Course (architecture)

A course is a continuous horizontal layer of similarly-sized building material one unit high, usually in a wall. The term is almost always used in conjunction with unit masonry such as brick, cut stone, or concrete masonry units ("concrete block").

Styles

Stretcher – The typical course style, masonry units are laid with their head (smallest surface) viewed from a side cross-section and the long, narrow sides forming the bulk of the visible course.

Header – Heads form the visible course and the long, narrow dimension viewed from a side cross-section. This is often used to interlock a double wall (two adjacent wythes).
Rowlock – The long narrow sides are top and bottom; the heads visible. Single course. Above lintels. Between string courses. Occasionally the topmost course.
Soldier – Used mainly for decorative purposes as its upright nature does not lend itself to the compressive strength of a masonry unit and tends towards inward or outward lean (where mortar is used) or stress in successive courses. The long, thin sides are visible; the heads are top and bottom.
Sailor (rare) – Decorative, upright, weak and heat-permeable: The long thin sides are viewed from a side-cross section; the heads are top and bottom.
Shiner (rare) – Decorative, weak and heat-permeable. Long thin sides are top and bottom; the heads are viewed from a side cross-section.

In sailing, a course is the lowermost sail on a mast.

This term is used predominantly in the plural to describe the lowest sails on a square rigged vessel, i.e., a ship's courses would be the foresail, mainsail, and, on the rare occasions in which one is shipped, mizzen.Gaff-rigged vessels may use the term (for the lowest sail rigged aft of each mast), but are more likely to refer simply to a mainsail, foresail, etc. A Bermuda- or lateen-rigged yacht, whether sloop, cutter, ketch or yawl, would not usually be described as having a course.

Course (navigation)

In navigation, an object's course is the direction over the ground along which the object is currently moving.

Course, track, route and heading

The line connecting the object's consecutive positions on the ground is referred to as the ground track. The track the object was intended to follow is called the route. For ships and aircraft, the route is represented by the great circle line that connects the previous waypoint with the next waypoint. The responsibility of a navigator is to make the track coincide as much as possible with the route. The direction of the route is called the route course. "Course" exceptionally, and arguably erroneously, may also refer to the route, such as in a course deviation indicator, in which case it no longer constitutes an angle but rather a line. The direction of the great circle line that runs from the current position to the next waypoint is called the course to steer, or the bearing to that waypoint. The tracking angle is the angle between the course to steer and the course. The heading is the direction to which the "nose" of the object is pointing, its orientation.

Do you have a clear reason why you’re thinking about it or are you parents forcing you into it? Are you doing it because a friend is doing it? Are you thinking about the money (if you are I would be thinking about something else)? Or, are you considering it because of the freedom of location it can provide by working remotely? Do you have a passion for buildings? Do you have a passion for design and creative pursuit? What are the reasons you’re considering architecture as a career? This question alone should solve a lot of concerns for you. The second question I would ask myself is, what do I think architecture would involve? Write down what you think being an architect would mean for you. Visualise it – see yourself doing it. Can you see yourself doing it every single day? Do you even know what an architect does? If not, that’s ok, now you can research about it. Visualisation is so powerful, if you can visualize yourself 10 years in the future, being an architect, do you see yourself enjoying what you’re doing? Skillset: Are you creative? – you don’t necessarily have to be good at drawing, painting, or that – but do you have a creative mindset? Do you think outside the box, do you enjoy problem solving, which stems from creativity? Architecture is a field of design, ultimately it’s a job that requires you to solve problems for a client. Are you creative? Are you a good problem solver? Are you a people person? – if not, that’s ok. In fact, I’m a pretty big introvert. There’s such a wide scope to the profession that there’s a place for everyone. However, architecture has never been a sole person profession. The idea of the “head architect”, managing a team below them, controlling every decision is no longer relevant. Architecture is now a team game. It’s unavoidable that you’ll have to work with people and be able to do it effectively. It’s a service-based industry. You are a servant to the people you work with and to the client. In both situations, with the “head architect”, and the “team architect”, you are dealing with people. I don’t mention having to be good at maths or science because I don’t believe you need them to study architecture. Any mathematical or scientific equations or methods you need to know, which are very minimal, will be learnt once you start your architecture education. The final question to ask yourself is, do you think you’ll be willing to not only put in 110% effort into your education and career, but sustain that effort of the course of your education and career? A job shouldn’t just be something you do 5 days a week to pay the bills. You can get paid to do anything you want, anything you’re passionate about. If you’re choosing architecture because it’s a safe career and pays well, you might want to reconsider why you’re doing it. It’s when you get paid to do what you love that it isn’t regarded to as work. That’s when you can sustain a 110% effort for the next 50 years, because you wake up, fired up to do what you’re getting paid to do. That’s much more rewarding than doing something to pay the bills, go home, wake up, and start again. That’d be my advice and the final question – are you willing to sustain a 110% effort for the next 50 years to do architecture? And I’m not going to claim that I’m like that. I definitely couldn’t answer this question with a yes before I started architecture. But over time, you can find that passion. You can build it up by actually doing it and finding what you like about it – running with the things you love and ignoring doing the things you don’t love. I always think it’s best to focus on your strengths, rather than your weaknesses. If you’re not good at maths and you hate it, but you’re good at art and you love it. Drop maths as a subject and double down on art. Don’t do what your teachers push you to do and let your passion for art drop off so that you can practice your maths and balance it out. Double down on what you love doing and you’ll become the best at it, you’ll find a way to make money doing it, and you’ll attract success.

All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Do you have a clear reason why you’re thinking about it or are you parents forcing you into it? Are you doing it because a friend is doing it? Are you thinking about the money (if you are I would be thinking about something else)? Or, are you considering it because of the freedom of location it can provide by working remotely? Do you have a passion for buildings? Do you have a passion for design and creative pursuit? What are the reasons you’re considering architecture as a career? This question alone should solve a lot of concerns for you. The second question I would ask myself is, what do I think architecture would involve? Write down what you think being an architect would mean for you. Visualise it – see yourself doing it. Can you see yourself doing it every single day? Do you even know what an architect does? If not, that’s ok, now you can research about it. Visualisation is so powerful, if you can visualize yourself 10 years in the future, being an architect, do you see yourself enjoying what you’re doing? Skillset: Are you creative? – you don’t necessarily have to be good at drawing, painting, or that – but do you have a creative mindset? Do you think outside the box, do you enjoy problem solving, which stems from creativity? Architecture is a field of design, ultimately it’s a job that requires you to solve problems for a client. Are you creative? Are you a good problem solver? Are you a people person? – if not, that’s ok. In fact, I’m a pretty big introvert. There’s such a wide scope to the profession that there’s a place for everyone. However, architecture has never been a sole person profession. The idea of the “head architect”, managing a team below them, controlling every decision is no longer relevant. Architecture is now a team game. It’s unavoidable that you’ll have to work with people and be able to do it effectively. It’s a service-based industry. You are a servant to the people you work with and to the client. In both situations, with the “head architect”, and the “team architect”, you are dealing with people. I don’t mention having to be good at maths or science because I don’t believe you need them to study architecture. Any mathematical or scientific equations or methods you need to know, which are very minimal, will be learnt once you start your architecture education. The final question to ask yourself is, do you think you’ll be willing to not only put in 110% effort into your education and career, but sustain that effort of the course of your education and career? A job shouldn’t just be something you do 5 days a week to pay the bills. You can get paid to do anything you want, anything you’re passionate about. If you’re choosing architecture because it’s a safe career and pays well, you might want to reconsider why you’re doing it. It’s when you get paid to do what you love that it isn’t regarded to as work. That’s when you can sustain a 110% effort for the next 50 years, because you wake up, fired up to do what you’re getting paid to do. That’s much more rewarding than doing something to pay the bills, go home, wake up, and start again. That’d be my advice and the final question – are you willing to sustain a 110% effort for the next 50 years to do architecture? And I’m not going to claim that I’m like that. I definitely couldn’t answer this question with a yes before I started architecture. But over time, you can find that passion. You can build it up by actually doing it and finding what you like about it – running with the things you love and ignoring doing the things you don’t love. I always think it’s best to focus on your strengths, rather than your weaknesses. If you’re not good at maths and you hate it, but you’re good at art and you love it. Drop maths as a subject and double down on art. Don’t do what your teachers push you to do and let your passion for art drop off so that you can practice your maths and balance it out. Double down on what you love doing and you’ll become the best at it, you’ll find a way to make money doing it, and you’ll attract success.

All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Course (architecture)

A course is a continuous horizontal layer of similarly-sized building material one unit high, usually in a wall. The term is almost always used in conjunction with unit masonry such as brick, cut stone, or concrete masonry units ("concrete block").

Styles

Stretcher – The typical course style, masonry units are laid with their head (smallest surface) viewed from a side cross-section and the long, narrow sides forming the bulk of the visible course.

Header – Heads form the visible course and the long, narrow dimension viewed from a side cross-section. This is often used to interlock a double wall (two adjacent wythes).
Rowlock – The long narrow sides are top and bottom; the heads visible. Single course. Above lintels. Between string courses. Occasionally the topmost course.
Soldier – Used mainly for decorative purposes as its upright nature does not lend itself to the compressive strength of a masonry unit and tends towards inward or outward lean (where mortar is used) or stress in successive courses. The long, thin sides are visible; the heads are top and bottom.
Sailor (rare) – Decorative, upright, weak and heat-permeable: The long thin sides are viewed from a side-cross section; the heads are top and bottom.
Shiner (rare) – Decorative, weak and heat-permeable. Long thin sides are top and bottom; the heads are viewed from a side cross-section.
