Like its predecessor in EMD's catalog, the SD35, the SD40 is a high-horsepower, six-motor freight locomotive.
In 1966, EMD updated its locomotive catalog with entirely new models, all powered by the new 645 diesel engine. These included six-axle models SD38, SDP40 and SD45, in addition to the SD40. All shared standardized components, including the frame, cab, generator, trucks, traction motors, and air brakes. The primary difference was the power output: SD38 = 2,000hp (1,490kW) from a non-turbocharged V16, SD40 = 3,000hp (2,240kW) from a turbocharged V16, and SD45 = 3,600hp (2,680kW) from a turbocharged V20.
Original Owners
856 examples of this locomotive model were built for American railroads, 330 were built for Canadian railroads, 72 were built for Mexican railroads, 6 were built for the Guinea-Boke Project, and 4 SD40Ms riding on 5ft3in (1,600mm) gauge trucks were exported to Brazil.
The EMD 567 is a line of large medium-speed diesel engines built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division. This engine, which succeeded Winton's 201A, was used in EMD's locomotives from 1938 until its replacement in 1966 by the EMD 645. It has a bore of 8.5in (216mm), a stroke of 10in (254mm) and a displacement of 567cuin (9.29L) per cylinder. Like the 201A, the EMD 645 and the EMD 710, the EMD 567 is a two-stroke cycle engine. It is a V engine with an angle of 45° between cylinder banks (the 201A was 60° between cylinder banks; 45° later proved to be significant when EMD subsequently adapted the road switcher concept for most of its locomotives, and which required the narrower (albeit taller) engine which 45° provides). The 710, 645, and 567 are the only two-stroke engines commonly used today in locomotives. Eugene W. Kettering, son of Charles F. Kettering, joined Winton Engine in 1930. He moved to Detroit in 1936, and was a central figure in the development of the 567 and the Detroit Diesel 6-71. He moved to EMD in 1938, became Chief Engineer at EMD in 1948, then Division Director in 1956 and subsequently Research Assistant to the General Manager in 1958 until his retirement in 1960.
The 645 series was an evolution of the earlier 567 series and a precursor to the later 710 series. First introduced in 1965, the EMD 645 series remained in production on a by-request basis long after it was replaced by the 710, and most 645 service parts are still in production. The EMD 645 engine series is currently supported by Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc., which purchased the assets of the Electro-Motive Division from General Motors in 2005.
In 1951, E. W. Kettering wrote a paper for the ASME entitled, History and Development of the 567 Series General Motors Locomotive Engine, which goes into great detail about the technical obstacles that were encountered during the development of the 567 engine. These same considerations apply to the 645 and 710, as these engines were a logical extension of the 567C, by applying a cylinder bore increase, 645, and a cylinder bore increase and a stroke increase, 710, to achieve a greater power output, without changing the external size of the engines, or their weight, thereby achieving significant improvements in horsepower per unit volume and horsepower per unit weight.
Rare is the eighth studio album by Britishrock band Asia, released in 2000. It is completely instrumental, and the only performers on this CD are John Payne and Geoff Downes. Tracks 1–16 were created for David Attenborough's nature film, "Salmon: Against the Tides", and 17–22 for an unreleased CD Rom video game.Rare is Asia's first studio album not titled with a word beginning and ending with the letter 'a'.
Rare is an international conservation organization whose stated mission is to help communities adopt sustainable behaviors toward their natural environment and resources. The organization uses social marketing and technical interventions to address threats like overfishing, deforestation and unsustainable agricultural practices. Rare’s work is founded on the belief that most of the threats faced by the environment are the result of human behavior, and that changing human behavior requires appealing to people using both rational and emotional arguments and removing any barriers that might prevent change.
History
Rare was founded on January 1, 1973 by David Hill. The organization was originally headquartered at the offices of the National Audubon Society in New York before joining the World Wildlife Fund in the 1980s. In 1987, Rare returned to being an independent entity.
Currently headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States, Rare also has offices in the Philippines, Indonesia, China, Brazil, Mozambique, Mexico and Micronesia. Rare has worked with communities and local partners in 56 countries to design and deliver its signature "Pride campaigns", which aim to change behaviors and promote scalable resource use solutions.
Coal (from the Old English term col, which has meant "mineral of fossilized carbon" since the 13th century) is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock usually occurring in rock strata in layers or veins called coal beds or coal seams. The harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rock because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. Coal is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen.
Throughout history, coal has been used as an energy resource, primarily burned for the production of electricity and/or heat, and is also used for industrial purposes, such as refining metals. A fossil fuel, coal forms when dead plant matter is converted into peat, which in turn is converted into lignite, then sub-bituminous coal, after that bituminous coal, and lastly anthracite. This involves biological and geological processes that take place over a long period. The United States Energy Information Administration estimates coal reserves at 7011948000000000000♠948×109short tons (860 Gt). One estimate for resources is 18,000 Gt.
Devastations are an indie rock band from Melbourne, Australia. The band was founded in 2002 by the three friends Tom Carlyon, Hugo Cran and Conrad Standish after the end of their former band Luxedo.
The band was signed to Beggars Banquet Records, has released three albums and has toured extensively in Europe, where two of the band members live. Their debut album was named by Rolling Stone Germany as the best debut of 2004.
The band was nominated for an Australian Music Prize for Coal in 2005 and again in 2007 for Yes, U. The album, Yes, U, was also nominated for an Age Newspaper EG Award for Best Album of 2007.

3 EMD 567's are SCREAMIN in 8th notch! Fighting the hill from Lake Superior. 4/17/1999
We are at mp6 on the North Shore Mining (ex-Reserve Mining) Railroad as we watch two SD28's, and a SD18 fight the grade from Lake Superior at Beaver Bay to the top of the grade near the tailings dump. The train has SD28 # 1235 & 1234 and SD18 1226 for power. All units are powered by EMD 567D1 16 cylinder prime movers. It has a string of side dump cars loaded with tailings from the mined ore, and a compressor car, with the cab control caboose bring up the rear. The crew avoids turning the power, and can run the train from the caboose on its return trip to Beaver bay.
SD28 info...
The SD28 is a rare bird. There where only six built for use in the USA, and built between June-September 1966. Four where built for Reserve Mining, and two for the Columbus & Greenville. There was also six built f...

Inside an F-Unit Engine Room Carbody (EMD 567)
We are along for the ride on Adirondack F10 #1502 inside the carbody as we roll north from McKeever, NY. The unit was originally a GM&O F3 and was rebuilt later in life to run commuter trains. It last ran on Metro North before coming to the Adirondack Railway to haul passengers both short and long distances. Enjoy the sound as we take a rare look inside at a working 567 diesel while rolling along. Notice the difference at the end when the engine room door is closed.
ENJOY!
