Soft Machine are an English progressive rock band from Canterbury, named after the book The Soft Machine by William S. Burroughs. They were one of the central bands in the Canterbury scene, and helped pioneer the progressive rock genre. Though they achieved little commercial success, they are considered by AllMusic to be "one of the more influential bands of their era, and certainly one of the most influential underground ones."
History
Beginnings, psychedelic, jazz fusion (1966-1968, 1969-1971)
Soft Machine (billed as The Soft Machine up to 1969 or 1970) were formed in mid-1966 by Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Kevin Ayers (bass, guitar, vocals), Daevid Allen (guitar) and Mike Ratledge (organ) plus, for the first few gigs only, American guitarist Larry Nowlin. Allen, Wyatt and future bassist Hugh Hopper had first played together in the Daevid Allen Trio in 1963, occasionally accompanied by Ratledge. Wyatt, Ayers and Hopper had been founding members of The Wilde Flowers, later incarnations of which would include future members of another Canterbury band, Caravan.
Soft Machine is the fifth studio album by Teddybears, released on 12 September 2006 on Big Beat Recordings and Columbia Records. It is the first album the band released under the name "Teddybears", as they had previously been Teddybears STHLM. Excluding "Intro", "Riot Going On" is the only new song from the group. The rest are reproductions of tracks found on their previous albums Fresh and Rock 'n' Roll Highschool, with "Throw Your Hands Up" renamed "Are You Feelin' It?".
The Ealing comedies is an informal name for a series of comedy films produced by the London-based Ealing Studios during the period 1947 to 1957. Hue and Cry (1947) is generally considered to be the earliest of the cycle, and Barnacle Bill (1957) the last, although some sources list Davy (also 1957) as the final Ealing Comedy.
History
Relatively few comedy films were made at Ealing Studios until several years after World War II. The 1939 film Cheer Boys Cheer featuring the rivalry between two brewing companies, one big and modernist the other small and traditional, has been characterised as a prototype of later films. One of the few other films that can be seen as a direct precursor to the Ealing comedies is Saloon Bar (1940), in which the regulars of a public house join forces to clear the name of the barmaid's boyfriend who has been accused of murder. Other wartime comedies featuring actors such as Tommy Trinder, Will Hay and George Formby were generally in a broader music hall tradition and had little in common with the later Ealing comedy films. Ealing made no comedy films at all in 1945 and 1946.
Ealing Comedy is a British 2008 comedy film, written by Jon Croker and directed by Neville Raschid. It was premiered at the Ealing Empire on 18 March 2008.
Plot
A second generation British Asian accountant (Alfie Singh) wants to be a film producer. He has an idea for a film called Ealing Comedy, about an accountant turned film producer called Alfie Singh. Alfie will play himself and his real son, Paul, will play his son in the film. Unable to raise finance he decides to make the film himself. The film chronicles his life with his Irish wife and teenage son and his struggles to finance and make the film while keeping his family together.
Ealing is a major suburban district of west London, England and the administrative centre of the London Borough of Ealing. It is located 7.9 miles (12.7km) west of Charing Cross and around 12 miles (19.3km) from the City of London. It is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan. It was historically a rural village in the county of Middlesex and formed an ancient parish. Improvement in communications with London, culminating with the opening of the railway station in 1838, shifted the local economy to market garden supply and eventually to suburban development.
As part of the growth of London in the 20th century, Ealing significantly expanded and increased in population, becoming a municipal borough in 1901 and has formed part of Greater London since 1965. It now forms a significant commercial and retail centre with a developed night time economy. Ealing has the characteristics of both suburban and inner-city developments. Ealing's town centre is often colloquial with Ealing Broadway.
