George Frideric (or Frederick) Handel (/ˈhændəl/; born Georg Friedrich Händel,German pronunciation: [ˈhɛndəl]; 23 February 1685 (O.S.) [(N.S.) 5 March] – 14 April 1759) was a German, later British Baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Born in a family indifferent to music, Handel received critical training in Halle, Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712; he became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the great composers of the Italian Baroque and the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition.
Within fifteen years, Handel had started three commercial opera companies to supply the English nobility with Italian opera. Musicologist Winton Dean writes that his operas show that "Handel was not only a great composer; he was a dramatic genius of the first order." As Alexander's Feast (1736) was well received, Handel made a transition to English choral works. After his success with Messiah (1742) he never performed an Italian opera again. Almost blind, and having lived in England for nearly fifty years, he died in 1759, a respected and rich man. His funeral was given full state honours, and he was buried in Westminster Abbey in London.
This list of concerti grossi contains work in the concerto grosso genre.
Concerto Grosso No. 1 for string orchestra with piano obbligato is a 1925 concerto grosso composed by Ernest Bloch.
The work was Bloch's first published concerto grosso of two. According to Alexander J. Morin, the work was created in response to complaints by Bloch's students at the Cleveland Institute of Music about "the inadequacies of tonality in shaping the music for the next century."
Music critic Olin Downes wrote, "The Bloch concerto was on the whole the best written and the most effective of the new works, even though it lacks some of the power and color" of other works. A third concerto grosso evolved into his work Sinfonia Breve.
The Concerto Grosso No. 1 was the first of six concerti grossi by Soviet composer Alfred Schnittke, written in 1977 at the age of 44. Scored for two violins, harpsichord, prepared piano and 21 strings, it was premiered on March 21 that year by Gidon Kremer and Tatiana Grindenko in the violins, Yuri Smirnov in the keyboards and the Leningrad Chamber Orchestra conducted by Eri Klas. It is one of the most representative works of the polystylism of Schnittke, who defined it as a play of three spheres, the Baroque, the Modern and the banal, fusing its techniques and aesthetics into one cohesive structure. It lasts for c. 28 minutes, and consists of six movements:
In 1988 Schnittke arranged the work for flute and oboe instead of the soloist violins.
Grosso is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Turin in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 25 kilometres (16 mi) northwest of Turin. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,002 and an area of 4.3 square kilometres (1.7 sq mi).
Grosso borders the following municipalities: Corio, Mathi, Nole, and Villanova Canavese.
Grosso or Del Grosso is an Italian surname:
Groschen (Latin: Grossus, German: Groschen , Italian: grosso or grossone, Czech: groš, Lithuanian: grašis, Estonian: kross, Polish: grosz, Albanian: grosh, Hungarian: garas, Russian, Ukrainian, Macedonian and Bulgarian: грош (groš), Romanian: groș) was the (sometimes colloquial) name for a coin used in various German-speaking states as well as some non-German-speaking countries of Central Europe (Bohemia, Poland), the Danubian Principalities. The name, like that of the English groat, derives from the Italian denaro grosso, or large penny, via the Czech form groš. The Qirsh (also Gersh, Grush, Γρόσι (Grósi) and Kuruş), Arabic, Ethiopian, Hebrew, Greek and Turkish names for currency denominations in and around the territories formerly part of the Ottoman Empire, are derived from the same Italian origin.
Names like Groschen, grossus/grossi, grosso, grossone, grosz, gros, groš, groat, Groten, garas etc. were used in the Middle Ages for all thick silver coins, as opposed to thin silver coins such as deniers or pennies. Historically it was equal to between several and a dozen denarii.

George Frideric Handel - The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba from the oratorio Solomon (1749) Georg Friedrich Händel
Great Composers - George Frideric Handel - Full Documentary George Frideric Handel was born on a cold February day in 1685, deep in the heart of Germany. His father was a prominent and successful barber-surgeon for the local duke and had determined early on that young George would study civil law. But George was drawn to things more artistic, especially more musical. He was intrigued by instruments, the sounds they could make and the feelings they could evoke. His practical father intervened and forbade him from taking part in what he called "musical nonsense." That wasn't about to stop the determined little youngster. By some unknown means, George was able to get a small clavichord and smuggle it to a tiny room at the top of the house. Then, at night, while the rest of the family was a...
