The California Trail was an emigrant trail of about 2,000 miles (3,200km) across the western half of the North American continent from Missouri River towns to what is now the state of California. After it was established, the first half of the California Trail followed the same corridor of networked river valley trails as the Oregon Trail and the Mormon Trail, namely the valleys of the Platte, North Platte and Sweetwater Rivers to Wyoming. In the present states of Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah the California and Oregon trails split into several different trails or cutoffs.
California is a place name used by three North American states: in the United States by the state of California, and in Mexico by the states of Baja California and Baja California Sur. Collectively, these three areas constitute the region formerly referred to as Las Californias. The name California is shared by many other places in other parts of the world whose names derive from the original. The name "California" was applied to the territory now known as the state of California by one or more Spanish explorers in the 16th century and was probably a reference to a mythical land described in a popular novel of the time: Las Sergas de Esplandián. Several other origins have been suggested for the word "California", including Spanish, Latin, South Asian, and Aboriginal American origins. All of these are disputed.
California originally referred to the entire region composed of the Baja California peninsula now known as Mexican Baja California and Baja California Sur, and upper mainland now known as the U.S. states of California and parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Wyoming. After Mexico's independence from Spain, the upper territory became the Alta California province. In even earlier times, the boundaries of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean coastlines were only partially explored and California was shown on early maps as an island. The Sea of Cortez is also known as the Gulf of California.
The California Trail, 1841: Dead Ends and Gold Fields
Despite one of the shortest routes westward, the California Trail contained nothing but obstacles for its travelers. The desert and mountain tested the resolve of emigrants stricken by the wanderlust of the 1840s. The journey demanded decisive action if the wagons were to cross the deserts and summit the Sierra Nevada before the winter snows. Donner stands as a byword for dawdlers. The land, religion, opportunity, and finally gold drew Americans across deserts and over mountains to the rainbows end, California.

What's Left of the Oregon/California Trail on the Forty Mile Desert in Nevada?
Lets see actual physical evidence of the struggles of California gold rush bound emigrants on the dreaded 40 mile desert, located about 60 miles northeast of Reno, Nevada on the overland trail. Like pioneers on the Oregon Trail which branched off the main route earlier in the journey, emigrants headed to the gold fields of California had hard challenges, but nothing on the entire journey from Missouri out west compared to the terrible crossing of the forty mile desert.

Where was the California Emigrant Trail as it traveled through Reno and Sparks, Nevada?
Lets look at the route that early pioneers and gold rushers used as they crossed through our area - the Truckee Meadows - interesting to anyone that is into Reno, history and the Oregon and California Trails. After coming off of the miserable crossing of the Forty Mile Desert, those that chose the Truckee River Route (including the Donner Party) came right through our area - I'll show you where!

I've had a lifelong interest in historical topics, and spend much time exploring and researching this wonderful area. I started this channel to share some of what I've learned. I produced a full-length documentary film on the history of Harolds Club casino in 2015.
Perhaps you're thinking of moving to Reno and are looking for background on the area, or you're already a resident and this content might help give you a sense of place. I shall endeavor to cater to both groups!
I'm also a craft beer enthusiast, and thought I'd talk about some of the brewery scene here as well. I started homebrewing 31 years ago in 1992, and earned the Certified Cicerone designation in 2015 - this is a sommelier-like program for beer people.

Then we take a visit to the 40 Mile Saloon in midtown Reno for a fine craft beer, and please stay for outtake images and other historic photographs I made on this and other trail routes over the period of 25 years, to the sounds of Reno based rockabilly band Hot Rod Rebellion - Steve (me) guitar, background vocals, Kevin - lead vocals, Andy - upright bass, Tom - drums.

This is the place to learn interesting things about Reno, the state of Nevada, and the west! My name is Steve and I've lived in Reno for 37 years (as an adult!).
Please subscribe, share and come along with me on this journey! Thanks and cheers!

A 14-year-old girl describes a great American adventure, crossing the Plains by wagon on a 2000-mile journey west. (9.25 mins)
In 1848, the Hester family from Indiana embarked on an epic journey west by covered wagon to California. Their 14-year-old daughter Sallie wrote a diary describing the experience, and this module tells her story. It follows the Hesters across the Plains and over the treacherous Sierra Nevadas - past the place where the Donner Party met their grisly end just three years earlier.

Mountain lion cub plays at the Oakland Zoo.
The creator of the video posted this on social media. "Rescued mountain lion cub Briar is enjoying his new digs at California Trail! He now has platforms that are over 8 feet tall and is navigating them expertly. He currently has access to two large stalls that he frequently gets the zoomies running between. He can hear all our guests and is getting used to the normal sounds of our busy zoo."
