Edward Albee
Edward Franklin Albee III (/ˈɔːlbiː/ AWL-bee; born March 12, 1928) is an American playwright known for works such as The Zoo Story (1958), The Sandbox (1959), and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962). His works are often considered as well-crafted, realistic examinations of the modern condition. His early works reflect a mastery and Americanization of the Theatre of the Absurd that found its peak in works by European playwrights such as Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco, and Jean Genet. Younger American playwrights, such as Paula Vogel, credit Albee's daring mix of theatricality and biting dialogue with helping to reinvent the post-war American theatre in the early 1960s. Albee continues to experiment in works such as The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? (2002).
Life and career
According to Magill's Survey of American Literature (2007), Edward Albee was born somewhere in Virginia (one popular belief is that he was born in Washington, D.C.). He was adopted two weeks later and taken to Larchmont, New York in Westchester County, where he grew up. Albee's adoptive father, Reed A. Albee, the wealthy son of vaudeville magnate Edward Franklin Albee II, owned several theaters. Here the young Edward first gained familiarity with the theatre. His adoptive mother, Reed's third wife, Frances (Cotter), tried to raise Albee to fit into their social circles. Albee attended the Clinton High School, then the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, from which he was expelled. He then was sent to Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania, where he was dismissed in less than a year. He enrolled at The Choate School (now Choate Rosemary Hall) in Wallingford, Connecticut, graduating in 1946. His formal education continued at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he was expelled in 1947 for skipping classes and refusing to attend compulsory chapel.

South Bank

The South Bank is an entertainment and commercial district of Central London, England, next to the River Thames opposite the City of Westminster. It forms a narrow, unequal strip of riverside land within the London Borough of Lambeth and the London Borough of Southwark where it joins Bankside. As with most central London districts its edges evolve and are informally defined however its central area is bounded by Westminster Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. Its name was adopted during the Festival of Britain over the local less attractive name of 'Lambeth Marsh'; it includes the County Hall, complex with the Sea Life London Aquarium, the London Dungeon, Jubilee Gardens and the London Eye, the Southbank Centre, Royal Festival Hall and National Theatre, among its long list of attractions. Both the County Hall and the Shell Centre contain major residential parts.
South Bank developed later than the north bank of the river due to its formerly often waterlogged condition in winter, and throughout its history has twice functioned as an entertainment district, interspersed by around a hundred years of wharfs, domestic industry and manufacturing being its main use. Restoration began in 1917 with the construction of County Hall at Lambeth replacing the Lion Brewery, its Coade stone symbol was retained and placed on a pedestal at Westminster Bridge and is known as the South Bank Lion. The pedestrianised embankment is The Queen's Walk which is part of the Albert Embankment built not only for public drainage but to raise the whole tract of land and prevent flooding.

Southbank, Victoria
Southbank is an inner urban neighbourhood of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1 km south of Melbourne's central business district. Its local government area are the Cities of Melbourne and Port Phillip. At the 2011 Census, Southbank had a population of 11,235. Its northernmost area is considered part of the Central Business District and Central Activities District of the City. Southbank is bordered to the north by the Yarra River, and to the east by St Kilda Road. Southbank's southern and western borders are bounded by Dorcas Street, Kings Way, the West Gate Freeway and Montague Street.
Southbank was formerly an industrial area and part of South Melbourne. It was transformed into a densely populated district of high rise apartment and office buildings beginning in the early 1990s, as part of an urban renewal program. With the exceptions of the cultural precinct along St Kilda Road, few buildings built before this time were spared by redevelopment.
Today, Southbank is dominated by high-rise development. It is one of the primary business centres in Greater Melbourne, being the headquarters of Foster's, Treasury Wine Estates, Crown Limited, Alumina, Incitec Pivot, The Herald and Weekly Times (including the Herald Sun), as well as regional offices of many major corporations, in a cluster of towers with over 340,000 square metres of office space in 2008. It is also one of the most densely populated areas of Melbourne, with a large cluster of apartment towers, including Australia's tallest tower measured to its highest floor, the Eureka Tower.

South Bank (PAT station)
South Bank is a station on the Overbrook branch of the Port Authority of Allegheny County's light rail network. It is located in the Brookline neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The station is a major transit facility, serving as not only a right rail stop but also along the South Busway, a bus rapid transit route. The station is also designed to serve the crowded and mostly residential community that surrounds the site.
History
South Bank was opened in 1977, as a stop on the then-new South Busway, which served as the final connection point to the Overbrook line before reaching South Hills Junction, since the streetcar line left the busway at this point and crossed Route 51. In 1993, the Overbrook line was suspended, and the stop became a bus-only stop. Rail service returned when the Overbrook line was rebuilt in 2004, and was the only stop on the once shared portion of the busway to return as a rail-busway connection point.

Edward Albee's The Zoo Story
Inspired by Edward Albee's appearance at Bucknell University in the Spring of 2011 as the Janet Weis Fellow in Contemporary Letters, Diego Chiri'12 directs Albee's 1958 play "The Zoo Story." In this, Albee's first play, two strangers meet on a summer afternoon in Central Park, New York City. Peter is a married man who works for a small publishing house and Jerry is an isolated man who has just come back from the Zoo. This encounter challenges their perceptions of love, failure, and interpersonal connections as the mystery of what happened at the zoo develops into a shocking conclusion. I don't own this play. In this, Albee's first play, two strangers meet on a summer afternoon in Central Park, New York City. Peter is a married man who works for a small publishing house and Jerry is an isolated man who has just come back from the Zoo. This encounter challenges their perceptions of love, failure, and interpersonal connections as the mystery of what happened at the zoo develops into a shocking conclusion.

Adopted as an infant, he rebelled against his socially prominent adoptive family, and fled to Greenwich Village to pursue a literary career. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf provoked an unprecedented controversy in 1962 when the trustees of the Pulitzer Prize Committee overrode the judgment of their own drama jury to deny Albee the award, but Albee’s unblinking portrait of a tortured marriage has long since become an undisputed classic of world drama. The Pulitzer Committee soon honored Albee for another family drama, A Delicate Balance, in 1966, and awarded him a second prize for Seascape in 1975.
While the Broadway stage turned away from serious drama in the 1980s, Albee ignored the fads of the moment and maintained his own high standards. Three Tall Women enjoyed a sold-out New York run in 1994 and earned him his third Pulitzer. His 2002 success, The Goat or Who Is Sylvia?, once again demonstrated his unique gift for treating the most unusual and disturbing matter with clear-eyed humor and humanity. And more than 40 years after its premiere, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf was back on Broadway, as powerful as ever.

It would not be far wrong to think THE ZOO STORY is the play the 29 year-old Edward Albee wrote instead of committing suicide. At 29 he had reached the end of his tether, for as an orphan adopted by a rich and famous family he had left this rich family and their homes for good and by mutual agreement at 20. He had been writing short stories, plays and poems since grade school but THE ZOO STORY was the first time that instinct, talent and opportunity all came together in a successful attempt to make his distinctive voice heard. At the time of the writing of THE ZOO STORY he had been scraping a living delivering Western Union Telegrams. The humiliations of poverty and the marginalization of his gay life combined his acute observation, his upbringing as little ‘Richie Rich’, his precise use of language and his searing wit together into a cri de coeur of a play.
The setting is Central Park, New York City in the late 1950’s—a different century, a different universe. It was a time and place when two white male strangers could conceivably meet, fall into conversation—even argument— safely without a thought of criminal intent. The play though still resonates powerfully as a protest against the coldness, materialism, and lovelessness of contemporary American life.

Inspired by Edward Albee's appearance at Bucknell University in the Spring of 2011 as the Janet Weis Fellow in Contemporary Letters, Diego Chiri'12 directs Albee's 1958 play "The Zoo Story." Edward Albee
Edward Franklin Albee III (/ˈɔːlbiː/ AWL-bee; born March 12, 1928) is an American playwright known for works such as The Zoo Story (1958), The Sandbox (1959), and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962). His works are often considered as well-crafted, realistic examinations of the modern condition. His early works reflect a mastery and Americanization of the Theatre of the Absurd that found its peak in works by European playwrights such as Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco, and Jean Genet. Younger American playwrights, such as Paula Vogel, credit Albee's daring mix of theatricality and biting dialogue with helping to reinvent the post-war American theatre in the early 1960s. Albee continues to experiment in works such as The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? (2002).
Life and career
According to Magill's Survey of American Literature (2007), Edward Albee was born somewhere in Virginia (one popular belief is that he was born in Washington, D.C.). He was adopted two weeks later and taken to Larchmont, New York in Westchester County, where he grew up. Albee's adoptive father, Reed A. Albee, the wealthy son of vaudeville magnate Edward Franklin Albee II, owned several theaters. Here the young Edward first gained familiarity with the theatre. His adoptive mother, Reed's third wife, Frances (Cotter), tried to raise Albee to fit into their social circles. Albee attended the Clinton High School, then the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, from which he was expelled. He then was sent to Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania, where he was dismissed in less than a year. He enrolled at The Choate School (now Choate Rosemary Hall) in Wallingford, Connecticut, graduating in 1946. His formal education continued at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he was expelled in 1947 for skipping classes and refusing to attend compulsory chapel.

In South Bank in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia emerged on the site of the 1988 World Fair, the South Bank Parklands. Located on the south bank of the Brisbane River, just across the city. The landscape consists of rainforest, water, grasslands and squares as well as a waterfront, Streets Beach, the Grand Arbor, the Courier Mail Piazza, the Nepal Peace Pagoda, the Wheel of Brisbane, many restaurants, shops and fountains. This is where an important cultural event and festival site was built in Brisbane with an estimated 11,000,000 visitors each year.
