In this history documentary we bring to life the insane scale of a Roman Army on the March! We begin with the basic marching rates for individual soldiers to establish a baseline for our analysis. We then calculate the true size of a Roman Army made up of four legions and its auxiliaries. These are then placed four men across and arranged end to end to calculate their maximum length of over 25 kilometers. However this is just part of the story.
We then cover the logistics of actually moving a force of this size from point A to point B. This is done by simulating a 24 hour cycle of a Roman army on the march. The result is a stunning 3D rendering in Unreal Engine 5 of what such a monstrously large force would have looked like. This hopefully gives you a better appreciation for the mechanics of ancient armies and how disasters such as the Battle of Teutoburg Forest could have unfolded.

In this episode we cover the organization of a Roman Legion from the soldier to the Contubernium, the Century, the Cohort, and the Legion. Along the way we not only include the troops and their officers but all the slaves, mules, support, staff, and gear which accompanied them. This makes for a much better understanding of the Roman army structure.
We then put these into context by looking at a Roman army camp, a Roman army on the march, and a Roman army in battle order. This gives the viewer a full 3D history of a legion like never before.

We continue our Live History series which seeks to use reenactment to bring the past to life. This was made possible thanks to the awesome team at Imperium Romanum: https://www.youtube.com/c/ImperiumRomanumYT
Additional clips were produced in collaboration with "Nova Polaris" and "Veteres Milites Sibiu"
In this history documentary we look at the topics of pay and promotion in the Roman army. This begins with a review of the early Roman Army of the Republic which was a militia based system with neither of these standarzied. However as the state expanded such systems would become necessary, especially with the transition to a fully professional army in the Roman Empire.
We then discuss pay in the Roman Army. This covers everything from their basic salary, to bonuses, and other forms of compensation. We then turn to an understanding of the organization of the Roman Army and how one might advance up the ranks of a legion from a recruit, to a centurion, and beyond.

The Roman army was absolutely essential for the Roman empire, not just in a military sense but much more than that; it was often the only representation of Roman authority abroad, of which the centurion was the most common representation. Therefore the job of centurion entailed much more than simply leading a unit of soldiers. Centurions were employed in many other ways. How? Find out in this video!

Byzantine Empire: Justinian and Theodora - From Swineherd to Emperor - Extra History - Part 1
📜 Byzantine Empire: Justinian and Theodora - Part 1- Extra History
Justinian arose from humble roots, the nephew of an illiterate pig farmer named Justin. Justin joined the army and rose to become leader of the palace guard, then took his nephew under his wing and made sure that he was well educated. When Emperor Anastasius died, Justin used his position (and his standing army inside Constantinople) to claim the crown for himself. His nephew guided the early years of his reign, helping Justin secure support both in the capitol and abroad. When Justin died, rule of the Byzantine Empire passed to the young Justinian, who had grand ambitions to restore its waning glory. It also freed him to marry Theodora, a famous actress who was far beneath his social station, and who would also rise from...

We look at how the Greek language slowly replaced the Latin, Hellenization of the empire and the region, tensions between Christianity and Hellenisation, Romanness and Hellenic nature, and nationalization of Hellenism, and how the Byzantines were able to reconcile all these different concepts.

The Byzantine Empire was founded during the chaotic third century. It was the time when revolts and civil wars were common, and Roman emperors merely lasted for a year.
Despite being one of the most captivating historical periods of all time, the Byzantine Empire is a lesser known one and it's rare to find a page-turning resource on the topic.

I also have a degree in classical civilization.
Additionally, the most august of thanks to our the members of our discord community who kindly assisted me with so much fantastic supplemental information for the scripting and revision process: Jonny, Catia, and Chehrazad. Thank you for reading my nonsense, providing more details to add to my nonsense, and making this the best nonsense it can be.

It also freed him to marry Theodora, a famous actress who was far beneath his social station, and who would also rise from her humble beginnings to become a revered empress.

On the outskirts of modern Istanbul, a line of ancient walls lies crumbling into the earth...
In this episode, we look at one of history’s most incredible stories of survival - the thousand-year epic of the Byzantine Empire. Find out how this civilization suffered the loss of its Western half, and continued the unbroken legacy of Rome right through the middle ages. Hear about how it formed a bridge between two continents, and two ages, and learn how the impregnable walls of Constantinople were finally brought crashing to the ground.
This episode we're joined by members of the St Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral Choir in London, and a number of musicians playing traditional Byzantine instruments.

Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of the Romans and the Eastern Roman Empire continues with a video in which we ask if the Byzantine Empire was the heir to the Ancient Greeks. We look at how the Greek language slowly replaced the Latin, Hellenization of the empire and the region, tensions between Christianity and Hellenisation, Romanness and Hellenic nature, and nationalization of Hellenism, and how the Byzantines were able to reconcile all these different concepts.
