The Central Railway is one of the largest of the 16 zones of Indian Railways. Its headquarters is in Mumbai at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. It includes the first passenger railway line in India, which opened from Mumbai to Thane on 16 April 1853.
The central railway covers a large part of the state of Maharashtra and small part of Southern Madhya Pradesh and North-Eastern Karnataka.
The Central Railway zone formerly included large parts of Madhya Pradesh and part of southern Uttar Pradesh, which made it the largest railway zone in India in terms of area, track mileage and staff. These areas became the new West Central Railway zone in April 2003.
The Central Railway(erstwhile GIPR) General Manager's official residence 'Glen Ogle'-a Grade II B heritage bungalow, is located on Bhausaheb Hire Marg(Mt. Plesant road) adjacent to the Maharashtra Chief minister's official residence 'Varsha' in Malabar hill in Mumbai.
Central Railway was a British company which proposed to build a new intermodal freight railway line, with a generous loading gauge, connecting the Channel Tunnel with the north of England, particularly Liverpool docks, using much of the trackbed of the former north-south Great Central Railway. The company argued that such a line could significantly cut road congestion by carrying lorries on flatbed rail trucks.
The company was formed in the late 1980s, and its proposals were controversial and faced opposition. The plans were rejected by the government in 1996 and again in 2003, largely because of doubts over financing its £8 billion cost, even though it is a private-sector project.
Although the Central Railway scheme did not go ahead, a similar scheme is (October 2013) under discussion as an alternative to the HS2 project.
Route 21 was electrified in 1895 as a streetcar line along Preston and Caroline Streets. In 1938, the line was converted to a rubber tire bus service.
In 1957, the line was extended along Carey Street to the current loop at Cumberland and Carey Streets. The line did not have any routing changes until February 8, 2009, when it was extended north to the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station along Pennsylvania Avenue.

Why such a Rush to Destroy this Railway? The Great Central Railway in Nottingham
The Great Central Railway, closed since the 1960s. Whilst walking todays video it dawned on me...
Why was the government in such a rush to get rid of and bury this railway?
Unlike other lines, Midland, Great Northern that have many closed but accessable lengths still around, the GCR just seemed to get flattened, built on, Decimated immediatly!
In this video i walk a section from Linby in Nottinghamshire via Hucknall and onto Bulwell.
Sadly this route is all chopped up, in some instances entire embankments hava vanished!

We board the Class 107 green DMU service from Ruddington Fields on the 11am service. We look for the usual landmarks of fifty steps bridge, Rushcliffe Halt, East Leake, Barnstone Tunnel and Stanford Viaduct. We turn around at the stop board as the entry to Loughborough. It gives a good view of the trackbed towards Loughborough Central of the renewed bridges and new viaduct yet to be built.
After riding the train, we head up to see the next service crossing the impressive Loughborough viaduct. As a bonus we also call in at Quorn & Woodhouse on the Great Central Railway Leicestershire.
