with kids and women who are traveling alone. The Netherlands are a rather risk-free destination. However, you should stay away from places with a high crime rate and adopt the appropriate safety measures. Taking sensible measures, such as securing your home and vehicle behind you when you leave, installing a burglar alarm, and so on.
4. It’s Small and Easy to Get Around
Because the Netherlands is not a very huge country, getting around to its many cities is not difficult. There is an abundance of public transit options obtainable in every given location, including railroads, buses, trolleys, and metros.

The Dutch prime minister, Mark Rutte, disagreed with the US president, Donald Trump, in a White House photo-op on Monday.

The president referred to upcoming discussions between the US and the EU around trade deals and tried to joke that if the discussions failed it could be positive. Rutte quickly injected with a strong "No" and a smile.
Trump replied with a comment about the car industry, but Rutte followed up quickly with: "It's not positive. We have to work something out."

My main source of information for this video was the “The First Salute” by Barbara Tuchman. It is a great read. There are 100s of books written on the war from the American perspective but this book is told from mostly the European perspective including the Netherlands.
In the second video of our series about elections and democracy, we talk about the parliamentary elections and history of democracy in The Netherlands.
CGP's video: We mentioned the video of CGP Grey explaining the position of three Islands in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and more. You can find that great video here: https://youtu.be/eE_IUPInEuc

With Ciceroni we seek to be a guide to European culture and history. We make videos on little known subjects as well as more ubiquitous ones, ranging from current affairs like the European Union, to historic events like the Tulip Mania, and even mythological stories like those of the Greek Gods. In all these videos we strive to present the subjects in a objective manner and within their complex context.
