Dartmoor and the fact that a great deal of it is undisturbed for much of the year is an encouragement to the wildlife.
The more common mammals include: Dartmoor ponies, rabbits, foxes, otters, badgers, grey squirrels, weasels, stoats, hares and deer. Rumours abound of large wild cats such as cougars roaming wild on the moor, but little evidence has been forthcoming and until anything more substantial is available these reports should be filed under the general heading of cryptozoology.
Herds of cattle and domestic sheep can be seen apparently roaming free on the moor. All are owned by farmers and let out to graze. Each is branded - the sheep with a coloured patch on its coat, unique to its owner. The livestock will naturally remain within the territory in which they are released, although walls and cattle grids (a pit in the road covered with metal bars - impassable to hoofed animals) provide an additional level of control.
Dartmoor has given its name to two breeds of sheep - Whiteface Dartmoor and Greyface Dartmoor - which are descended from breeds which have roamed on the moor since at least the 17th century. They are still to be found there, but are now vastly outnumbered by the Scottish Blackface. Less common breeds such as Exmoor Horn and Cheviot are also to be found on Dartmoor. The most common cattle are the Galloway and Aberdeen Angus.
Wildlife can be found in all ecosystems. Deserts, forests, rain forests, plains, grasslands, and other areas including the most developed urban sites, all have distinct forms of wildlife. While the term in popular culture usually refers to animals that are untouched by human factors, most scientists agree that much wildlife is affected by human activities.
Humans have historically tended to separate civilization from wildlife in a number of ways including the legal, social, and moral sense. Some animals, however, have adapted to suburban environments. This includes such animals as domesticated cats, dogs, mice, and gerbils. Some religions have often declared certain animals to be sacred, and in modern times concern for the natural environment has provoked activists to protest the exploitation of wildlife for human benefit or entertainment.
Wildlife is the second collaboration between Anthony Phillips and Joji Hirota. The album is culled from recordings made between 1994 and 2000 when Anthony and Joji collaborated on a number of soundtracks for wildlife television programmes in the British Survival series. In addition, Anthony also wrote and recorded the music for a programme in the BBC series Natural World.
Wildlife features selections from the music for the programmes Creatures of the Magic Water (tracks 1-6), Secrets of the Amazon (tracks 7-11), Jaguar: Eater of Souls (tracks 12-13), Serengeti Jigsaw (tracks 14-15), Web of the Spider Monkey (track 16), Dungeons & Dragons (tracks 17-22), Secrets of a Norfolk Wood (tracks 23-25), Bears of the Russian Front (tracks 26-30), Gremlins: Faces in the Forest (track 31), Jurassic Shark (tracks 32-38), and Midway - Island of Life (tracks 39-45).
All programmes represented come from the Survival series except "Midway - Island of Life" which comes from Natural World.
Wildlife is an album by American jazz musician Joe Morris, which was recorded in 2008 and released on the AUM Fidelity label. It was the debut recording by a new group featuring saxophonist Petr Cancura and drummer Luther Gray. Morris plays bass instead of guitar.
Reception
In his review for AllMusic, Phil Freeman states "There's a lot of Ayler in Cancura's tone; he's a powerful player with a strong sense of melody, always retaining an essential cohesion within his solos, even at their most fervid. Gray is all over the kit, guiding the other two men and maintaining a forceful momentum."
The All About Jazz review by Troy Collins says that "The trio embraces a wide range of spatial dynamics on this expansive set, with the majority of their probing explorations conjuring the bristling frenzy of New Thing era expressionism."
Dartmoor is an area of moorland in southern Devon, England. Protected by National Park status as Dartmoor National Park, it covers 954 square kilometres (368sqmi).
The granite which forms the uplands dates from the Carboniferous Period of geological history. The moorland is capped with many exposed granite hilltops known as tors, providing habitats for Dartmoor wildlife. The highest point is High Willhays, 621m (2,037ft) above sea level. The entire area is rich in antiquities and archaeology.
Parts of Dartmoor have been used as military firing ranges for over 200 years. The public are granted extensive land access rights on Dartmoor (including restricted access to the firing ranges) and it is a popular tourist destination.
Physical geography
Geology
Dartmoor includes the largest area of granite in Britain, with about 625 square kilometres (241sqmi) at the surface, though most of it is under superficial peat deposits. The granite (or more specifically adamellite) was intruded at depth as a pluton into the surrounding sedimentary rocks during the Carboniferous period, probably about 309 million years ago. It is generally accepted that the present surface is not far below the original top of the pluton; evidence for this includes partly digested shalexenoliths, contamination of the granite and the existence of two patches of altered sedimentary rock on top of the granite.
A considerable gravity anomaly is associated with the Dartmoor pluton as with other such plutons. Measurement of the anomaly has helped to determine the likely shape and extent of the rock mass at depth.
In 1805, Great Britain was at war with Napoleonic France; a conflict during which thousands of prisoners were taken and confined in prison "hulks" or derelict ships. This was considered unsafe, partially due to the proximity of the Royal Naval dockyard at Devonport (then called Plymouth Dock), and as living conditions were appalling in the extreme, a prisoner of war depot was planned in the remote isolation of Dartmoor. Construction started in 1806, taking three years to complete. In 1809 the first French prisoners arrived, and were joined by American POWs taken in the War of 1812. At one time the prison population numbered almost 6,000. Many prisoners died and were buried on the moor. Both French and American wars were concluded in 1815, and repatriations began. The prison then lay empty until 1850, when it was largely rebuilt and commissioned as a convict gaol. With the establishment of the prison farm in about 1852, all the prisoners' remains were exhumed and re-interred in two cemeteries behind the prison.
The Dartmoor pony is a horse breed that has lived in south western England for centuries and is used for a variety of disciplines. Because of the extreme weather conditions experienced on the moors, the Dartmoor is a particularly hardy breed with excellent stamina. Over the centuries it has been used as a working animal by local tin miners and quarry workers. It is kept in a semi-feral state on Dartmoor.
Despite this, numbers have declined from an estimated 25,800 in the 1930s to about 5,000 today. Only around 800 ponies were known to be grazing the moor in the spring of 2004.
Breed characteristics
The small head has large, wide-set eyes and alert ears. The body is strong, with a broad, deep rib cage, and of medium length. The legs are strong, long from body to knee and hock, but with short cannons with strong, dense bone, and a flat-fronted knee; the foreleg rises to a shoulder that is well-angled and with good freedom of movement, and the hindleg rises to a quarter that is well-muscled and rounded in appearance, rather than flat or sloping. The mane and tail should be full and flowing, and the pony's movement free and smooth. The Dartmoor pony has a kind temperament, the ponies being reliable, gentle and calm. Most Dartmoor ponies stand between 11.1 to 12.2hands (45 to 50inches, 114 to 127cm); a pony should stand at no more than 12.2hands under the breed standard, introduced in 1924. Recognised colours include bay, brown, black, grey, chestnut or roan.

Dartmoor's Hidden Forests - A Short Documentary in 4K
Dartmoor National Park in Devon is famous for its wide open moorland landscapes. Large areas of the park are completely uninhabited and moorland grasslands stretch as far as the eye can see. However, there is so much more to this National Park than open, treeless landscapes. The valleys and gorges in the south and east of the park host large areas of ancient woodlands, some of which are internationally important, as Dartmoor hosts 3 out of the 5 high altitude oak woodlands in the UK. This film is a short documentary focusing on five woodlands across Dartmoor and why they are so special.

We also look at the iconic and magnificent Dartmoor Ponies, an ancient breed that has inhabited Dartmoor National Park for over 4,000 years.
To note, some shots of the birds were filmed in southern England/areas surrounding Dartmoor National Park.
This short film celebrates ten years of the Dartmoor Biodiversity Action Plan. Enjoy aerial views of Dartmoor National Park as well as find out more about Dartmoor's rare wildlife. This film features southern damselflies and marsh fritillary butterflies.

This film was shot exclusively on a Sony A7iii during the spring, summer and autumn of 2021. I do not own any of the music in this film and the rights belong to the incredible musicians that created them.

Back on Dartmoor this week but the weather was not what I was expecting. Wind and rain. So I found some shelter in the woodland looking for some wildlife to photograph. But the conditions where just not that good or maybe I just need more patience.

Outdoors Inspiration, Outdoor Essentials - Shamus McCaffery, shares a shaggy dog story of big cats in the wild Dartmoor uplands. He recalls and reenacts the journey he took one night at Bellever Forest where he saw a large, black shape moving through the moorland. Accompanied by ever faithful canine companion, Petra the Dartmoor German Shepherd.
A secluded area of Dartmoor National Park, offering fantastic opportunities to spot the abundant bird population. Helped along by some kind hearted people that I had the pleasure of meeting, who take great pride in their small and private area of this magical location on one of Dartmoor's well known rivers by placing bird feeders fully stocked up all year around for them to enjoy!

Big cats have been spotted around the UK for decades. It is thought that a change in law in the 70's prohibiting having them as pets caused owners to release them into the wild.
Dartmoor, and in particular the outskirts of Plymouth has seen several sightings. Although the frequency of reported sightings has diminished, they still persist with footprints and attacks on wildlife.
Plymouth used to have a Zoo. When it closed 2 of the 5 big cats never made it to their destination prompting theories that the cats either escaped or we released into the surrounding countryside.
The owner of Dartmoor Zoo is said to have seen and heard big cats coming to visit the permitter of the zoo, seemingly attracted by the calls from the animals housed there. Thankfully, no human has been attcaked.
In this video, Steve talks through the possible origins of the cats and his and others sightings. He also makes attempts to film it in the wild.
Since making this video, further evidence has been unearthed and also fresh sightings. The hunt continues with Part 2 in production as we speak.
