August Wilson debates Robert Brustein on Diversity (1997)
A broadcast of the debate between playwright August Wilson and critic Robert Brustein over multiculturalism and the theater. The discussion is moderated by actress, playwright, and performance artist Anna Deavere Smith. Wilson, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and author of the well-known play "Fences" says the modern theater system jeopardizes the values of black actors because it is dominated by white society. Brustein, the American Repertory Theater's artistic director and the theater critic of "The New Republic," claims Wilson's ideas encourage black separatism. The debate was held at New York's Town Hall on January 27, and is a follow-up of the past year's growing discussion between the two men in theater magazines.

When asked to describe the work of legendary playwright August Wilson, actor James Earl Jones said,”…when he writes he leaves some blood on the page. You can’t get that stuff out of yourself without hurt. It’s not therapy; it’s more like revelation.” August Wilson was one of America’s most significant and successful playwrights. He undertook an ambitious playwriting project: to chronicle the central issues African Americans have faced by writing one play for each decade of the 20th century. Wilson’s work accurately portrays the black experience in America-addressing themes of struggle (violence, economic injustices, unemployment, poverty and neglect, racism, civil rights, unlawful imprisonment, the legacy of slavery) as well as themes of triumph (the strength of family ties and loyalties, the uniqueness of black culture and the fight to preserver and value it).
In this intimate conversation, August Wilson discusses his life, his influences, and his approach to working with others to bring his work to the stage (recorded in 2001 at C. D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge, VA).

It allows viewers to contemplate the infinite possibilities for staging Wilson's written language by exploring some possibilities of what that language sounds like and looks like on stage/screen. The conversations this new work of art allows cannot happen without it; the whole of this new work elicits an academic conversation that is otherwise impossible as it allows us to explore Wilson's words.
