Propulsion Systems Used in Modern Naval Vessels
Propulsion systems selection is an important part of naval ship design. These systems have always had to satisfy speed and ship-service power requirements. Nowadays, increasing fuel costs are moving such decisions towards more fuel-efficient solutions. Unlike commercial ships, naval ships operate at a variety of speeds and electric loads, making fuel consumption optimization challenging. Propulsion System choices for modern Naval Vessels depends on some criteria:
Traditional criteria
• ship speed requirements
• shock capability
• noise reduction
• infrared signature
Additional criteria
• change in operation requirements
• greater range of speed
• added mission flexibility
• longer periods away from base with smaller crews
• cleaner emissions

5 Advanced Marine Propulsion Systems | Marine Technology
Marine propulsion is the mechanism or system used to generate thrust to move a ship or boat across water. While paddles and sails are still used on some smaller boats, most modern ships are propelled by mechanical systems consisting of an electric motor or engine turning a propeller, or less frequently, in pump-jets, an impeller.

An emerging global macro-trend in naval engineering over the last fifteen years has been a decisive migration to ‘more electric’ propulsion due to progressively increasing electrical load demand and a focus on affordability. All-electric and hybrid electro-mechanical arrangements are routinely demonstrating merit since 1990 in the Royal Navy Type 23 ASW frigate and subsequent modern frigate programs. These include the Royal Navy Type 26, German Navy F125, Spanish Navy F110, Italian and French Navies’ FREMM, Republic of Korea Navy FFX-II frigate and Finnish Navy SQ2020 frigate programs.
Types of Propulsion Systems:
Combined diesel or gas (CODOG)
Combined diesel and gas (CODAG)
CODLAD (COmbined Diesel-eLectric And Diesel)
Combined diesel-electric and gas (CODLAG)
Combined diesel and diesel (CODAD)
Combined gas or gas (COGOG)
Combined gas turbine and gas turbine (COGAG)

WISAMO is an innovation initiative from Michelin Group and develops an inflated, foldable and automated wing using wind propulsion as an hybrid solution to reduce fuel consumption and then greenhouse emissions like CO². The wing can be adapted to any kind of vessels, new ones or the ones already operating: Ro-Ro, bulk cargos, oil and gaz tankers, containers as well as sailing and yacht boats. Thanks to WISAMO, Michelin aims to contribute to maritime transport decarbonization.

▶ 2. X Series by Marine Jet Power (MJP)
From the leaders in mixed flow technology comes the next generation of waterjet propulsion. The X Series provides users with more power in a lighter unit that burns less fuel and extends range over comparable alternatives, thereby reducing cost of ownership.
Enhanced reversing bucket - The cast aluminum bucket has been designed for decreased stopping distance and increased maneuverability. With its new narrow design, center-to-center installation placement is minimized and the mechanical tie bar synchronizes steering with the helm pump.

▶ 3. Kongsberg Gruppen - A5 Series Waterjet
Taking more than three-years research and development, the new A5 Series improves upon the popular FF range of Kamewa waterjets by providing greater thrust from a waterjet with a more compact inboard footprint.
Geared towards smaller boats and craft up to 25m in length, the A5 series is manufactured from high-grade marine aluminium and available in seven sizes with power outputs between 100kW and 1230kW. The A5 will eventually replace the FF range and size 29 will be first to hit the market.
