The Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA) is a national park authority in England, legally responsible for Dartmoor in Devon. It came into existence in its present form in 1997, being preceded by a committee of Devon County Council (from 1951 to March 1974) and the Dartmoor National Park Committee from 1 April 1974.
History
Dartmoor, in the county of Devon, is 368 square miles (954km2) in area. It was designated as one of the National Parks of England and Wales by statute in 1951; it has over 34,000 people living in it, and some 2.2 million people visited it in 2011.
First incarnation
For the first 23 years of its existence, Dartmoor National Park was administered by a special committee of Devon County Council, the "Dartmoor Sub-Committee". During this time the major proposals dealt with by the committee included extensions of china clay workings and coniferous plantations (which did not take place); the erection of a television transmitting mast at North Hessary Tor in 1953 (passed by the casting vote of the chairman); and proposals to construct three reservoirs, of which the Avon Dam Reservoir (mid-1950s) and the Meldon Reservoir (1972) were built, but one planned for the Swincombe Valley was rejected, by Parliamentary Committee in 1970 "on the grounds of the technical unsuitability of the scheme, not because it was sited in a national park".
Dartmoor is an area of moorland in southern Devon, England. Protected by National Park status as Dartmoor National Park, it covers 954 square kilometres (368sqmi).
The granite which forms the uplands dates from the Carboniferous Period of geological history. The moorland is capped with many exposed granite hilltops known as tors, providing habitats for Dartmoor wildlife. The highest point is High Willhays, 621m (2,037ft) above sea level. The entire area is rich in antiquities and archaeology.
Parts of Dartmoor have been used as military firing ranges for over 200 years. The public are granted extensive land access rights on Dartmoor (including restricted access to the firing ranges) and it is a popular tourist destination.
Physical geography
Geology
Dartmoor includes the largest area of granite in Britain, with about 625 square kilometres (241sqmi) at the surface, though most of it is under superficial peat deposits. The granite (or more specifically adamellite) was intruded at depth as a pluton into the surrounding sedimentary rocks during the Carboniferous period, probably about 309 million years ago. It is generally accepted that the present surface is not far below the original top of the pluton; evidence for this includes partly digested shalexenoliths, contamination of the granite and the existence of two patches of altered sedimentary rock on top of the granite.
A considerable gravity anomaly is associated with the Dartmoor pluton as with other such plutons. Measurement of the anomaly has helped to determine the likely shape and extent of the rock mass at depth.
A national park authority is a special term used in the United Kingdom for the legal body in charge of a national park. The powers and duties of the authorities are all similar, but do vary somewhat depending on the country in which they are situated.
In 1805, Great Britain was at war with Napoleonic France; a conflict during which thousands of prisoners were taken and confined in prison "hulks" or derelict ships. This was considered unsafe, partially due to the proximity of the Royal Naval dockyard at Devonport (then called Plymouth Dock), and as living conditions were appalling in the extreme, a prisoner of war depot was planned in the remote isolation of Dartmoor. Construction started in 1806, taking three years to complete. In 1809 the first French prisoners arrived, and were joined by American POWs taken in the War of 1812. At one time the prison population numbered almost 6,000. Many prisoners died and were buried on the moor. Both French and American wars were concluded in 1815, and repatriations began. The prison then lay empty until 1850, when it was largely rebuilt and commissioned as a convict gaol. With the establishment of the prison farm in about 1852, all the prisoners' remains were exhumed and re-interred in two cemeteries behind the prison.
The Dartmoor pony is a horse breed that has lived in south western England for centuries and is used for a variety of disciplines. Because of the extreme weather conditions experienced on the moors, the Dartmoor is a particularly hardy breed with excellent stamina. Over the centuries it has been used as a working animal by local tin miners and quarry workers. It is kept in a semi-feral state on Dartmoor.
Despite this, numbers have declined from an estimated 25,800 in the 1930s to about 5,000 today. Only around 800 ponies were known to be grazing the moor in the spring of 2004.
Breed characteristics
The small head has large, wide-set eyes and alert ears. The body is strong, with a broad, deep rib cage, and of medium length. The legs are strong, long from body to knee and hock, but with short cannons with strong, dense bone, and a flat-fronted knee; the foreleg rises to a shoulder that is well-angled and with good freedom of movement, and the hindleg rises to a quarter that is well-muscled and rounded in appearance, rather than flat or sloping. The mane and tail should be full and flowing, and the pony's movement free and smooth. The Dartmoor pony has a kind temperament, the ponies being reliable, gentle and calm. Most Dartmoor ponies stand between 11.1 to 12.2hands (45 to 50inches, 114 to 127cm); a pony should stand at no more than 12.2hands under the breed standard, introduced in 1924. Recognised colours include bay, brown, black, grey, chestnut or roan.
Before the township was established the location was known as Woodford Inn.
The township was settled in the late 1850s, a Post Office opening on 1 April 1860.
Today
The main industry in the area is the processing of timber from the extensive pine plantations.

Dartmoor - A Two Day Hike and Wild Camp on Sheeps Tor. Ancient Bronze Age Monuments.
In this video, I am amongst the rugged beauty and ancient history of Dartmoor National Park. Setting off from Princetown and bathed in beautiful bright sunshine (rare for Dartmoor!), I thread my way across the moors and Tors visiting several impressive features and ancient bronze age monuments before arriving at my wild camp spot for the night on top of Sheets Tor.
After setting up camp and enjoying a hot dinner, I am rewarded with the most stunning sunset - a perfect end to a perfect day exploring one of my favourite areas in England.

Hidden Landscapes: Prehistoric Dartmoor
Dartmoor is best known for its wild and beautiful landscape, but it’s also amazingly rich in the relics of past inhabitants, especially from prehistory. But many of these archaeological remains are hidden in the landscape and difficult to spot.
Join expert Win Scutt as he explores three prehistoric sites on Dartmoor in English Heritage’s care – Grimspound, Merrivale Prehistoric Settlement and the Upper Plym Valley – and explains what they tell us about life on the moor thousands of years ago.

Dartmoor's Hidden Forests - A Short Documentary in 4K
Dartmoor National Park in Devon is famous for its wide open moorland landscapes. Large areas of the park are completely uninhabited and moorland grasslands stretch as far as the eye can see. However, there is so much more to this National Park than open, treeless landscapes. The valleys and gorges in the south and east of the park host large areas of ancient woodlands, some of which are internationally important, as Dartmoor hosts 3 out of the 5 high altitude oak woodlands in the UK. This film is a short documentary focusing on five woodlands across Dartmoor and why they are so special.

Thanks for watching.

This film was shot exclusively on a Sony A7iii during the spring, summer and autumn of 2021. I do not own any of the music in this film and the rights belong to the incredible musicians that created them.
This music in this film in order of appearance is as follows:
Someone Loves Us - Dario Marianelli
Creature, Pt.1 DjRUM
Lívstræðrir - John Lunn & Eivør
Healing Katniss - James Newton Howard
Relentless - Tony Anderson
Ólafur Arnalds - Saudade (When We Are Born)
Ether - We Are All Astronauts
