Edward Albee interview (2005)
Edward Albee exploded onto the theater scene at the end of the 1950s with plays that foreshadowed the turbulence of the decades to come. Adopted as an infant, he rebelled against his socially prominent adoptive family, and fled to Greenwich Village to pursue a literary career. His 1959 play The Zoo Story and 1960’s The Death of Bessie Smith won him an early reputation as a fearless observer of human alienation and the American scene.

It would not be far wrong to think THE ZOO STORY is the play the 29 year-old Edward Albee wrote instead of committing suicide. At 29 he had reached the end of his tether, for as an orphan adopted by a rich and famous family he had left this rich family and their homes for good and by mutual agreement at 20. He had been writing short stories, plays and poems since grade school but THE ZOO STORY was the first time that instinct, talent and opportunity all came together in a successful attempt to make his distinctive voice heard. At the time of the writing of THE ZOO STORY he had been scraping a living delivering Western Union Telegrams. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf provoked an unprecedented controversy in 1962 when the trustees of the Pulitzer Prize Committee overrode the judgment of their own drama jury to deny Albee the award, but Albee’s unblinking portrait of a tortured marriage has long since become an undisputed classic of world drama. The Pulitzer Committee soon honored Albee for another family drama, A Delicate Balance, in 1966, and awarded him a second prize for Seascape in 1975.
While the Broadway stage turned away from serious drama in the 1980s, Albee ignored the fads of the moment and maintained his own high standards. Three Tall Women enjoyed a sold-out New York run in 1994 and earned him his third Pulitzer. His 2002 success, The Goat or Who Is Sylvia?, once again demonstrated his unique gift for treating the most unusual and disturbing matter with clear-eyed humor and humanity. And more than 40 years after its premiere, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf was back on Broadway, as powerful as ever.

The humiliations of poverty and the marginalization of his gay life combined his acute observation, his upbringing as little ‘Richie Rich’, his precise use of language and his searing wit together into a cri de coeur of a play.
The setting is Central Park, New York City in the late 1950’s—a different century, a different universe. It was a time and place when two white male strangers could conceivably meet, fall into conversation—even argument— safely without a thought of criminal intent. The play though still resonates powerfully as a protest against the coldness, materialism, and lovelessness of contemporary American life.

Edward Albee's The Zoo Story
Inspired by Edward Albee's appearance at Bucknell University in the Spring of 2011 as the Janet Weis Fellow in Contemporary Letters, Diego Chiri'12 directs Albee's 1958 play "The Zoo Story." In this, Albee's first play, two strangers meet on a summer afternoon in Central Park, New York City. Peter is a married man who works for a small publishing house and Jerry is an isolated man who has just come back from the Zoo. This encounter challenges their perceptions of love, failure, and interpersonal connections as the mystery of what happened at the zoo develops into a shocking conclusion.

The Zoo Story is a one-act play by American playwright Edward Albee. His first play, it was written in 1958 and completed in just three weeks.[1] The play explores themes of isolation, loneliness, miscommunication as anathematization, social disparity and dehumanization in a materialistic world. Today, professional theatre companies can produce The Zoo Story either as a part of Edward Albee's at Home at the Zoo (originally titled Peter and Jerry), or as a standalone play. Its prequel, Homelife, written in 2004, however, can only be produced as a part of Edward Albee's at Home at the Zoo.

The Zoo Story by Edward Albee in Tamil
This one-act play concerns two characters, Peter and Jerry, who meet on a park bench in New York City's Central Park. Peter is a wealthy publishing executive with a wife, two daughters, two cats, and two parakeets. Jerry is an isolated and disheartened man, desperate to have a meaningful conversation with another human being. He intrudes on Peter’s peaceful state by interrogating him and forcing him to listen to stories about his life and the reason behind his visit to the zoo. The action is linear, unfolding in front of the audience in “real time”. The elements of ironic humor and unrelenting dramatic suspense are brought to a climax when Jerry brings his victim down to his own savage level.

Playwright Terrence McNally, actress Mercedes Ruehl, and Jakob Holder, Executive Director of The Edward F. Albee Foundation, discuss the legacy of their friend, Edward Albee, one of the most important American playwrights of the modern era.
McNally and Albee met in 1960 after Albee's "The Zoo Story" had premiered Off-Broadway. They had a passionate relationship for five years which broke up dramatically, but their friendship mended over the years.
Ruehl starred on Broadway in 2002 in Edward Albee's "The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?" for which she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress. She also appeared in other productions of key Albee plays, including "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
Holder met Albee as a student playwright and was Albee's personal assistant during the playwright's later years before his death on September 16, 2016 at the age of 88.
The trio appears on our program as they prepare to participate in Broadway's tribute to Albee on December 6 at The August Wilson Theatre.
Taped: 10-28-16
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

George and Martha invite Nick and Honey to their home after a faculty party. What awaits their late-night guests is not a welcoming nightcap but tempestuous verbal sparring fueled by alcohol and 20 years of marital dysfunction. Filled with acerbic wit, Albee’s play is both wildly funny and heart-wrenching, exposing the fears and secrets of both couples as the lines between reality and illusion blur. Aaron Posner directs and Holly Twyford stars as Martha.
